Ballad Of The Hatfields And McCoys

©2013 Robert Randall Burke

In the hills they tell the story
To all the girls and boys
Of the war on the Tug River
And the Hatfields and McCoys.

Devil Anse, he was a Hatfield
Hardened by the Civil War
Ran'l McCoy, was even harder
And on revenge he swore.

Down along the borderline
I kill yours an' you kill mine
The killin' lasted more than thirty years
Now Johnse's gone and old Jim Vance
And they'll be hangin' Devil Anse
The river overflows with widow's tears.

Well they took them three young Hatfields
Tied 'em to a Pawpaw tree
And when the smoke had settled
The McCoys had set 'em free.

Down along the borderline
I kill yours an' you kill mine
The killin' lasted more than thirty years
Now Johnse's gone and old Jim Vance
And they'll be hangin' Devil Anse
The river overflows with widow's tears.

In the hills they tell the story
To all the girls and boys
Of the war on the Tug River
And the Hatfields and McCoys.

Down along the borderline
I kill yours an' you kill mine
The killin' lasted more than thirty years
Now Johnse's gone and old Jim Vance
And they'll be hangin' Devil Anse
The river overflows with widow's tears
That river overflows with widow's tears.

Thanks, floyd. You seem to hold a minority opinion.

Hey Bob

What a great start to my Saturday morning! This is truly excellent. As Floyd says, "Outstanding! Great lyric!!! and tracks, and mix, and vocal". The only thing I can add to that is that the arrangement is also exceptional. To my ears, this song has "success" written all over it.

You'd better add me to the same minority as Floyd!

All the best,
Noel

Very sweet... I love these story songs. I assume you recently watched the mini-series, as I did, and you have captured it very nicely. I particularly like the chorus.

Thanks for the kind words, Noel. I love this program!

We just watched the Kevin Costner one - I think that was a miniseries. I got my middle name from Randall McCoy - a distant ancestor. Never done kilt any Hatfields though.

Survey says - classic family feud. Excellent job on the song, the sound, and vocals.

Outstanding, Bob.

I always like your songs, but this has to be one of the best things you've done. Couldn't find fault with anything! Very, very professional mix.

Hi guys

I am new to the forum great to hear so many excellent works will need some advice on posting material etc on here

I just got band in a box 2013 literally this week just in the process of cracking out a tune on it now mixing the vocals this weekend. When I am ready to post which forum do you use for the song etc

Also can anyone tell me how you add profile pictures on here etc always says my pics are too big

Kind Regards

Darren

Hi Darren and welcome to the forums.

This is the section for songs done with PG products like Band in a Box (BiaB). Start a new thread for each song and try to provide some information as to how it was recorded.

Any queries about how to use the program should go in either the BiaB forum or the RealBand (RB) forum. General queries or comments go in the Off-topic section.

The profile pictures can be a problem - use an editing program to keep reducing the size until it gets accepted.

Looking forward to hearing your first song.

ROG.

Well written, sung and produced song. I especially appreciate the attention to the harmony sections and the overall song mix. The song has a very polished sound. I hope you will do more story telling songs as you have a great voice for this type of song.

Nice. "The river overflows with widow's tears" as Sundance pointed out is a great line. Just pops right out at you and sticks.

Well done good production

Excellent song and production Bob!

I have a few questions.
Was this the song that won you last year's 2013 BIAB Award?

About the instruments.
You listed a bunch of your settings and instruments.

Can you tell us what you added to the BIAB sounds?
Vocals?
Lead guitar?
?
?
Did you do this with RealBand or something else?

Hi BIABguy,

Thanks for the kind remarks.

“Was this the song that won you last year's 2013 BIAB Award?”

I have no idea, actually. There are other criteria PG uses, and I don't know if this was a factor.

That song was completely done with the BIAB instruments listed. All I added were vocals, using a Studio Projects T3 tube mic into a Focusrite Saffire. The song was mixed in Sonar. I'm sure I could have mixed it in RB, it's just that I'm more familiar with Sonar.

Floyd, I agree, that song could easily become a standard. Great harmony, and overall vibe.
Takes me back to Arlo days. Even Arlo would be pleased!
Great job, Bob!
