Devil Anse, he was a Hatfield
Hardened by the Civil War
Ran'l McCoy, was even harder
And on revenge he swore.

The killin' lasted more than thirty years
Now Johnse's gone and old Jim Vance
And they'll be hangin' Devil Anse
The river overflows with widow's tears.
Well they took them three young Hatfields
Tied 'em to a Pawpaw tree
And when the smoke had settled
The McCoys had set 'em free.
