Janice gets a bit sassy on this one!

DON'T SELL IT, DON'T GIVE AWAY

We discovered the roots of this tune at PublicDomain4U listed under “folk blues.” Oscar Woods first recorded the tune and it is noted primarily for the fact that he played a National steel guitar in the lap Hawaiian style. This may be the beginning of many country and blues styles on this instrument. The most fascinating thing about him is that he, an African-American, backed up the Governor of Louisiana on several recordings in 1930! Now that would have been a session to have been at. According to some reports he lived on until the 1950’s while others say that he disappeared in 1938. I played around with the lyrics to make them a bit less risqué and to make them from the female perspective. We then set it to a Texas or Western Swing rhythm and added a minor chord.

Bass Kickoff (first bar): spliced from two bass RealTracks
Bass: RealTrack 762 Jazz - walking and with the simple option.
Guitar: RealTrack 559 Jazz Rhythm - 4 to the bar.
Mandolin: RealTrack 616 Country - bouncy rhythm
Piano: RealTrack 450 Jazz - “A” only
Piano: RealTrack 1865 Western Swing solo
Fiddle: RealTrack 1296 Western Swing Rhythm
Fiddle: RealTrack 1871 Western Swing Solo

The piano solo/rhythm and the fiddle solo/rhythm final two tracks were created in GarageBand from multiple renderings of all four tracks.

Vocal: USB Blu mic

Mixing and effects: GarageBand.

Thanks for listening!

Bud -

Don't even know where to begin....

INCREDIBLE. So amazingly authentic. And yet, so contemporary... amazing... amazing.

(is it ok that I am in love with your wife (her voice, of course)?????) -- your fault....

wow. wow....

Hi Bud and Janice,

After listening to this song, I can only think in superlatives and hyperbole! You know, things like: wow, brilliant mix, amazing production clarity, Janice's voice is incredible, unbelievably good, et cetera. That's how good this music is I loved the instrumental fade-out ending. That's arranging genius in my books. You two sure know how to make good music into world class music.

Going back for listen #2, now!

Great song and the style is wonderful!
Your "trick" with getting the "solos" is what I've started doing in my Cakewalk GTP2.Load 'em all in and take the best bits that fit together.
Cheers

Love this. Great production, and performance. Alan Lomax is smiling down from heaven right now, knowing that the tradition is still alive.

Great photography on your site as well.

Cool the way you two use old PD songs to write new ones.

Sounds great.

Big +1 here!

You guys do a great job bringing these old tunes back to life so to speak. As for many of us have just gone away for good, that is until now.

Regarding the original lyric, unless I am "not" looking at the "real" original lyric, or am missing something I don't see where it is that risque' or maybe it's just me.

Great Job guys!

Thank all of you very much taking time to post the comments. We really do strive to breath some contemporary life into these old traditional songs. Of course our notion of contemporary is often close to the same age as the songs! It is genuinely gratifying that there are folks who appreciate our efforts. Since we haven't performed in years and live in the music hinterlands (at least for our genres) it has been very exciting for us to find this wonderful community. Without BIAB and the support of you folks Janice would likely never have started back singing after our decade long layoff. And she and I would have never discovered that she can sing genres other than bluegrass. For both of us stepping out of our bluegrass world in blues and even some reggae has been a bit like stepping off a cliff.

Thanks again.
