Summers

©2013 Robert Randall Burke

She sits at the window
And watches the rain
Gently fall below
Waiting for someone
Who won't come again
To share the fireglow.

Gone are the summers
Of sunlight and lovers
When laughter would ring in the air
Now she calls out in darkness
Knowing that no one is there.

Haunted by all of the unspoken words
The things that might have been
The tears on the window
That mirror her own
Sorrow deep within.

Gone are the summers
Of sunlight and lovers
When laughter would ring in the air
Now she calls out in darkness
Knowing that no one is there.

Bob, what a fantastic song! It grabbed me right from the start. Your vocal is outstanding and your lyrics well all I can say is WOW! Your backing tracks set the mood for this beautifully sad song perfectly.

This is a keeper.

Bob,

OMG.

Forget the fact that your production is PERFECT. INCREDIBLE.

Forget the fact that your vocal performance is PERFECT. INCREDIBLE. OMG.

OMG...

BOB!

This song is BEAUTIFUL. Period. BEAUTIFUL. <<< do you SEE the period???

It is like hearing Tony Arata singing "The Dance" at the Bluebird before Garth said "I gotta do that!!!"

I bow to you, man.

OMG.

Bob,

This is first class. Very strong and pretty melody. Although the story is sad, it brings out empathy in the listener as other songs like Eleanor Rigby does.

Sad but not maudlin. Often that's too thin of a line for song writers. Thanks for sharing.

I couldn't express it in better words.

Thanks guys. I know it's sad, but i don't think about them much. I just write them and move on. They are just sketches.

Hi Bob,

This is magnificent. What stood out to me most was the way you've used the minor key in this. It was excellent. In fact, everything about this is excellent - top to tail. My favourite lines were ...
    Gone are the summers
    Of sunlight and lovers

These lines really sit well in the mouth to sing. Brilliant stuff. It's got a good amount of what Pat Patterson calls "concealed alliteration". (Just like Gary Burr's refrain, "A Thousand Wild Horses, thunderin' behind me, hell bent on running me down" - found at this link)

All the best,
Noel

Darren,

Thanks for listening. I used a Studio Projects C-1 into a Focusrite Saffire interface.

Bob -

I've never "hit a song twice" (okay, maybe one of Bud's)... but I had to for this one...

The production, mix and vocal are as good as they come.

But I wanted to mention the lines in the song that I thought were "really well written"..

Here they are:

She sits at the window
And watches the rain
Gently fall below
Waiting for someone
Who won't come again
To share the fireglow.

Gone are the summers
Of sunlight and lovers
When laughter would ring in the air
Now she calls out in darkness
Knowing that no one is there.

Haunted by all of the unspoken words
The things that might have been
The tears on the window
That mirror her own
Sorrow deep within.

Gone are the summers
Of sunlight and lovers
When laughter would ring in the air
Now she calls out in darkness
Knowing that no one is there.

Shucks, Floyd. Now I'm having delusions of adequacy. (the checks' in the mail, BTW).

Just a heads up . . . be sure to watch that "adequacy level" very closely as I am told that once it is reached you can raise your prices.

Danny,

No chance of that happening. I've been inadequate for years and years.
