State Lines

Howdy all,
Last spring I posted a jazzy/country/blues tune (all RT's) that was a vocal experiment for Janice. I have recently remixed and mastered it. I've been involved in mixing at one time or another since the 60's but when floyd suggested I get Ozone it opened up new vistas for us. We've been slowly mastering all our BIAB/Garageband projects and this is the latest. I was a little dubious at first given how much buzz there is to the effect that one shouldn't master one's own material -- but I took that with a grain of salt and forged on. Mastering turns out to be, like mixing, "never finished, just abandoned!" It has been interesting as it gives you (or at least Janice and I) an opportunity to really explore how the completed mix sounds. Small tweaks in mastering often seem to make a huge difference in the sound of the mix.

Although previously posted (my first repeat) I thought that some of you might want to hear how it sounds after the remix and mastering. The below link to the original post has info re the RealTracks used. mix, etc., if interested.

Thanks for listening!

First class song. Lots of feeling in the singing. Loved it...

hey Janice & Bud...

Now that's Country Jazz at it's finest...with just a slight hint of the Blues. Janice's voice really sells this one for us. She pouts it over the top!!! And the music is great, too. What's not to like? Great job, guys!

Janice Took the blues out of bluegrass and put it all in this one. Bud, great job on the editing. This one sounds just terrific. Tom

Digging it.

Speaking of crossing lines, this is just a great mix of country, blues and jazz influences. Thank you for sharing.

This new Master sounds fuller and more defined but I liked the other one too. Good singing and great arranging does that to you.
Happy New Year, Janice and Bud.

Thanks man. Janice so often say how should I sing this (write lyrics/she the melodies) and I just say "the way you feel it." We have an incredible 32 year marriage so she's like a method actor -- sorta sinks into the story and plays the part. Works well with the breakup songs I tend to write smile

Thanks you two. This type of music is waaay out of our wheelhouse but it was really fun to see what we could come up with. It's great that y'all dug it.

Tommy, that is really cool you said that. There is so much blues in bluegrass. Takes a while to "get it" but it's there. Glad it worked well for you. Thanks!

Janice and Bud - Doing what they do best!

Bud doing all the instruments as well as they can be done.
Janice showin' 'em all how it's really done!

And... a well-written blues number!

Thanks floyd! We worked hard on this one and, hey, I appreciate you advice on how to mix up the second lines of each verse. And thanks again for encouraging us to get Ozone.

Very pro sounding track with Janice's warm earthy vocal and your attention to detail shows even more with the Ozone shine.

Sounds great to me.

Thanks for noting that! That bent note singing comes from her years of singing bluegrass.
