Daffodil Show - Any comments welcome. Cheers.

At our small country school Blackie the headmaster decided to have a daffodil show. In the winter all the kids were given a daffodil bulb to nurture and grow which would be included in a daffodil show at the beginning of spring. I dont remember what happened to mine but it never got planted so never grew. When showtime came around and I didn't want to be left out. There were a few wild daffodils around but I wanted to put my best foot forward so looked high and low for a suitable bloom. The best I could find was in a back garden. There were heaps so surely no one would notice one less. No way. On the morning of the show so it would be nice and fresh I cut through the Blackie's garden on the way to school and picked out this really fine looking bloom. The show went well. Judged by Blackie who'd been at the home brew and Miss Jackson the night before and was in a really good mood. To my immense pride my bloom was chosen for the main prize which I proudly accepted with Blackies congratulations and acollades from my fellows and teachers.
Later Blackie burst into our one room class waving his cane and yelling about me being a pirate and being born to hang. Someone had stolen his prize bloom. I got out pretty quick, shot down the track, hid in the gully and the scrub down the back. He got me for it next day though. Ah well theres always a price to pay.

In our little country school for nature study
we each grew a daffo-dil to put on show
My bulb was sadly thrown at my buddy
who made me slip be-cause the path was muddy
And it wasnt planted so it couldn't grow

Had to find a flower to dis-play.
Searching field and farm in desper-ation
Found a cultivated patch of them one day.
Picked a beauty then went on my way
Thank the Lord a-bove for such good fortune

We love the fragrant petals that bloom in the spring
school flower shows all that kind of thing
We're proud of our skills and quick on our feet
we're full of the devil and life is so sweet

I guess you already know who won the day,
the Heads congratulations and prize ribbons
I basked in the glory of a sudden rise to fame
a winner free at last from sin and shame
My status in that school had swiftly risen

We love the fragrant petals that bloom in the spring
school flower shows all that kind of thing
We're proud of our skills and quick on our feet
we're full of the devil and life is so sweet

Blackie burst in later to our class room
been checking his prize patch of daffo-dils
In-sanely slashing with his cane and bellowing my name
he didn't get me I was gone too soon
Out the back and down the track into the hills

Caught up with me next day I'm sore and sad to say
Ah the price we have to pay for our best moments.

We love the fragrant petals that bloom in the spring
school flower shows all that kind of thing
We're proud of our skills and quick on our feet
we're full of the devil and life is so sweet

We love the fragrant petals that bloom in the spring
school flower shows all that kind of thing
We're proud of our skills and quick on our feet
we're full of the devil and life is oh so sweeeeeet

You have a very "matter of fact" way of writing. Pretty cool.

When we first moved in this house some 30 years ago, there came a row of daffodils each spring across the center of the back yard. No one, not even the older neighbors could remember who planted them or why. We dug up a bunch of them and moved them to other more suitable flower beds where they continue to bloom to this day. The rest, well, after a few years of constant mowing, they decided to give up the attempt.

They, along with crocuses are the indicators that spring is just a few short weeks away and for the most part, winter is coming to a close.

Thanks Herb for that very satisfying comment.
Our first daffodils bloomed about a week ago and the beautiful clear winter days are heralding spring. Planted a lot of bulbs out in the paddock but the rabbits dug half of them up. Cheers.

Hi Rich,

We weren't expecting that music for the lyric, which we read before listened. But it works! Great back story. And yep, there's always a price to pay!

We really enjoyed this, great story telling and a real nice production. Best to ya ...

Hi there Richard,

Those lyrics are quite a story! We find this song very original and you definitely got a very distinct sound here.
You're also pretty good with the TC Helicon.

Hi Richard,

Very creative! I really like the abaab rhyme scheme you've used in the verses. It's an excellent choice of rhyme pattern if you want to keep the words moving until the last line of a verse. To my ears, the rhyme closures along the journey act as the equivalent of commas and it's not until the final 'b' rhyme that everything sounds complete.

Robert Frost (a highly recognised American poet) used the same rhyme scheme in "The Road Not Taken". Here's a LINK to his poem if you are interested in having a read.

I enjoyed the story!

All the best,
Noel

There has not been one comment here that we don't agree with --- and we read them all.

Absolutely nothing left to add other than to express our personal enjoyment of several listens to a wonderful tune! You are remarkably consistent.

Many thanks Jan and Bud. Haven't written anything since February for FAWM. This was the last of them and I'm looking forward to some new writes. Cheers.
