In the fall of 2006 I relocated and in the spring of 2007 I fell madly in love. We shopped for rings and went house hunting but it was only to be a spring romance. It was also the first song I wrote after living through Hurricane Katrina two years earlier. Looking back I suppose I had a lot on my mind.

[Link no longer valid]

Love Again (July 2007)

I, I no longer care, I no longer hope, it’s harder now to breathe, ‘cause I no longer dream
I’m tired of the wind blowing through my hair, I’m tired of the sands of time rushing through my hands
I’m tired of the sun, I’m tired of the rain, I’m tired of the heartache, I’m tired of the pain
I’m weary of your face, of our faded dream, I’m tired of your memory I’m tired of your name

Don’t ask me if I care, don’t ask me anything, ‘cause I don’t really know if I will ever love again

You, you promised me your love, you opened up your home, now I can’t believe I’m sitting here alone
With just your memory, it seems like yesterday, the smile in your eyes that took my breath away
The wind that tossed your hair, the sunlight on your face, and what I wouldn’t give to go back to that place
Where not so long ago, you turned to me to hold you in my arms to keep you company

And I may never feel again, and I may never dream again, and I can’t tell you why I’m tired of it all

So don’t, don’t ask me if I care, don’t ask me anything, ‘cause I don’t really know if I will ever love again

All instruments are real tracks. Bass, Drums, piano, synth pad, cello, 3 strumming acoustic guitars, and a bit of Dreamy guitar.

I really like this song. Excellent writing and production. I think we have all been there in our lives at one time or the other and you have done a masterful job or putting it to words and music.

Something good came out of such a horror as the hurricane .... this song
I thought Badfinger as soon as it started and then the song took a life of its own.
beautiful use of cello and perfect vocals for such a sad song. Nice use of the "false ending"
beautiful

We've all been there

Lawrence – You had me right from the start with that cello and piano intro and heartfelt vocal performance. Another wonderful production.

Lawrence,

Nice song. Your vocals are always incredibly nice. So distinctive. A voice that ought to be heard. It should be selling records.

Excellent production and mix. (What is the piano RT?)

Beautiful.

Lawrence, I have listened to this several times and will be back for more. Love it! Your vocal is outstanding. Just the right rasp and the right cry. Gorgeous write. Killer arrangement. And an ending to die for. Love the reverb tail on the stop. As good as anything you've posted here. Bravo! Tom

Lawrence,
This song is truly beautiful! The build up of the arrangement is very well chosen. The same goes for the vocal, we especially like the transition from very expressive to modest at certain moments in the song.
Which Real Track is the piano?

Beautiful!! I always loved this kind of ballad. This should be in a movie soundtrack. Beautiful vocal, and an arrangement that squeezes out all of the beauty of the song masterfully! Amazing work!! Take care. Greg

Hi Laurence. Great write and beautifully presented. Really like the strong vocal dynamics and the insistence of the piano. Nice moody photo. Cheers.

Really nice application of music dynamics to match your lyrics. Nice from start to finish.

Charlie, Thank you for taking time to listen and comment. I'm glad you liked it.

Alyn, yes that Hurricane was a terrible horror that changed everyone's lives. Thank you.

John, Thank you for the kind words.

Bob, Very happy you enjoyed it.

JosieC, I wasn't sure how the cello would work but after playing around with it for some time I'm happy with the results. Thank you.

Guenter, thank you, I'm glad you liked it.

Floyd, the piano is 891. Ahh, the songwriters lottery to sell records. Thanks for listening.

Alen & Di, The three minutes of delight was my pleasure. Thank you both.

Tom, You are very kind with your words. The raspy vocal was in part due to me recording after being awake for over 24 hours. Thank you so much.

Eric, I'm glad you stopped in for a listen and for the kind words.

Rob and Anne-Marie, Thank both for the encouraging comments. Rob the piano is 891.

Greg, I am grateful for your generous words and very glad you liked the song.

RichMac, Yes, the piano is the heartbeat of this song. One of the very few songs I have written on the piano as I cannot really play the piano. When I found the 891 piano in BIAB, I knew it was time to re-record the song. Thank you.

Patrick, I was very happy when I settled on this arrangement. Thank for listening and commenting.

Hi Lawrence,

This song is wonderful.

As always, your singing, your arranging, your production are outstanding. I also loved the descending bass line. It's a perfect musical fit for wringing every last ounce of emotion from the lyrics. Great prosody.

I'm heading back to listen yet again!

All the best,
Noel

Hi, Lawrence !

I sure hope you have got over
this passage of your life !
It seems a bittersweet one
if any ! In any case,as you
know, they say that the best
love songs are written with
a broken heart ! May this be
why your song is so good ?
Take care !

Cheers
Dani

Noel, Thank you very much for the kind words.

Dani, thank you for your concern. I am over it all for sure now. I call it beautiful pain. It makes you know that you are alive! And I am happy to have a song out of it.

Stunningly beautiful -- and I don't use those words lightly. So often songs with beautiful lyrics like these are sung solely in a "pretty" manner. But your voice has exactly the right balance of grit and emotion to take it to another place...a good place. Heck, I guess I've just tried to define soul. Wonderful package -- all the components work so well.
Posted By: gruverider Re: Love Again - 07/29/14 04:44 AM
Bud & Janice, thank for the very kind words. A song like this comes from the soul and I pleased to hear that the soul comes through.
Posted By: plish Re: Love Again - 07/29/14 07:03 AM
Really beautiful tune - a great example of a song conveying more than the sum of its parts.

I am curious as to the ending. Did you give any thought to ending on an unresolved chord since you're asking a question?

Thanks for sharing your soul so beautifully.

Peace~

Nicely done. Classic, simple, song structure, well written lyrics, and a simple musical backing. What's not to like about this?

Loved the way you chose to end this.

Thumbs up all the way.
Posted By: gruverider Re: Love Again - 08/03/14 06:53 PM
Guitarhacker, thank you, and yes to the classic structure. It wasn't until years after I wrote this song that I learned that the chord progression is one of the most used progressions in modern pop music.

I have heard many of my songwriter friends complain that they try not to write with this or that musical cliché but my attitude is to get out of my own way so to speak and simply allow myself to write.

And I am happy that I just went for it when I wrote this song and didn't second guess my choices.

glad you liked it

Lawrence, I missed this song when you originally posted it, but I recently heard it in the queue on SoundCloud after somebody else's song, and I was just dumbfounded by it! I had to search for it in order to post a comment. What Bud and Janice said above is right on.. STUNNINGLY beautiful, and yet gritty, kicked in the @$$ by life REAL.

Not very many people could pull this off. There are probably at least 150 ways to screw this song up... but you not only made it work, this is the song writing equivalent of a major league home run!

Every song writer wants to believe they're writing songs that speak to people... well, Lawrence... you ARE! Your songs are consistently well-written, impactful, highly marketable, unique, well sung, memorable and awesome. There are some excellent song writers on this forum, and you are right there among the best.

Keep 'em coming, my friend!

That is very kind of you to say Pat. I'm happy to hear that my songs strike a chord with you. This song is very special to me for a number of reasons. One of which is that it is the first song I wrote after Hurricane Katrina. It had been exactly two years to the month after the storm when I wrote it. I had moved to a new home, a new city, a new state, a new job; made new friends and thought I had found the love of my life. I was wrong.

But the experience started me writing again and I've written dozens of songs since. Life takes you where it takes you and it does so without warning.

So beautiful! But so close to depression to...
Aren't we lucky we can transform some of this heartache into songs?

Lovely, and the emotion in your voice confirms that you meant every word. There is no greater justice for anyone with a broken heart than to the one who can write a song.

Patt, Fred and Carolyne,

I don't make a habit of replying more than once to a specific post, but this is an exception.
'Love again' and 'Seventh Skin' are my two favorite songs on the forum so far.
They are a fine demonstration of Lawrence's talent and craftsmanship.

My late brother who lived and worked in Nashville for many years when encouraging me to continue to write songs, always told me I only had to get it right ONCE. But that time would almost always come when it was least expected and likely be a song least expected to resonate with everyone - as such a song would certainly have to do.

I believe you have written a ONE! I made my first post before I had listened enough times to allow the song to really sink in but I now realize this is beautiful piece of craftsmanship.

This is a song that I feel deep inside and it hurts, it aches ... but all in a good way. You've shared an experience everyone can relate with on a gut level. Now THAT'S songwriting!

The production matches the song. Very powerful.

There are so many amazing song writers on the forum that its hard for me to say that my top 2 songs are from the same person... BUT...

I can surely say that LOVE AGAIN and SEVENTH SKIN are two of my favorites from Lawrence... and that's saying something, because I like EVERYTHING this guy writes!

Interesting premise, thinking of my favorite song from each person on the forum.. .hmmm...
