Mountains of Mourne

Oh, Mary, this London's a wonderful sight
With people here working by day and by night
They don't sow potatoes nor barley nor wheat
But there's gangs of them diggin' for gold in the street
At least when I asked them, that's what I was told
So I just took a hand at this diggin' for gold
But for all that I've found there, I might as well be
In the place where the dark Mourne sweeps down to the sea

I believe that when writin' a wish you expressed
As to how the fine ladies of London were dressed
But if you'll believe me, when asked to a ball
They don't wear no tops to their dresses at all
Oh, I've seen them myself and you could not in truth
Tell if they were bound for a ball or a bath
Don't be startin' them fashions now, Mary McRee,
In the place where the dark Mourne sweeps down to the sea

There's beautiful girls here, oh, never you mind
Beautiful shapes Nature never designed
Lovely complexions of roses and cream
But let me remark with regard to the same
That if at those roses you venture to sit
The colors might all come away on your lip
So I'll wait for the wild rose that's waitin' for me
In the place where the dark Mourne sweeps down to the sea

Very nice. Great video. Another cover showed up on the YouTube list from Don Mclean so I could make a comparison with an artist I am familiar with. Your version is equally impressive. Can't ask for more.

A lovely old song and beautifully done. Most appropriate video. A real good listen. Cheers.

Rob, you have such an amazing voice! How I wish I could make notes flow out of my vocal chords the way you can! So smooth and effortless sounding!

And here we have an example of your versatility! A couple of tunes ago it was an excellent 80's style pop song, while this time it's an Irish traditional! You just don't have any boundaries do you?? wink

The old photos in the video did a good job of visually creating a space in time for the song to reside. Without the video, the impact of the song wouldn't have been quite the same for me. Beautiful scenery to go with the beautiful song.

I guess that was Anne-Marie singing harmonies... as usual a very nice job! But maybe a little bit understated. We always want to hear as much of her contribution as possible.

Great job, my friends! I always enjoy everything you post, and this was no exception!

Really nicely done!! Pretty song, a superb vocal delivery, and the instrumentation could not have worked better. This is a bit different for you guys-very traditional folk sound. Some really interesting lyrics. You nailed it!! Take care. Greg

Hey Guys,

We just listened and watched...mesmerizing!
The production is outstanding and particularly
the vocals and the vid images. There is a wealth
of great material out in the public domain just
awaiting a new vibrant interpretation like this.
Thanks for introducing us to this one.

Hi Pat,

Thanks for your nice words!
We like to try all kinds of styles.
Yes, the harmonies are Anne-Marie's. We thought the song just needed some modest harmonies. Other songs ask for more.

Beautiful!

Your voices are blended so nicely on this. The instrumentation is terrific - and very well mixed. (Love the crisp piano)

Rob, your vocal on this is a real stand out!

Very well done.

Hi Greg,

Thank you!
Yes we are usually not in the habit of covering songs.
However, since this was a "public domain song" we thought we'd give it a try (Rob has been a fan of DonMclean's version for ages).

Hi J&B,

Thank you!
We already thought you guys might like this, since you have posted public domain covers before.
Yes, public domain can be a wealth of material.

Hi Anne-Marie and Rob,

Absolutely stunning work!

Rob's singing = perfect; Anne-Marie's harmonies = perfect; arrangement = perfect; production = prefect; video presentation = perfect.

I really enjoyed listening to this.

All the best,

Rob and Anne Marie. Wow! That vocal is just something else. And the video had me totally mesmerized. Loved it!
Posted By: Guitarhacker Re: Mountains of Mourne - 01/20/15 10:32 AM
Wow.... very nice.

I liked the feel to this song....and the story was excellent.

Recording, tracks, production was top quality all the way.

This song took me on a ride....which is what a song should do. It pulled me into the lyrics and the story and put me in the middle of the action..... great job on this.

My only nit.... if you could call it that... was the ending....The ending IMHO, really needs a 4 bar musical outtro. Tag it musically.... and then slow the final measure. But, that, my friends, is how I would have ended it. The way you did end it works fine....

Another great job.... I didn't watch the video initially.... I came back here and browsed the comments as it was playing.... then about halfway through, I popped over to the video and realized I needed to watch this from the start, so I restarted the video.....

As usual... great track, excellent vocals. As others mentioned, the piano was particularly nice, especially how it lightly overlapped the vocals, but didn't intrude.
Posted By: RnAM Re: Mountains of Mourne - 01/20/15 08:27 PM
Receder, Floyd, Tommy, Noel, Josie, David and Herb...
thanks you for all your kind words.

Floyd: yes.. although a midi, this is one of our favourite piano's

Herb: yes, the end is somewhat abrupt. Next time we'll add some extra bars.
