This week song:

All I want

A love song I wrote for Anne-Marie's birthday.
Although her birthday was last year, I finally came up with the song this year grin
(Wiser Woman, one of our previous songs, was also written for her birthday, two years ago).
Anyway, now it's her turn to write me one because my birthday will be next week whistle

The song features the very nice Joni Mitchell style. I immediately liked the piano playing and started to experiment with some chords.
For MIDI tracks we usually use the Forte DXI but this time I needed a piano that would sound a little bit sharper, so I decided to use the Musyng Kite light soundfont along with the BassMidi SF2 soundfont loader. Finally I rendered the MIDI tracks with the program SynthFont.

Further specifics:
Style is P_JONI.STY (Joni Mitchel piano)
MIDI Instruments: Acoustic Piano (1), Acoustic Piano (2), Synth Strings 1 (51), Standard MIDI drums
2478:Bass, Acoustic, Held Ev 110
1175:Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm PopCalypso Ev 100
1680:Guitar, 12-String Acoustic, Fingerpicking Ev 085
Soloist: 2448 Electric Background PopDreamyBrent Ev085 (is there any other? smile )

Hope you like it! Any comments are welcome.

Regards,
Rob

Lyrics:

All I want

All I really want. All I really need is your caring
When you reach for me, when you say that all is fine

And though there's less that I fear, still more than enough to worry
That's when you tell me that, that's when you say to just let it go

Some days we're miles away, never close enough
We keep the days within our minds.
They're never very far

What I never knew, is what I've come to find in your presence
Learn to feel at ease with myself. Letting days go by

And much sooner than I thought, those restless days seem to vanish
I'm getting closer now to ourselves, to who I could be

Some days we're out of reach. The longing's building up
We keep the days within our hearts. They're never far apart

All I ever want. All I ever need is your loving
When you tell me that, when you say that you're doing fine

There is so much more to see, so much more to learn when we want to
When I reach for you, when I say that I'm doing fine

At times we're miles away. Never close enough
We keep the days within our minds
We're never far apart

Nice tune, pleasant lyrics, and very nice vocal delivery.

The slow build really helped to introduce anticipation and presence.

Good overall balance

Another top notch production. I'm sure Anne Marie loves the birthday song. This is a good write and performance and you did a good job on the piano part and vocals.

beautiful.
Anne Marie should be proud of this song for her,
beautiful.

The soloist fitted perfectly.

The minimal video really suited the song.

Happy birthday next week, Rob!!

This is beautiful. I'm sure Anne-Marie must feel it was worth the wait. I particularly like the chord changes. Very intriguing.

Good write - a nice love song. Nicely produced, as always.

Well sung and recorded. Crisp.

Wow! Lots of thoughts on this one...

1)
Quote:
A love song I wrote for Anne-Marie's birthday.

As awesome as these words of love may be (and they are very compelling) the REAL love song is your life together. The words only describe what already is.

2)
Quote:
Although her birthday was last year, I finally came up with the song this year grin

she doesn't have a birthday this year too? wink

3)
Quote:

that worked out very well! The piano is perfect for the tune!

4) I really liked the guitar decoration in the middle. Sometimes such passages don't work in the context of the song, but this one was spot-on!

5) I always enjoy your chord progressions.. they are never cookie cutter duplications of a hundred other songs, and they always perfectly match the mood of the song!

6) Harmony is very good... I don't see any mention in your introductory details... did you get Anne-Marie to sing on her own birthday present??

7) I thought the lyrics were very touching... expressions of exactly the sort of thought process that we all go through when we stop thinking of ourselves as one, and progress to the realization that a couple can be understood as a singular entity. Your choice of words here is a good example of that:
Quote:
I'm (singular) getting closer now to ourselves (plural), to who I (singular)could be

8) this line is the clincher: when you find somebody who enables your understanding and makes life more alive and comfortable than it once was... that's what puts the love in the love song!
Quote:
What I never knew, is what I've come to find in your presence
Learn to feel at ease with myself. Letting days go by

9) Rob, every single time I hear one of your songs I am surprised all over again by the quality of your voice! You were born to sing and write songs! You've found your niche!

In summary, I think this is a beautiful song by any standard... but as a love song it sparkles like a diamond! If these words are a true indication of your feelings, It sounds like the two of you were destined to be together!

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!

The build, the progression, the lyric,
the melody and the typical great
vocal and mix all add up to one
heckuva birthday present. And it is
a perfect fit for the J&B marriage
also.

Thanks!

Wow! I really think this is a great song! It seems like it could be a Dan Fogelberg song to me. I really like the feel and execution of it.

+1 Trevor and charlie said what I was thinking. The guitar solo was a nice fit. Another great job. Thoroughly enjoyable. Tom

Thanks Pat,

We always appreciate your thorough comments, and the time and energy you put into it. A great asset to this forum!

I did the backing vocal myself on this one, seemed more appropriate for this song.
And yes, I'm going to have to write her another one for her upcoming birthday. Not sure if I'm going to manage this year, it's all a matter of inspiration (but then again, there's always next year laugh ).
The guitar decoration in the middle: the 2448 PopDreamy Brent realtrack always comes in handy. This realtrack is simply great, fits in almost anywhere.
The lyrics: pretty down to earth and direct. Not my usual style of songwriting. But I thought it was time these words were spoken in one of my songs.

Thanks again for your very nice comments!

In the past, I've written how your songs are fantastically sung and brilliantly produced...

But then I'll add start whining saying stuff like too abstract and stream of consciousness and blah blah whine complain... wink

This isn't one of those songs.

Great job, no ifs, ands or buts. laugh

Ha ha, thank you David.

Well, always feel free to share your thoughts about our songs whether they are generally positive, semi-positive or not positive wink

A question then, I visited your virtual singer development blog, also remembered some cool songs you created with vocaloid... any chance of creating some nice usertracks with these?

Just a thought.

I had the same hope, but didn't find the results to be satisfactory at all.

The voices are highly processed, so they don't really blend well as backing voices.

Plus, I only have the budget version of the Vocaloid editor, which only lets me build monophonic lines. But that's not the big issue.

Maybe someone else would have better luck than me... frown
