Easter is just around the corner... hop, hop..
If you were planning to give something up for Lent, there's only a couple of days left. smile
Hopefully it wasn't writing. Or producing. It's getting kinda slow around here...

This is a co-write with Bill Osofsky.
It's got nothing to do with the holiday (or religion).

GIVEN UP FOR LENT

honey, have you seen my titan's sweatshirt?
i can't find it on my closet shelf
in fact, i'm sure i loaned it to your brother
when he got bar-b-que all on his self
patience and forgiveness
ain't the only things i lack
nothin' that i lend him
ever seems to make it back

(chorus)
ya know i love ya, baby
i love your family, too
but your brother's just a moocher
five finger rendezvous
anything i'm missin'
i know just where it went
'cause everything he borrows
i've given up for lent.

that shirt he wears with f.j. on the pocket
ya know your brother's name is clem devine
his twelve piece black and decker set of sockets
i'd bet your mother's teeth that it was mine
i swear he's got a share of
everything i own
'cause every time we visit him
it looks like i'm at home

(repeat chorus)

(bridge)
they say a penny saved's a penny earned
apparently, a lesson that he's learned

(repeat chorus)

WHAT FUN!!! Really cute rocker with wonderful humor and craft. Is this a recent co-write Floyd? Mix and arrangement are flawless. A true gem!! Take care. Greg

Ahhaaa! Love that style. Those basic chords are sooo strong.
Fun everything about this song. A favourite of mine?

Thanks, Greg. Past year or so is when I "met" Bill... we've written several together...

Glad you like it, Richard. Should have known that line would be "right up your alley"... (one of Bill's). Thanks for the listen...

Hi Floyd.

I see you've reverted to type with this one and I have to say that no one on here does country better than you.

Clever lyrics. I'm sure lots of us know someone just like that.

Nice arrangement, production and mix. The whole package is just fully professional.

Another little pearler, great to have some toe-tappin' fun. Real comical lyrics, genius in fact!
Top production, mix, choice of instruments, absolutely everything.
Real nice
(I hope it's not a true story cry )

Floyd, the control worked perfectly. I think this hasn't been the case previously with those pages, but this time it worked great!

Hey Floyd,

I really like this - outstanding vocal and melody. I could hear Roger Miller doing this one. Very nice!

Reminds a little of "She's a Woman"by the Beatles.
My friend just know how write such good songs.
Excellent.

Hi Floyd,
So you lined up a few guitars again ☺
I counted 8!!!

Another song that I consider study material.
But first... Enjoying the song!
Great fun!

"that shirt he wears with f.j. on the pocket
ya know your brother's name is clem device"

LOL!

You know I'm a fan ☺

Things are a little slow here indeed, 4 songs in the pipeline, but just bought a Gretsch ☺, and we're going caravaning near saint tropez for two weeks ... So I'm taking a little break. Hopefully there's wifi there.

I have prepared a dvd with the best of the user Showcase forum to take along.

Always near you all!

Fred

PS The link works great!

Great comedy style write. Clever word-smithing.

On the topic.... I never lend anything with the hope of getting it back.

If I "lent" something to someone in the past, I consider it a gift. That's usually how it ends up anyway.

I'm generally fairly surprised when someone returns something to me in a timely manner. So imagine my surprise when my new brother-in-law comes to my house a day and a half later, says thanks.... and hands me the single nut driver bit I let him use.

floyd, This one has more guitars than my local pawn shop. Great editing on the leads. Top write, mix, production and performance. Congratulations on another fine piece of work. Tom

Hi Floyd,

very clever and funny lyrics.
Arrangement and presentation are your
usual high standard. Your consumption of
guitars is amazing.
My regards to Bill. A great collab.

Tom mentioned to me that the solo guitars needed some reverb.
So I added some and uploaded a new mix.
(Also corrected a lyric faux pas that he pointed out. HA!)
Thanks, Tom...

Hi there Floyd,

This is a nice 'working' style country song. Steady as always, I also very much like the talking in the end, haha.
Of course no soloist fits better here than Brent.
It's the first time I didn't have to use the Windows media player on your website. This new slider works flawlessly in my browser.

This one reminds me of a "song challenge" write. Your given a topic, or title or some starting point and everyone in the group returns the next week with their take of the challenge.

I use to be in a group like that and I enjoyed it immensely.

So if the challenge was "Given Up For Lent" this song would have knocked all the other entries clean out of contention!

Simply a super reinterpretation and development of a lyrical idea!

Thanks, Fred. I'm sure by now folks realize all those guitars are taking turns - all at once would be a train wreck... I am a little surprised that no one pointed out the mashup of SW and EV taking place...

Bwahahahaha....couldn't put that better.

Just when after 2+ years of listening to the many versions of the "floyd voice" you throw out one that is just enough different to wonder: Is it your delivery? The processing? The mix? Dunno, but it really works well with
this tune.

Engaging and clever lyric, melody the above mentioned vocal and a fine production, i.e., the old fj usual.

Guenter

Thanks, Guenter. Bill is an excellent lyricist - he has better prosody than some people who write both lyric and melody - sometimes I wonder how he manages that...

Thanks, Lawrence. Most of that was Bill's doing. I did some tweaking and polishing (and the music)... I did a "word play" song recently that was so over-the-top (with the word play) that my wife commented "If it were a competition, no one could come close... but why would they want to?" HA!

Hi floyd,

That was a terrific listen!!! Very catchy lyrics, very catchy melody and the rhythm had my feet dancing around under the computer chair.

The mix was crystal clear and the arrangement had a studio sound from start to end. There was nothing "BIAB" about this at all.

Kudos to you both on a spectacular song.

When I heard your vocals, it took me a bit by surprise. I don't know what you did but it wasn't the usual sound that I have grown accustomed to. Sounded fine though. I like it smile

Heading back to play it again ...

All the best,
Noel

P.S. Love the way you and Bill have worked this pun with the lyrics. It gives a whole new perspective on a very common phrase.

Excellent all round Floyd. Did you do something a little different with your vocal on this one? It sounded different but I couldn't quite put my finger on it. Maybe the country "twang".

Loved it.

I seem to be getting a number of comments that my vocal "sounds different" in this... I'm not sure I hear it - but it certainly must be so... This was done before I moved to Studio One (where I have changed the way I process vocals) - this would be somewhat drier... but it also may be the "attitude" that this lyric evokes... so I guess you hit the nail - delivery, processing, mix. smile

Thanks, Noel! The main pun was Bill's doing - and what drove the whole thing (obviously). Always good to hear that something "rises above" the BIAB "evidence". Interesting conundrum - we couldn't do this without BIAB - and we want everyone to know about it - but we still want to have a mix "get past" that... (see my comment to J&B about the vocal) - always glad to see you drop by! Where is the next Noel song???
