I wrote this lyric a long time ago and finally resurrected it and did it for this past fawm.org thingy.

Rides Her Appaloosa
(c) Emmrich 2015

(verse)
Sally lives in the city
streets are filthy she don't feel pretty
her chances slim but she won't give in
like her mama did
when she was just a kid

(chorus)
but at night sally rides her appaloosa
where no one calls her a loser
way out west life's a perfect score on a test
she don’t worry about her future
'cause she gets to ride her appaloosa

(verse)
Sees painted on the wall a desert flower
gotta hurry it's dark in less than a half-hour
walking home on 5th is kinda crazy
the boys might be lazy
but their words cut deeper
than a cougar's claws

(bridge)
the dishes clink like a western dinner bell
she hurries with the clean-up
so her mom won't begin to yell
Miss Thompson says the way out is education
but most here don't make it to graduation

(chorus)
but at night sally dreams of riding her appaloosa
where no one calls her a loser
way out west life's a perfect score on a test
she don’t worry about her past or future
'cause she gets to ride her appaloosa

Kevin: guitar, ukulele, vocals
BIAB: bass (1849), drums: (NashBrushBalDbKEv16^1-a), cello (1856), piano (1006)

Kevin,

For some reason this reminded me of Little Feat and Lowell George, so I enjoyed the listen a lot. smile

Then I just mellowed into your song and your uke playing.

wonderful

Nice song. I like what you did with the chorus and the rhyme. And I really like the line "Way out west life's a perfect score on a test"...good stuff!

The mix on this reminded me of a Don Williams mix. That is every piece is a perfect fit with no over production. Loved it.

This is fantastic!

Kevin,

The cello is really great in the intro. This is a terrific write. I found the lyrics very engaging and thought the melody was a fantastic framework.

Overall... top notch music.

Noel

Really, really, really nice song!! Wonderful feel, deep and thoughtful lyrics, and the perfect vocal. Love the sparse arrangement, love all the parts. There is one thing I would change in the mix. The uke sounds beautiful but I think at that level, it detracts from the rolling rhythmic bass line. I think bass and percussion could come up a bit and the uke down a bit. Absolutely love the song!! Take care. Greg

Like it all Kevin and suits your voice 100%.
Reminds me a bit of the Eagles.
Very laid back feel. Cheers.

Always enjoy hearing your songs, Kevin. Your sound is so distinctive.

The vocal in this is nicely recorded and processed.
(the drums are a tad low)

A good listen.

A couple of calls for more bass/drums and less ukulele. I didn't touch the uke, but I did increase bass compressor add back gain by 1.5 db and increased the drums by 1.8 db.

Not much but it seems to help: Rides Her Appaloosa at bandcamp (free streaming) (I didn't update the soundcloud version).

I'll get to individual comments a little later today.

Hey Kevin.

Just listened to the Soundcloud mix and thought it was mighty fine!

What a great song - powerful, yet at the same time understated. Lovely vocal performance.

Do we take this at face value, or is there something deeper going on, like she doesn't actually have an Appaloosa? Either way it works for me, though the delusional darker side is more intriguing.

Cheers, ROG.

gibson: I am a fan of little feat so I do appreciate any comparison to them!! Of course, I need to congas in there to come closer. Thanks for the listen and kind words.

srp: Thanks for stopping on by and giving it a spin -- it is appreciated.

Sergio: Thanks for taking the time to listen.

MarioD: First little feat and now Don Williams. I have one of his albums -- pure gold. Thanks for the kind words.

Noel: The cello was a good find, I am glad BIAB is adding realtracks like that. Thanks for the listen and comments!

Bob: Thanks for taking the time to give it a listen.

I'll get to the others a little bit later.

You are not only a fine writer and arranger but you
always arrange so well to fit your vocals. Yep, as
mentioned I can hear both Little Feat and Eagles
here....but I mostly hear your signature style
and that is a fine thing to have!

Great production.
