California

©2015 Robert Randall Burke

Well, I went to California
Cause they said it never rained
Nearly drowned down in Laguna
When the mud slides came
All the pretty people
Scrambling for fame
But nobody knows your name.

And all the saints and sinners
Are gathered by the sea
To hear the newest prophet
Who looks a lot like me
The thing you've always wanted
Is the thing you'll never be
And nobody knows your name.

California
California
Some day soon
I'll be comin' home.

Well I went out in the desert
Just to see the stars
And I ended up in Bakersfield
Playin' in the bars
But they don't need no prophets
So I didn't get too far
Cause nobody knows my name.

Tom's Waitin' on the corner
Tryin' to bum a smoke
I offer him a Camel
He takes a righteous toke
He says this music business
Is nothing but a joke
And nobody knows your name.

Awesome tune Bob. Loved the lyrics. Well done

Good song. And a lot of truth in those words.

Nobody wants to know your name these days.

Bob I enjoyed your song...your vocals, the lyrics and the instruments that you chose. I believe that all of us that have traveled in the music field have sooner or later experienced your song. Great write!

"And all the saints and sinners

Wow!

There's a pile of truth packed in this tune. Without parsing
the song out, suffice to say that we love it. It's right in
our Americana wheelhouse vocally, lyrically and production
wise.

Great vocal and a tight supporting arrangement and mix!

Well, Bob.

I've always been planning to visit California, but you're not exactly over-selling it with this song.

Still, it's got to be drier and warmer than England.

Loved the song, though.

Still singing from the heart and still producing the goods. Very professional from start to finish.

Cheers,

Prof.

I'll echo the others. "Very professional." "Great vocal and a tight supporting arrangement and mix." "Americana " "Awesome tune Bob."

All are true. Being from the deep south, I was a bit befuddled by the chorus in relation to all the verses taking place in -- 'California' -- While "Some day soon
I'll be comin' home." I think it is above my pay grade....

California

Some day soon
I'll be comin' home.

Regardless of my understanding or lack thereof, the chorus sounded good with the song and I thoroughly enjoyed my listen.

Wow, you're on a roll lately Bob!! Really nice song. Cool lyrics and a melody that carries them so sweetly. Really like the way you lingered on "California" in the B-section. Having lived in California my whole life, I have a different view than most visitors. There are some incredibly beautiful things here (Tahoe, Yosemite, San Francisco, the north coast, the wine country) but there are huge crowds, high crime, a lot of hot, flat ugly terrain, a LOT of poverty, and a government that doesn't work. Still, when I hear "California" in a song, I default to the romantic notion. Your take was about a whole different aspect of California, and you pulled it off beautifully. Great work!! Take care. Hey Professor -

Thanks for the listen. It might seem like I'm running the place down, but it's really just a reminiscence from a long time ago, and my lack of success there. grin
It's still my favorite State, and if you do visit, you will fall in love with it too.

Charlie,

Thanks for listening. It is not above your pay grade. That tense is confusing - I could have done it better.

Hey Greg,

Thanks for listening. Actually, I was not a 'visitor' - I lived in SoCal for 15 years, and miss it still, even though I haven't been there in 30 years. Part of me still longs to return, but I want to remember it as it was in 1970. It was a paradise back then.

Bob, I most definitely agree. You are on a roll! Love the melody in this one especially the second time you sing California. Some very nice choices were made there. I enjoyed the story and there are some lyrical gems in there. Very well done. Tom

Bob,

Maybe my all-time fav of yours.

Hard to type this on a phone.

The CA music references are great -nicely embedded. Surprised that Greg did not mention th JB feel of this.

All would be impressed to know that was mr waits...

Loved this

+1

I will add that I really liked your vocals on this! Plus the rhythm section was top notch.

Pretty song. Sounds great.
Bob, I'm a fan of the short chorus but I would've liked a tad more detail in this one to let me know who the singer is talking to.
If he'd have said, "Girl, someday soon, I'll be coming home" I would immediately know that he's talking to his girl at home which is why he said I'll be "coming" home.
If he's talking to himself and thinking about home or if he's talking to somebody else not from home, he'd have said, I'll be "going" home.
Beyond that little bit of confusion in the chorus, I thought it was a great song and beautifully done!

Great delivery - First listen feels like you are familiar with the song already. A really good listen.

floyd,

Thanks for the listen. You have a sharp eye - it is Mr. Waits in the song.

Mario,

Thanks. The rhythm section is all Peter Gannon!

Josie,

Thanks for listening. The chorus is the singer speaking to California itself. I'm sorry if it's confusing, but that's what the voices told me to write. grin
