No man is an island and life is better when shared. A love song wrapped in 3/4 time. Many thanks to the very gifted and talented Janice Merritt for the harmony vocals.

That Night

I’ve always been a self contained man

never have needed a thing

A family of one a brother to none

A bird with a broken wing

All My Friends said I was foolish

To never have taken a wife

but I pushed them away and until this day

I never had learned how to fly

It hit me as soon as I met you

After one look in your eyes

one became two forever with you

I don’t know why But I fell in Love that night

Now that my world ’s been upended

I try not to give into fear

I’m simply amazed when I look down these days

The view’s so much better up here

It hit me as soon as I met you

After one look in your eyes

one became two forever with you

I don’t know why But I fell in Love that night

Hi Tom.

A simple story, skilfully told.

A fabulously rich backing supporting a wonderfully expressive vocal delivery.

Tom, you just keep on getting better... and then, of course there's Janice!

What a gorgeous song! And yes the backing vocals are lovely. Great job!

BTW, I don't think the soundclick link works. You may want to check that.

Great song though!!

Tom
Very pretty song - nice lyrics - and a superb arrangement.
Vocals both lead and backing were spot on and on top of that a lovely acoustic guitar.

Great job as usual Tommy. The simplicity of the style is beautifully offset by the melody, and great harmonies.

The pedal steel sits perfectly in the mix.

Very nice

I enjoyed the storyline. Great write, mix, performance and arrangement at every level.

The forum songs are getting so good that whoever eventually figures out the streaming scheme or how to integrate the User Forum as one of the 50 new features in 20XX version of BIAB may be the next dot.com billionaire.

PGMusic (aka- Callie) are you listening? smile

This is beautiful Tom. Nothing like a love story in 3/4 time. Enjoyed it.

Regards and Merry Christmas,

You always blow me away with your production skills. That being said, the song is great! Your vocals are great and I like the lyrics. The big boys don't have anything on you.
By the way, do you know Mike Hedrick? He is very much like you in that he plays so many instruments...the pedal is his best know instrument. He has a recording studio in Jasper, TN not far from here in Chattanooga. We used him on one of ours albums when I was in a Southern Gospel Quartet.

Gorgeous writing, Tom.

"I’m simply amazed when I look down these days
The view’s so much better up here"

The very small number of words used to get to that point and make it so very powerful is a true lesson in "writing small". ZOWIE.

Your productions have gotten too good to even talk about.

Janice is...well.. Janice - what more needs to be said.

It's scary how good you have gotten.

A fan.

Good and effective writing here Tom!
The 3/4 works very well, so does Janice's smooth backing vocal.

Thanks, I have found the waltz steel real tracks are the best sounding ones. Thanks again for the nice comments. Tom

Tom,

What an amazing song with such an amazing sound! This is as professional as anything written, arranged and produced anywhere. You and Janice are a perfect musical combination.

As you've probably already picked up, much of my focus these days is on words. I'm a great admirer of lyric skill. When I listened to "That Night", I heard a textbook example of how to
  • develop lyrics
  • focus lyrics on a single theme
  • keep the tone conversational
  • engage the listener
  • make the listener feel like the song was written especially for him or her

To accomplish so much with so few words and to wrap it up in the elegance of simplicity is a huge compliment to your ability.

Heading back for another listen now...

Happy Christmas,
Noel

Sonny, Thanks for the great review. I am familiar with Mike Headrick. He has been in the steel guitar community for quite a long time now. Great player and teacher. Tom

Tom, it has been enjoyable reading what members
have written about this song. And you are, indeed,
very deserving of ALL the accolades offered here.
I could pile on some more but they would be
redundant. Beyond the fine vocal and production
is your ability to say so much with such an economy
of words. Sounds easy? No it ain't. Few words said
the right way can rip the paint right off your heart.
I've always admired this quality in writers dating
back decades to my bluegrass years. It's a pleasure
to now work on occasion with one!

Janice wanted me to express how much she love's
a waltz and how much she enjoyed being asked to
contribute to this.

Well done!

Bud
