Mt Warning is a landmark around these parts. It's so named because its unique landform served as a navigational waypoint to early seafarers as they journeyed the east coast of Australia. The mountain also has enormous Dreamtime significance to the local Widjabul people of the Bundjalung nation.

Again I went for bluegrass elements in essentially a country/blues song.

Mt Warning in the morning, skies have turned to grey
There’s something in the air besides the birds today
I’m like a broke-down engine on a lonesome railway track
The wheels are pointing forward but the piston’s blown its stack.

Mean old Mother stamps her feet upon the ground
She acts like she don’t want no-one around
Birds are looping crazy, trees shaking in their roots
Better batten down the hatches, put on your hiking boots.

Been hiding in the swampland, hanging out below
I have a premonition the whole thing’s gonna blow
I wish there was a name for how I feel
Anything at all to make it seem less surreal.

Mt Warning in the morning, valleys shimmer back to life
Dogs are homeward bound and so’s my wayward wife
Been sitting on the doorstep crying in my beard
Wondering where you been is the least of all my fears.

Papers full of piffle, papers full of lies
I’ve had it with opinion, it’s clogging up my eyes
Give me an honest creekbed, water lapping at my toes
Everything you need’s right under your very nose.

Come lie beside me darlin, let’s look up at the sun
It’s sheltered by the clouds so it won’t hurt you none
Come lie beside me sweetheart, stretch out your pretty feet
They say before too long we’ll be wilting in the heat.

Mt Warning in the morning, my head’s begun to ache
I’m standing in the shadows but I fear I’ve come too late
A hot wind blows and it’s picking up fast
Feels like I’m already living in the past.

Something’s in the woodshed yelling out in pain
Hope I never hear the likes of it again
I close my eyes still I hear it in my sleep
How you sow is exactly how you’ll reap.

My mouth is stuffed with sawdust, still I live in hope
Tomorrow will come cleanly and save us from the rope
The night is bitter as the day is long
God save us from ourselves and from all that we’ve done wrong.

Matcham,

Not sure if you intended it, but, the lyric is dream-like. The ever constant flow of the music added to that sense. Your guitar additions sounded good. - fj

That's a big song, Matcham. Beautiful imagery. I particularly liked:

"God save us from ourselves and from all that we’ve done wrong."

hi Matcham,

I see you've got just 14 posts, and this is probably the first one of them that I've seen. Welcome to the forum.

I thought your lyrics were very interesting... they don't flow in a linear fashion as when lyrics tell a story. Instead you seem to be painting a bunch of semi-related images all of which relate to the mountain. Interesting. The obscurity of the point you're making have the effect of forcing me to fill in the blanks, and that generally adds interest to a song.

I liked your guitar playing... it gives the song a live feel (which I like a lot). I could easily imagine sitting in a pub listening to a band play this song.

Do you perform live, by any chance?

Matcham,
I enjoyed the wry humour in your lyrics - makes me want to checkout the history of Mt Warning. Nice guitar solo!

Thanks for your comments everyone. A couple of interesting observations about the lyrics. Indeed I am more thematic/metaphorical than linear in my approach. I wrote and studied poetry in my youth and am still attracted to imagism. I hope though that the mosaic amounts to something meaningful to you as I don't aim to merely stuff a song with words. There is a controlling idea.

Yep Pat I do perform live, although not often with a lineup consisting of Nashville's finest!

I love the way you are using the tracks as an artist with a unique style. You don't sound like anyone else. Very unique!! You are carving out your own niche, and that is great.

Thank you David. Coming from someone who clearly hears a lot of original music here on the forum and elsewhere I take that as an enormous compliment.

Thanks too to others for the various shout-outs re vocals and guitar playing. I'm sure I'm not the only one here who never quite gets used to hearing yourself on playback.
