Well, I was out in the garden picking some mushrooms for my salad while listening to the Close to the Edge Album by Yes. I think I picked the wrong ones. Sorry about that.

I sure am glad I had those Xtra styles on hand though.

Long Distance Runner
By David Snyder

Prologue (The Delirium):

Blue Haze, Summer
Long Distance Runner
Blue Phase, Summer
Long Distance Runner

Verse 1

Think fast, moon blast
Seagrass, long past,
Love right, hang tight
Seems right
Light dust, moon rust
Clock out of water, clock of order
Mariner’s daughter

Ch:

Twist and shout
Cool haze of summer
Blue haze of summer
See past the border
Ring flash, sea splash
Twist and shout
Roundabout
Cool haze, cool haze,
Cool haze of summer
See past the border
Long Distance Runner
Knights of the Order
Long Distance Runner

V2

There is no dark side of the sun
It’s dark for everyone
Into the water
Long Distance Runner
Learn past, run fast, seagrass
Ten past the corner
Long Distance Runner

CH

Learn past, run fast, seagrass
Ten past the corner
Long Distance Runner
Long Distance Runner

Epilogue (The Redemption)
Think tall, see small
Run for the border
Run for the border
Long Distance Runner

David
Yes that was ambitious. Don't think I've heard anyone try anything like this.
Nice complex layered vocals & clever lyrics.
A lot going on in places conflicting with vocal a bit but really interesting and liked it a lot - (always loved Close to the EDGE & Fragile YES).

Hi David,

What kind of mushrooms do you eat in North Carolina ? smile
In France we've got wine grin
No, just kidding,
Your tune is very psychedelic, in particular the delirium, it's a very strange song, and very interesting as well

It's a ambitious project, and We are far from your usual music (country, nashville), I really enjoyed this one

NB : and what a great orchestration !

David,

This is so cool! Sounds like a lost song from Bowie's Low album - excellent! Loved it.

Bob
David.

Mind boggling. When you were young, I'll bet you drew on all the walls with crayons... when you weren't running wildly in circles around the house...

What a great sound! I hear the YES influence, but to me it was more like someone threw Supertramp and Steely Dan into a gunny sack, mixed it up, poured it out... and this is what happened...

Nice mix on this - everything (including the vocal - nice falsetto!) sits perfectly.

Well done. VERY cool.

Outside the box? What box?

I like this one David - but I would lay off the shrooms if I were you! grin

Far out, groovy and pass it on! Flashback to the 60's!

There is so much to like about this one that I don't know where to start. Great sound selection, mixing, vocals, vocal effects and the lyrics! WOW!

This is a keeper.
David,
The opening really works with your voice floating above the ringing guitars ( impressive playing!).
I think PG Music should hire you to create some really out there styles so that others could attempt this prog./pschedelic rock style.
Well done -to boldly go where music hasn`t been for far too long!

David,

I'm still dizzy from listening! I have no idea what to say. I've never heard anything like this on the forum ever.

The song is incredibly atmospheric. I have no idea how you managed to accomplish it but you've done it really well. You've unleashed a whole new side of BIAB.

Regards,
Noel
The Secret Sauce Revealed:

Hey thanks for the nice comments everybody. For those who wanted to know how this was done, I have some source material. In the drop box with my user tracks I put the organ part in both Finale and Midi. The instrument in Garritan/GPO5 is "full organ." For Finale users it should open right up. This part I had to play myself of course.

https://www.dropbox.com/sh/y4ujowwpqh5y42t/AABnCcRP8YYL6ydXzoebe2Nza?dl=0

This Rick Wakeman style part moves fast and goes against the BIAB backing tracks--kinda sorta you have two keys stacked on top of one another. The song is in C, but this part is playing in a ringing G modality--basically G7sus and Dm7 with a few odd notes--the G Bass note operating as a pedal throughout. This is what creates the momentum.

Over that, I am playing a hollow body electric with a riff that is in A minor, basically doing a lot of pull offs starting on the A on the 10th fret and walking down, hammering on the third and fourth string around the fifth fret then working my way back up. That creates the swirl. I laid out the entire composition in one Chorus in BIAB and killed most of the other instruments except for drums and bass until the opening is over, and then the whole band kicks in in that Starlit style (Xtra style.) The drum pattern is reversed. The intro uses a Chorus pattern (green) and the next section follows with a Verse drum pattern (blue) switching back and forth. One half of your brain is insisting the song is going Chorus Verse Chorus while the other half insists it is Verse Chorus Verse. That is when the hallucination kicks in.

The rest is just 4 separate vocal tracks doing a different melody with one "main" vocal track.

Anyway, with the Xtra styles and some homemade playing, it is possible to get that prog rock sound. It's fun. Give it a whirl!!

Thanks Peter!!!

Thanks Pradon,

Well as you guys say in France:

"Le beaujolais nouveau est arrive et ma femme est partie."

smile

Do you hear me brother??
The Low album? I'll take that!! Thanks Bob!!
Floyd,

How did you know? Were you spying???

Yes, this is precisely what happened. Sadly, when I was 18 years old, my parents cruelly threw me out of the house, telling that I had to get a job or go to college.

All I had to my name was a Twin Vibrolux, a Telecaster, a Les Paul Copy, an acoustic, a pair of boots, two pairs of jeans, one shirt, and a jacked up yellow Mustang.

I had to make it on my own man. Out on the road. Just screaming down the blacktop.

Maybe we could write a song.

smile
Ha ha ha!! Exactly!! That was funny!

Exactly what I was going for. Thanks Bob!!
Thanks guys. Where would psychedelic be without Amsterdam.

Thanks for keeping us real. And thanks for the memories.

smile
Thanks Mario. I am painting the bus now and mixing up a few batches. You in?

Should I swing by and pick you up? Got your axe?

Janis is passed out but I will wake her up when we get there.
Thanks Robert! Check out my first post. I listed the ingredients and put the finale organ part in drop box.

Thanks Noel! As I said in the reply up top, I have listed the ingredients and put the Finale organ part in drop box. That should give you a pretty good idea.

You bet your sweet bippy I'm in! That is as long as the side of the bus doesn't read The Partridge Family!

PS - I'll bring the Southern Comfort and the Lemon Lime Soda! Also maybe some hand rolled cigarettes wink

Seems like I spent a whole summer listening to Close to The Edge, really digging your avant garde biab excursion or exploration, has paid off handsomely into an entertaining experience.

I agree with Floyd (that happens a lot)! I love this musical collage!! You did some wonderful playing on this. FWIW, I think you picked the RIGHT mushrooms!! Take care. Greg
Wow!

You've taken creative use of BiaB to another dimension.

Simply amazing.
