Don't Need A Man To Make Me Feel Like A Woman

Leon sent me a song idea with Janice in mind.
It was an interesting lyric! – just had to fit lines such as:
Like a fish needs a velocipede
Had to look that one up on Wikipedia.

Fortunately for us Janice kindly agreed to sing – Leon obviously channeled his feminine side whilst writing this but I’m not sure it would have sounded right with him singing.

Lyrics – Leon
Vocals -the incomparable Janice Merritt
I played the guitar and put it all together

Thanks to Bud for recording Janice, feedback on the mix and encouragement.

The Band:

Horns – some old horn samples I had lying around

Don’t need a man to make me feel like a woman

You think that ladies love outlaws
But honey let me set you straight
What gets my temperature rising
Listen up, and I will relate
I need a man I can talk to
Who understands what I need
Not a stud with only one talent
I got to care for and feed

I don’t need a man to make me feel like a woman
Just need a man I can rely on to be true
I don’t need a man to make me feel like a woman
Just need a man I can rely on to be true

I’m looking for a man who’s not afraid
To reveal his softer side
A man who knows just when to push
And when to let it slide
I need a man who’s not a stranger
To poetry and art
Who’s gentle, kind and sensitive
But with a lion’s heart

I don’t need a man to make me feel like a woman
Just need a man I can rely on to be true
I don’t need a man to make me feel like a woman
Just need a man I can rely on to be true

You think that ladies love outlaws
Oh, but that’s been overstated
A lady wants a man to make her life
Easier, not more complicated
Some say a woman needs a man
Like a fish needs a velocipede
And while I don’t agree
There are certain qualities I need

You’ve got to treat me like an equal in every way
Pick up on the subtle signs I send
Pay close attention to every word I say
Be my demon lover as well as my best friend

I don’t need a man to make me feel like a woman
Just need a man I can rely on to be true
I don’t need a man to make me feel like a woman
Just need a man I can rely on to be true
Janice, Peter and Leon,

This is very entertaining! from start to finish.

The writing is strong, the melody is top notch, the arrangement is as creative as they come, the mix is excellent and Janice's vocals raise the proverbial roof (Janice, you've absolutely nailed singing the lyrics!).

I don't know what to say! For that reason, I'm leaving it up to you. Please choose whichever one or more of the below appeal to you smile

  • first class
  • stunning
  • totally enjoyable
  • professional through and through
  • clever
  • skillful
  • music at its best
  • absolute quality

All the best,
Noel

P.S. I'm in awe of anyone who can use 'velocipede' in lyrics and then set it to music!
Love the groove on this, a fun track! Guitar work is right on the money, as is the vocal (no surprise there!)
Nice one!
Nice work on this.

The groove fits Janice to the tee.
This song shines. A good fit for Janice's outstanding vocal. The addition of the horns really worked well to me.

Enjoyable all around.

Charlie
Very cool feel to this song. Excellent collaboration. Vocal, guitar, lyric and backtrack all excellent . Well done Janice, Peter and Leon...
Love the honky talk blues sound with the horns and organ - really cool arrangement. Janice sounds terrific.
Velocipede - really? LOL!

Fun song. Love it!

This rocks right from the off!

Nice guitar and the vocals handled so well, very tuneful and foot tapping.

Great solo and nice Brass.

Cheers.
Mike.
Thank you very much Noel. This was a LOT of fun!

Janice
Leon/Peter/Janice

A terrific listen. (I did have to look up "velocipede").

Everything is right where it needs to be. As I listened, I simply... Listened!

The horns work!

The vocal - golden.

Nice.
This is just so much fun to listen to. someday if I ever get good enough, I'm gong to write a song with the lyrics that match your voice.

Well, what can we add to all this positivity?
We'll give it a try:

Horn section beautiful
the ending of the song, just sounds like a real band.
And once again top-notch vocals by Janice!

OK...y'all need to be aware that this song killed my tea kettle. I had water on to boil, but when this song came on I had to crank up the volume and listen to it over and over. Consequently, I didn't hear the kettle whistling, and it boiled all the water out and turned the kettle red hod, melting the plastic handle. Bummer.

Very fun song, well delivered by all parties involved! Loved the guitar work, and Janice had her ABCs in order with a very Animated, Believable and Compelling performance!

You have more song-writing nerve than I do.. I'm not so sure I'd be willing (as a man) to write a song about what women want. But it certainly works as one point of view on a very complex topic!

Thanks Kenny. Peter and Leon handed me a good one!!

Janice
Well, well, well...

Ms. Janice, I would presume the lyrics were especially meaningful to you. The way you laid them down in the flow of the music -- the laid-back timing and the (seemingly) casual placement of them -- causes me to imagine that you'd probably know your way around a jazz ballad. To my ears, you possess the quality that the late Rosemary Clooney described as "talking a song", meaning that you make the lyrics sound like a story is being told. Personally, I'd love to hear you perform something a capella.

"PeterF" (as in Frampton? cool), I didn't know you played the gee-tar, boss, but I sho' know it, now! You're really slick with your "pick", dude! Also, the rhythm, the horn arrangement, along with the rest of the instruments, makes the song a whole bunch'a fun t' lissen to...

"Leon", your lyrics command attention. As "Pat Marr" stated, "you have more song-writing nerve than I do.. I'm not so sure I'd be willing (as a man) to write a song about what women want. But it certainly works as one point of view on a very complex topic!"

Agreed! But then, again, I don't think it would be all that complex to "write a song about what women want". Myself, I'd just fill in the verses with all of the things I've done "wrong" in a relationship, and then add the line, "Baby, I'm sorry!" to each and every one of them! Hah! blush laugh

Also, take note of the fact that, according to the genetic scientists, the "X" -- the female chromosome, which women have two of -- is present also alongside the "Y", in the male chromosome configuration, "XY". The "female" side that "peterF" mentioned is almost without exception in all of us males...

Now, where did I put that dog-gone "X" chromosome??? I just know it's in here, somewhere... smile

LOREN (a.k.a. "bluage")

Wow, this is just so sensational.

Thank you Loren. Bud has told me the same thing about talking a song. I appreciate your kind words. We both feel that the most important thing for any song of any genre is that it has soul. That makes it for us and I do my best to try to sing that way. And when you get handed a great song like this it is so much fun.
