PAPERBACK (lyrics by Chris Spruit)

(V1)
Taking the road, I never walked
into the silence I did not talk
leads me to a crossroad
Heard a song
la da di la da di lada dia
and I knew I’ve heard it before

(V2)
And in the sky, I heard that noise
way in the distance, I had no choise
leads me to a garden
Birds in the sky
la da di la da di Lullaby
and I knew I’ve been here before

CHORUS:
And a road winds back
and my ink turns black
running down the paperback
what a great time dried
in the eyes of a child-
hood lies
deep down, inside

Solo

(V3)
Recalling a word, I never quote
writing a sentence, I never wrote
standing at the crossroad
a world, build blind,
in defense of a broken mind
But it makes no difference.

CHORUS:
And the road winds back
and my ink turns black
running down the paperback
what a great time dried
in the eyes of a child-
hood lies
deep down, inside

Solo, outro vamp

Song also up on soundcloud here: Paperback but sounds better on reverbnation to my ears.

Nice work.

Loved it from the drum intro at the start. Nice guitar licks. Well played solo.

Good work all the way around. Good singer too.

A bit long.

All in all, a good song and a good job with the project.

Lovin' us some Strat!

The write is very engaging and the fine vocal performance really brings it all home.

The production shines on the KRK's -- superbly engineered with a nice open mud free mix.

Yep, we love it!

Thanks guys! Yes, I thought Chris did a great job on both the write and the vocal. And thanks for the positive comment on the production, I spent many hours on it so I appreciate the feedback smile

Dave & Chris...

Y'all get better with each release. This is excellent.

A good write. Interesting - and "engaging" as Bud said... Excellent vocal - "comfortable" sounding...

Cool drum start. Gorgeous leads - love that tone! Excellent mix.

Great listen. Exceptional!

Thanks, Joe! Especially the comment about the guitar. Normally I don't spend much time on the lead parts, but for this song I did quite a few takes before coming up with something I was happy with.

Floyd, thanks so much!

The last 18 months or so has been a real learning experience for both of us as far as a songwriting team goes and a hell of a lot of fun!

Your comments made my day, and I'm sure will make Chris's also once she has seen them, thanks again smile

Wow! Those Santana type guitars just had me hooked from the very first note. Beautiful vocals. Well done!

David and Chris,

You've launched yourselves into orbit with this one. It's fantastic! I thoroughly enjoyed everything about it. The drums intro is a perfect choice to lead the way into such a great blues sound.

Chris - your singing sounds so very comfortable and it's easy to tell that you're enjoying every minute of your performance. My favourite lyrics are those non-word syllables....very creative, and very effective to listen to!

All the best,
Noel

Thanks very much, Noel smile

I love the non-word syllables too. Most of the time the way Chris and I work is I will come up with the basic idea for the music bed, verses, chorus, bridge, etc., and will build a basic bed that I send over to her. She then starts developing the vocal melody and lyrics and I may then change the basic bed if needed to work with the lyric flow she needs.

In this particular song she had only written a couple of lines for the verse but she wanted me to hear what the vocal melody sounded like to make sure I liked it, so the demo she sent back had all these non-word syllables in it, and I thought it sounded fantastic! So, I asked her if she could incorporate some of that into the final write, which she did.

Thanks again, very much appreciated!
