I wrote this back in '85, and forgot about it. It's a lousy vocal. grin

Rio Grande

©1985 Robert Randall Burke

He's got a girl in Texas
Tells her he'll be comin' home soon
But the bright lights of the city
Took much more than they had to.

Help me darlin'
I'm sleepin' in the subways
And I just don't understand
Livin' in Manhattan
Longin' for the Rio Grande.

Well, the jobs, they don't come easy
When there's a hundred more in front of you
And he's dreamin' of the country
Where a man can do what he wants to.

Thinkin' of a girl
Standin' down by the river
With a flower in her hand
Livin' in Manhattan
Longin' for the Rio Grande

He's got a girl in Texas
Tells her he'll be comin' home soon
But the bright lights of the city
Took much more than they had to.

Thinkin' of a girl
Standin' down by the river
Lord, I hope she understands
Livin' in Manhattan
Longin' for the Rio Grande
Livin' in Manhattan
Longin' for the Rio Grande

WOW Bob!!! Beautiful!!! A nice melancholy tale, so well told. Love the "band", great mix and arrangement. And your vocals (always great) have never been better. This is AWESOME!!! Take care. Greg

Hey Bob,

I enjoyed this... And I didn't think the vocal was that lousy! grin
I was gettin a sorta Marty Robbins thing. A good write.

I've found a few gems looking back on some of the stuff I wrote in the 80's as well. The older we get, the better we were! wink

Nice job on the mix & arrangement too.

Well done.

HI Bob,

If this is a lousy vocal ... sign me up for lousy. Sounded terrific to us. The acoustic 6 string has such a nice tone and was the perfect touch. Loved everything about this, We both thank you for a terrific listen.

"Livin' in Manhattan
Longin' for the Rio Grande"

Nice.

A good write, Bob (as are all of yours). A little "word-y" for you, eh? smile

Nice production for the song - simple, yet full as it should be.

Hope all is well out there in the boonies...

Really nice song Bob. Your bad vocals are way better than my good ones. I could listen you all night or until the beer runs out. I enjoyed it a lot! Tom

Amen.....

A world of folks would pay big money to be able to sing like that.

Not comparing it per se but we got lots of images of Marty Robbins, Willie, The Highway Men, The Flatlanders, etc.

Nice!

Hi, Bob !:))

Rio Grande means
nostalgia for me
as I still can recall
when we rafted down
that beautiful river
quite a time ago !
(that was from Santa Fé)

A very beautiful tune
is your tune and it made
me long for Rio Grande too !

Cheers

A wonderful tune. It has a sweet "Sunday Morning Coming Down" vibe. And I love that nylon guitar.

I enjoyed my listen. This is a very comfortable sounding melody and fits perfectly with the backing.

Yet another fine creation for your burgeoning catalogue!

Bob, what a great song! Nothing wrong with your vocal! The last 2 lines of that chorus are fantastic. If Marty Robbins would have had this one when he was still around it would have been a number1 for him. I could really hear him in this one. Thanks, Torrey.

Bob, I think I like this as much as anything I have heard from you. As for the vocal. Perfect vocals are nice but the song is what counts. I don't claim the greatest voice, myself, but I like to try. I don't see a thing wrong with this. I like it a lot. It is real, and that counts, in my book.
