After The Sunset - Lyric Video

Pardon me while I wax philosophical. I just lost one of my dearest friends yesterday to cancer. We worked together side by side in the ministry for over 30 years. As I was driving home from spending time with him and his family Sunday evening, I was contemplating how powerful a force music is.

Music literally impacts all 5 senses. God has used it to minister healing to me so many ways and times. So I wrote this song as the person Music singing to me.

This is not a sad song, just contemplative. I played all the keyboards. There is one Realtrack - the acoustic guitar. The piano sound is the Alicia's Keys in Kontakt 5. The orchestration is mostly EastWest with a bit of Logic Pro X softsynth mixed in.

I hope you enjoy this one.

After The Sunset
©Stephen W. Young

You were just a child when you first heard me
I was singing in your car
A melody that moved your feet
And settled in your heart

You joined a band so you could know me
You learned to play an old guitar
But that piano set you free
And you played with all your heart

After the sunset
Will you still remember me
Will I be forgotten
Or a distant memory
Will you sing along with my old songs
And dream about your friends
After the sunset

Sometimes I sing about the future
At times I sing about the past
I sing of winners and losers
And questions never asked

After the sunset
Will you still remember me
Will I be forgotten
Or a distant memory
Will you sing along with my old songs
And dream about your friends
After the sunset

I am more than just a melody
More than empty words
I'm the fragrance you remember
When you try to forget the hurt

After the sunset
Will you still remember me
Will I be forgotten
Or a distant memory
Will you sing along with my old songs
And dream about your friends
After the sunset

Hi Steve,

First, I am so sorry you lost such a dear friend. Please accept condolences from Di and me.

This such a beautiful and quietly powerful song. It literally brought tears to my eyes - I tend to be a little emotional. But this transcends emotion and tugs at the inner soul and one's civility and humility towards the gifts He has given us - our close friends among the most cherished of those gifts.

I'm sure you will be remembered. God bless and strength to you and his loved ones.

Steve,

Man this is so beautiful! That subtle silence/pause just before the chorus does wonders to the song.
The chord progression of the chorus itself is super.
And then of course your voice. Beautiful as ever!

I'm very sorry for the loss of your friend.

Steve,

So sorry for your loss.

This song is one of the most beautiful writes I've heard in a long, long time. Brought to mind the songs that come from a collaboration between Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin - as good as it gets.

Your productions and vocals are always top notch - but this might beat them all in both regards.

WOW.

So powerful, but at the same time also relaxing and beautiful, I really like the chord progression and your vocal. Very nice details in the arrangement, especially the acoustic guitar and cello. The power of music is deeply present.

Hello, Steve

So sorry to hear of the loss of a good longtime friend.
Very beautiful song.
The quiet but powerful melody and your pleasant vocal deeply reach into my heart.
I like very much the chord progression of piano intro. G - D(F#Bass) - Dm(Bass) - A7sus4(Ebass) - A7, maybe.
It is really nice.
Elegant and discreet orchestration is also wonderful.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Dear Mr. Young...

If I didn't know better, I would have sworn that I was listening to this misty, meditative song on the radio! The production quality is that professional.

"After The Sunset" is a sublimely beautiful title for the song. I agree with what you said that "this is not a sad song, just contemplative". The lyrics ache with the weight of memory and its accompanying nostalgia. The string arrangement is one of the most symphonically "true" sounding virtual orchestral renditions I've ever heard on this forum. Your piano playing is somber, quietly powerful.

If that was you singing, you could have pulled this off without the music, a capella. Your vocal track was just that sensitive and yearning in its effect.

Losing people we love deeply usually leaves a gaping hole in our hearts that rarely gets filled in our own lifetimes. Nonetheless, your musical testimonial to your late friend floats down from the heavens to cover that hole like a blanket of affirmation of the spiritual bond you both enjoyed while he was alive.

Respectfully,

LOREN

I could have sworn I posted in here already! I must have just forgotten to hit enter.

How could I not, this tune is so wonderful. And I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I know you said the song is not meant to be sad, but more contemplative, but I do find some sense of sorrow in it, but a beautiful sense of sorrow.

I especially love these lyrics:

"I am more than just a melody
More than empty words
I'm the fragrance you remember
When you try to forget the hurt"

Keep up the amazing work. It's amazing how much music can heal our pains, and I am glad to see you are still creating despite all you have been through.

Steve,

I'm so very saddened to hear about the passing of your good friend. Saying goodbye to those who have been an important part of our life is never easy. I offer my sincere condolences to all.

This is a stunning composition and presentation. I found it impossible to listen to without being emotionally moved. Everything about it glistens. Your playing is superb, your melody is sublime and your arrangement made my imagination soar. I loved the bridge. This is one of the best songs I've heard, ever.

Absolutely beautiful music.

Thank you for starting my day in such a glorious way.

There's not much left to say.

Your statement about how music affects the five senses is thought provoking. The touching documentary on Glen Campbell's last performances so well reinforces this.

As always with your productions the performances, the arrangement and the mix are bar setting high.

This is a lovely and moving tribute to your lost friend and may he rest in peace.

Thanks so much, Rob. I wanted the two chord transition/pause into the chorus to build just enough musical tension to draw you into the chorus. Glad you like it.

Floyd, thanks so much! You really made my day with your comments.

To be even compared to Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin is the ultimate compliment in my book. I Can't Make You Love Me is one of the greatest songs ever written, in my opinion. (I'll bet Bonnie Raitt would agree with that opinion.) smile

I take your comments very seriously, as I really look up to you as one of our "heros" (among many) on this forum. You continue to elevate the power and relevancy of Band In A Box by the quality of your work that you present here. Thank you!

Steve, I am choosing my words very carefully here in this comment. This is without a doubt one of the greatest songs (if not the greatest) ever posted on this forum that I have heard! I know that's a strong statement, but I feel it's justified! It's such a paradox to think how it sometimes takes something so sad to give birth to such a beautiful thing (song in this case). I could hear in your voice the pain involved in the performance of the song. You have written a very special message here that I believe will speak to people many years from now! This one is perfect and please don't change a thing with it! Thanks for sharing and may you be strengthened in God's love! Torrey

Thank you to all of you who have said such nice things to me about this song. This one has a special meaning to me, and I so appreciate all of your kindness! Thanks Cuz (Tommyc) for "resurrecting" this one. I have been out of pocket so much the past few months due to work and dealing with the loss of a few friends and loved ones the past several months.

Torrey, your words are very encouraging, and humbling. Again, thank you to all of you! This forum is very much like a family to me! God's blessings to all of you!
