Great job on this, RichMac smile I found this tune to have an almost "menacing" quality if you will. There's a unique essence to this that drew me in. It almost reminds me of certain songs by King Crimson - which is most definitely a good thing in my books.

Thanks so much for sharing!

Excellent backtrack. Very cool lyric and vocal. Well done

This is definitely a different style of tune then I am used to hearing on the User Showcase! It has an almost ominous feeling to it. I really enjoy ir, and I especially love these lyrics:

Blinds pulled tight
Self-made man
Keepin' out tomorrow like you
Had a plan

Awesome job!

Hi Eric
Sorry to be slow in replying.
Changed a few chords and things and put up another version.
Thanks for listening and enjoying the song.

Thanks for the listen and comments Deryk.
Glad you caught the danger in the song.
(the walls are not coming down they're going up)
And thanks for the mention of King Crimson my heroes of 40 years ago.
If I could imitate them I would do it in a flash.
Cheers.

Hey Rich,

I really like this song a lot!!! Great music and lyrics.

From a mastering stand point, you need to add a little boost to the volume. On the Windows volume meter slider (which is sort of a handy meter) it is only coming up about a quarter of the way, which tells you it is at a much lower volume than what is out there by most people.

To solve MOST mastering problems, I have two quick fixes:

1.) Get the mix as CLOSE as you can to balanced and EQ'ed for each track, then export it. Then buy Lurssen Mastering for $156, select a preset and hit render. You are done.

2.) For the free option, google Variety of Sound and download their entire package. Get to know each plug in. A remarkable value for free. (32 bit.)

Use the BootEQ on as much as you want. Even the master bus. You can turn on a tube amp simulator, dial in the precise amount of frequencies you want, and also use the gain knob on the left to boost the sound.

If you are not already using Audacity, learn how to use that for the final, final export and just set the normalization to -.5 or something and you will be good.

Great song though!!!

Enjoyably ominous-I really liked the lyrics and your gritty vocal suits the song.
As David says, it does come through at a low volume and that reduces the "heavy" sound the song deserves, but this is my favourite of your recent songs.

Thank you Ember.
You write such nice things!
Sometimes I worry about my songs but I'm glad they're a bit different.

I hope you realise David how much I appreciate your taking the trouble to send such a practical and useful set of comments!
Have been busy playing with Boot EQ.
Great fun with all the knobs. I hope the amended version is a little better.
Have printed your post off and will definitely spend time working through all the points.
Thank you again and Cheers.

Hey cool man!! Sounding good. Keep fiddling with those knobs!

Have fun with those Variety of Sound plugins. I hope you downloaded the whole pack.

Experiment with all of them on different tracks. There is a nice plate reverb VST in there, and the Ferric TDS module (tape simulator) is really nice on the master bus to add some glue, as well as putting the BootEQ on the master bus too.

The BootEQ is a down and dirty fix for almost everything (like drums) and can be used in hundreds of situations.

If I were on a desert island and could only take one plugin (as they say) I would take my BootEq.

Rich,

It's great to see you back posting! You've been missed smile I enjoyed this one. I found it refreshing to listen to a song in a minor key. We don't hear that too often in music these days. I'm with floyd, this is definitely one of your best!

Welcome back again,
Noel

Going a bit dystopian are you? We've always liked these edgy mysterious tunes.

The lyric, the vocal and the arrangement are all hittin' the note to create the just dark enough sound.

Different AND good.

Thanks Robert.
Gritty is probably the polite word for it.
Was going to be heavy metal but then I came across those guitar RealTracks and lightened up a bit. Glad you liked it.
Cheers.

Hey, there, "RichMac"...

I think you're channeling Pete Seegar with your song, "When The Walls Come Down", in that the lyrics resonate with the message conveyed in "If I Had A Hammer", which is the idea that the communication needed to effect change won't happen 'til some ideological hammers start to swing to make some dividing walls come a' tumblin' down!

Your lyrics have sharp points on them, and your voice delivers their meaning like a man attempting valiantly to defend himself in an unfair fight:

"Blinds pulled tight / Self made man / Keepin' out tomorrow like you had a plan..."

"What you gonna do when the walls come down? / Light streams in / Take a hard look 'round..."

Oh, yes, sir, plenty of intellectual ammo for a spirited debate here, for certain, and nicely wrapped up in an anthem-like musical coat!

Gritty, urgent songwriting, this is, "RichMac". It could make difference to anyone who listens to it.

"Going a bit dystopian are you?"-J&B

Nah I'm happy enough. (maybe a bit mad)
I think it's the rest of the world that's dystopian. (had to look it up)
What with walls going up, extreme nationalism, sabre rattling and protectionism
what would happen if the walls came down. (of course I have no idea)
Good song theme though.
Glad you guys enjoyed it.

Cheers.

Hey Rich, that was some neat sounding stuff!! Good use of those instruments playing off of each other right at start of the some and continuing on through. Kind of a dark mood to the song but it works well. Take care, Torrey

Thanks Torrey.
I do enjoy making these songs and hope to improve as a technician.
The voice i'm afraid is only getting worse at 77.
And I love the comments.
Cheers.

So glad you find these things interesting.
I try not to be boring.
And yes the dark side seems to fascinate me.
