(inspired by the episode from the podcast This American Life: A Marriage of Inconvenience, by Christopher Rhoads)

A Marriage of Inconvenience (2/17/2018)

She’s my tattoo baby, and she just got outta’ jail
She’s one hard drinking lady, spent my last dime on her bail
She’s my strong-armed woman, calls me daddy when she wails

I was a teacher of wisdom way back in my younger days
Walked the straight and narrow, knew every word on every page
Now I spend most of my time lord, in a drug-fueled drunken haze

She frightens all the neighbors, when she steps out in the neighborhood
And I’m tired of explaining that my baby’s here for good
Then she’ll flash me that wicked grin, when I say she’s just misunderstood

Nothing last forever lord, and I’ll soon be coming home
She says we shall pass together, because I’ll be too sad to see you gone
So we seek out stormy weather, and a stone to rest upon

She’s my tattoo baby, and she just got outta’ jail
She’s one hard drinking lady, spent my last dime on her bail
She’s my strong-armed woman, calls me daddy when she wails

Yeah. Inconvenience.
Raunchy lyrics and driving background.
Raspy Lawrence vocal.
All just right.

Cheers.

Yeah, I love this! Great song, great lyrics and awesome vocal.

But man, the production!! The way you bring in the B3 at just the right time for example ... very cool. And then when you bring in the entire band ... WOW!

And mix on this is killer, everything sounds perfect, would love to know your process.

Well done!!!

Lawrence,

An excellent write. I'd quote my favorite lines, but that would be the entire song.

Needless to say...excellent vocal.

As Dave said - this is one heck of a production. That acoustic is sweet! The build is exquisite.

The mix sounds terrific. Top-shelf stuff here...

Wow - I thoroughly enjoyed this! You can feel the raw sincerity in this tune for sure. It has a real edge to it. I also enjoyed the gradual build up on this one. How you introduced each new instrument in one at a time - it really made it engaging and fun to listen to.

Great work, and thanks so much for sharing smile

Excellent song, vocals good and strong, the acoustic takes the rhythm and the backing track organ and lead guitar gives it that soul. Love it

Thank for the kind words Dave. I was a bit worried that I may have held off the drums for too many measures but in the end I did what came natural and didn't over think it. So I'm glad to hear that you liked it.

As for the mix, I have been using a judicious amount of reverb and delay lately. In this mix I have two reverbs, a delay, a slap-back, and a plate, and although not every instance is on every track there is a good amount of stacking. Also, I treat each instance as though it were an instrument in the mix. That is to say I eq them, I pan them, I may compress them, I will usually sidechain compress to the vocal so that the decay gets squashed when the vocal attacks. One metaphor that I like is I think of the instruments as a fish and the reverb is the water.

Now this is the blues!

Everything about this is perfect. I loved the vocals and the lyrics. I really liked the way you handled the dynamics on this one. And that mix..... WOW!

This is a keeper for sure and FWIW I think this should be on the radio right now!

Thoughts:

We love the blues. We love a shuffle blues all the more. We are big gruverider fans.

Having all this in one package is just over the top good.

We could loop this for 30 minutes and enjoy every second.

Man, this oughta be playing over the credits of an HBO series.

The vocal, write, arrangement and build have all been mentioned. As good as it gets.

You could play this for a room full of producers and not get a nit picked.

Outstanding!!!

Gruverider, you've done it again. Great song, love the blues!! Your song incorporates so many things I was just writing about today. A really good title with a spin on it. Interesting lyrics that show and paint pictures and not just tell. A good bluesy tune and great vocal delivery. Prosody in action!!!

Very cool blues tune. I love these tunes. Had a hint of the Lachy Doley group. Super vocal. The acoustic was very cool . Excellent guitar break..

Excellent Job Lawrence! The slow buildup of the song worked well! Your vocal, as usual, could not be any better! Your overall production of the song is very professionally done! Thanks, Torrey

Outstanding! Everything about this song works tremendously well. You should write an entire album around it...

One of your best vocals as well.

Thank you Floyd. I just love working in this genre and BIAB does a super job with it. I feel like I could write a song for every version of the blues that they have a style for and never get board.

Deryk, I'm glad you enjoyed it. I've been trying different proximities to the mic and got closer than I usually do for this one. And that guitar is played so well I felt it needed the spotlight so I went with the slow build.

This one is directly from the French Quarter dripping with authenticity. I’d be sitting there all night with no intention of leaving before closing time. Brilliant through and through. Your production skills are hitting new highs. Loved it all, Tom

Thank you for the kind words. I use to go listen the "Braille Blues Daddy" Bryan Lee at the Old Absinthe House in the Quarter way back when. Man those were the days!

Hello, Lawrence

Excellent vocal! Your vocal is very strong.
It fits very well this traditional blues style song.
It is really comfortable to reach the climax where instruments increased gradually.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Wow! Ok that was outstanding! What a write! Great vocal, production, mix, build, everything. It's all been said... But I'll second it!

I think my favorite line is:
"She frightens all the neighbors, when she steps out in the neighborhood"

Good Stuff! grin

Thank you Greg. That line was directly inspired by the story from the podcast. It's a strange and wonderful life.

This song has such a nice groove to it. I found it really cool that a podcast inspired this particular material. I might have to look in to it on my spare time for comparison.

I especially liked:

"She frightens all the neighbors, when she steps out in the neighborhood
And I’m tired of explaining that my baby’s here for good
Then she’ll flash me that wicked grin, when I say she’s just misunderstood"

You did a great job. Thanks for sharing!
