How to put music to a poem from the early 17th century?
– well, with a little help from BiaB…

John Donne wrote a beautiful poem called The Good-Morrow.
Don't know how the copyright act works overseas – in Norway lyrics are free after 70 years. Please, tell me if I do anything wrong.

Not a traditional song, but it sounds familiar…
Already thinking of new vocal ideas – guess I have to try them out in a couple of weeks or months ;-)

Here is what it sounds like today:

THE GOOD-MORROW

BiaB tracks used:

Style is _SPECTER.STY

RealTracks in style: ~733:Bass, Acoustic, Jazz Ballad Sw 060 (A:in-2)
RealTracks in style: 936:Piano, Acoustic, Rehearsal Waltz Sw 140

And the poem:

The Good-Morrow
BY JOHN DONNE

I wonder, by my troth, what thou and I
Did, till we loved? Were we not weaned till then?
But sucked on country pleasures, childishly?
Or snorted we in the Seven Sleepers’ den?
’Twas so; but this, all pleasures fancies be.
If ever any beauty I did see,
Which I desired, and got, ’twas but a dream of thee.

And now good-morrow to our waking souls,
Which watch not one another out of fear;
For love, all love of other sights controls,
And makes one little room an everywhere.
Let sea-discoverers to new worlds have gone,
Let maps to other, worlds on worlds have shown,
Let us possess one world, each hath one, and is one.

My face in thine eye, thine in mine appears,
And true plain hearts do in the faces rest;
Where can we find two better hemispheres,
Without sharp north, without declining west?
Whatever dies, was not mixed equally;
If our two loves be one, or, thou and I
Love so alike, that none do slacken, none can die.

John this is top shelf all the way. Your instrumentation is perfect for this poem as is your chord progression. Your vocal is absolutely fantastic and I love the effects you on it.

This is a keeper.

Einar: I love this, nicely done. What a cool idea. (And being me, I have to ask "Oh my gosh, what has John Donne?")

Nice progressive rock sound - nicely performed and sung with some nice guitar passages.

Much impressed.

Songwriting partnership over the ages! Yes, I think this is a great idea, and nicely executed...you chose style/approach/instrumentation that fit so naturally..thank you for putting your creativity into this...especially liked the line that you spoke/sung concurrently...maybe Donne didn’t have any skilled musician buddies to work with??

Wow, this is incredible smile What a unique and abstract idea - and you managed to pull it off brilliantly! The whole tune just flows so nicely, from the lyricism to the progressions and arrangement. The entire song just works so perfectly. It showcases some serious creativity and a good grasp on songwriting.

You outdid yourself here - thanks so much for sharing smile

Thanks Mario,

John is definitely top shelf!!!
Couldn't stop thinking of what Hendrix did to Hey Joe!
So I tried to extend his brilliant idea in 12/8 for the chorus, and ended up with Hey Good-Morrow ;-)

Floyd,

Thanks for your nice compliments. The words in the poem came very much alive to me during this process – someone once told me that a soaring cello is the the most beautiful instrument in the world – and in BiaB I found a RT-cello that sounded great – not too much, but enough to bring a different dimension to the arrangement.

Thanks for listening!

Nothing wrong to my ears! laugh

You did a fantastic job making some very dense prose enjoyable. I'm super impressed by all the aspects of the song - it was a very fun listen. The doubling at "And now good-morrow" was especially cool.

Very cool, creative interpretation of those amazingly sensual and metaphysical lines!
Excellent arrangement and production skills are on show here in addition to your fine vocal.
Well done!

Thanks! Partnership over the ages…
A bit scary – the soul/voice of the poem was so strong I couldn't find any better words – it was all Donne! ;-)

Taking an old poem and putting music to it! And the end product was so sublime. I think that this was such a cleaver idea, and that you did a really great job here.

Thanks for sharing!

Not the kind of thing you hear on the forum very often, But it's very well succeeded!

Wow what a cool song. Loved what you did with these lyrics. The vocal and harmonies were just stellar. Guitar was just super as well. What really stood out for me was how well done the mix is. Just an excellent song all around..

What a stunning exquisite work... I would love to see a video showing how you put this artistic piece together... the choices you made from start to finish... I am truly impressed!

I think this is terrific, a great setting of a great poem. You sound what I think Donne would have sounded like, and I imagine a video set in Lincoln's Inn. Probably 400 years is enough for the copyright to expire, but not our interest.
