"Follow your dream!"

OR

"Don't quit your day job."

At some point everyone needs to make a choice...

The best you can do is be happy with what you've got.

A song about unrealized dreams and the "settling in"...

If you haven't ever used the nylon guitar RTs, you need to give them a try.
They are a big part of this production.
For this, I used a chunk of it as a "signature lick". Another area that some folks have stated "BIAB can't do". Not true.

MONTANA SUNSETS

i'm gonna be a cowboy
i'm american you know
where a boy can be what he chooses
and dreaming will make it so
but for now i'll do what the folks expect
say what they want me to say
but let it be known, until i'm grown
i'm living for the day (when i'll)

  watch montana sunsets
  talk with an indian guide
square dance at a neighbor's ranch
then hit the range and ride

i found someone who shares my dream
the circle t's in sight
i'm gonna be a cowboy
we'll sing prarie songs at night
but we can't leave things unfinished here
folks depend on us
but as soon as we get the loose ends to fit
it's montana or bust

  and we'll watch montana sunsets
and talk with an indian guide
  we'll square dance at a neighbor's ranch
then hit the range and ride

i was handy with a six gun
i could have scored in a rodeo
but sometimes things do come up
you know how these things go
we never made montana
but i still sometimes dream
of cattle drives and tumbleweed
of hearing eagles scream

  martha, bring my slippers
  bring my tv guide
  john wayne's on tonight
he'll hit the range and ride

  the sun sets in montana
  where cowboys still reside
it's late night in new york
time to hit the range and ride...

pleasant dreams, martha.

Have at it.

Your voice is in fine form.
You made your point about nylon strings in a wonderful arrangement.

Floyd,

I love everything about this song...

Your vocal, the sentiment and production is stellar.

"the sun sets in montana

Now that is awesome!!!

Very cool vocal Floyd. Such a cool story in your lyric. Another home run !!! Guitar was sweet..

Fabulous! Writing is just so good ... I'm with Bob, I love that chorus especially.

Excellent vocal, and the way you use the harmonies in key spots, "where a boy can be what he chooses" for example, is the sort of thing a good producer would bring to a session.

I guess you are using a piece of that acoustic part to build the signature riff? I can see how that would be effective and you will still get something unique.

Mix is perfect, sounds great though the studio headphones.

If all country music sounded like this I would listen to more of it smile

This has that smooth cohesive George Strait chart topping feel to it. Enjoyed my listen.
Posted By: Janice & Bud Re: Montana Sunsets - 06/02/18 11:59 AM
Simply stated...we need more songs like this. The tune is engaging, very melodic, and with the great write/vocal/[production it's a showcase for both floyd and the User Forum.

We will resist to temptation to compare it to any particular artist or time period. For us it is timeless Americana. We grow weary of hearing that good music only comes from certain pigeon wholes...mostly in the past.

"At some point everyone needs to make a choice...
The best you can do is be happy with what you've got. "

Well, that will be floating around the head for a while.

The signature lick works really well. This production is a great example for anybody who doubts the power of BiaB in talented hands.

Great write, smooth vocal, solid production.

It sounds effortless, and shows off the nylon string guitar to boot.

Ticked all the right boxes for me. Didn't fire up my inner critic about anything.

Well, I was going mention the inherent chauvinism about "get my slippers", and ask what century the singer was born it... Then it dawned on the that was the point! laugh

Hello Floyd. It appears American has a new standard. everything is just perfect. When I was teenager back in the 60s, my brother and I often laid in our respective twin beds and talked about Wyoming in the same way you relate to Montana in this song.

Well, in 1966 I drove from Cheyenne to Salt lake City on Interstate 80 in '57 Chevy convertible. At least I got to see the danged place!

What a great song and fabulous listen. This is music, regardless of genre at its best.

Really good song. Nice production chops.... crystal like it needs to be.

The look at the choices we make, determining where we end up in life is excellent. Too many people have dreams that they never follow for one reason or another. Yep... an introspective on life's choices.

floyd,

I'm s-o-o-o-o-o far behind in commenting on your songs that I'm ashamed to show up in one of your threads. It's because of this that I'm throwing date sequence to the wind and just jumping in while this song is still on the first page!

"Montana Sunsets" is a really wonderful listen... I absolutely LOVE that last line of the chorus. It pulls the chorus lyrics together and stitches them up with a heap of visual imagery and energy. In addition, there's a ton of movement in it. When I first heard "hit the range and ride" at the end of the first chorus, I stopped the track and rewound it so that I could play the chorus again. It was like I was standing in one of those old-time westerns that my dad used to thoroughly enjoy and the hero rides off into the setting sun. In so few words, you managed to convey a truckload of sight, sound and (e)motion... that's 'skill' by anyone's definition! (It came as no surprise that you'd have John Wayne in there somewhere in the song smile )

That final twist on "hit the range and ride" as a way of saying "goodnight" made me smile. It was a very satisfying pay-off. I also agree with Biglad, the sequence of lyrics that had "eagle screams" resonated big-time!

I'm glad you mentioned the nylon guitar. #2201 is one of my favourites. Brent's playing is magnificent (as always) and this Realtrack has a really warm and captivating sound.

Jumping off on a tangent... What did you do with your vocals? They sound spectacular. Incredibly clear and massaged into the mix with pizzazz. Is that a slapback delay that you have happening? I thought I could hear it at times but then I might be imagining it because I've been playing around with delay quite a lot since I posted this article and this other article and I might be hearing things that aren't there. (Kind of like Tartini tones where a note that is not actually present is psychoacoustically created by the brain as the difference in frequencies between two played notes... a strange phenomenon!)

This is SUCH an inspiring creation! ... off to listen again...

Seriously... wonderful melody, first class singing, terrific arrangement and production... music doesn't get better than this.

All the best,
Noel

Noel - I always enjoy reading what you have to say - and you are welcome ANY time = early or late... smile

The vocal processing is similar to my "usual" vocal chain - EQ, Compressor, Analog Delay, Room Reverb. I mixed in a bit more of the Reverb than I usually do - and I think that accentuated the delay a little. I also think that it might be that the combination of instruments made the vocal "more effective"... kind of one of those times when everything seems to get in the right slot and a little "extra" happens. Elusive.

Thanks for such a great review...

Your songs are a moving target and I love that. You manage to set a certain expectation and simultaneously bring something fresh to it every time.

I am hearing some new influences in the music that seems to reflect your travels both physically and musically...again, while maintaining "you." That can be hard to do. At least, I tend to feel so.

I also have liked your increased use of internal rhyme. Whenever I hear that, I can't help but respect the writer. To end on a rhyme is one thing. To phrase things in a way to create and internal chime for your ear is crazy awesome in my book.

I could go on, and I believe you know that. "Just loved the song" is probably all that really needed to be said. smile
