A "Bookends" kind of song, with more of a pop feel than I usually try for.

Embers

she puts her knitting down
hums along to Unforgettable
says to herself
at least someone understands
he turns a page of Hemingway
these days books are his best friends
they sit apart on furniture
wrinkled as their hands

its not yet cold
he doesn`t need to be told
time to light the fire
alone together all their treasures
live in the embers

at six oclock they`ll walk the dog
she complains about the weather
he knows to handle her gently
as their silk antiquities
still each night in flickers bright
the mystery of the glow
memories that bind
their peculiarities

its not yet cold
he doesn`t need to be told
time to light the fire
alone together all their treasures
live in the embers

dancing in the flames
better thoughts summer nights children`s games
its the best they can do

its not yet cold
he doesn`t need to be told
time to light the fire
alone together all their treasures
live in the embers

Beautiful song Robert, well produced my friend, well written and the vocal hits the spot. Cliff

It is a beautiful write. I thought the vocal might have been too up front, in parts. Maybe if brought down just a touch it would work fine, That being said, I really enjoyed the song. Lovely lyric and nice melody.

Well done.

Robert,

These lyrics were an incredibly visual journey for me. It was so easy to see everything that you sang about. My first impression was that there's a lot confidence on display in this creation, its arrangement and its production. You certainly are achieving some pretty polished results working with your DAW and BIAB these days.

As always, your storytelling stood proudly at centre stage.

All the best,
Noel

A lovely poetic set of lyrics and a thoughtful backing and a strong vocal performance.
Very nice indeed.

Nice one, Robert! As always I enjoy your lyrics and the images that they evoke.

Very good, enjoyed the listen!

What a beautiful and haunting song. Your vocals here and absolutely piercing, and the feel of the whole thing is almost ghostly. Some really incredible lyrics in this too, which pull the whole thing along, to me at least.

You should be proud of this one smile Thanks for sharing!

Robert,

An excellent write. You captured "growing old together" magnificently. A beautifully painted picture.

The production and mix are good, however, I did not care for the choice of drums. I thought they were "too jaunty" for the thoughtful lyric.

Floyd,
Supportive and astute comments as always...there`s a long story about that drum track, but it amounts to- I agree its a poor fit!
Replaced with something more appropriate now.
Thank you,

Robert

Your lyrics and style always make me wonder, Then I realize where you are, and why your writing this way.

And that's why I followed the artists of my youth, Steve Harley, John Lennon, David bowie and the eagles and Paul macca etc,.

Thank you for that.

Dave,

Thanks for that... vocal levels fine tuning is something I often revisit after giving my mixing brain a rest for a while, so will have another listen in a few days.

The lyrics really paint a vivid picture. Bit haunting vocals and arrangement give this song another level of 'growing old' feeling.

Such a beautiful song!
We like the chorus very much.
Brent is doing a wonderful job again and the viola is beautiful.

Robert, you painted a lovely picture with your lyrics in this! The song just flows so nicely! I really liked the way you gently bring in the strings and the bring them up louder shortly thereafter! Great job! Thanks, Torrey

Deryk,
Well this started with a very personal observation about my own life... which I tried to make more universal in the song story. I`m happy you liked the result.

Looks like there`s some link in our musical influences ( have to admit Steve Harley made me go to Google though!)... I did think there`s a bit of McCartney in in the chorus on this one.
Thanks for your comments.

Thanks Scott... I`m starting to think my folk songs are just a way to recover from our rock outings!

Really wonderful writing!! I think the music is a great fit...somber, sparse, sad. I'm reminded of the lyric:

My father sits at night with no lights on
His cigarette glows in the dar
The living room is still
I walk by, no remark

I tiptoe past the master bedroom where
My mother reads her magazines
I hear her call "sweet dreams"
But I forget how to dream

Do you know that one Robert? Your song paints that kind of clear picture of a relationship, although in yours there is more resignation instead of isolation. Fine writing!! Take care. Greg

Hello, Robert

Very nice folk ballad!
The melody is so beautiful.
And it's very pop.
Your vocal just fits this.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Close your eyes and the story unfolds in your mind. Your song made me think of some dear old friends he's 85 and she's 83. He says he is catching up on his reading and she is cooking like a maniac crazy
I am eating her Bara Brith as I write this.
Your song and her cake go well together cool

Nice.

Shigeki,

Good to hear you liked this- and especially that you mention the melody... it took some work as its a bit different from my usual style.

As floyd said "A beautifully painted picture..."

The rich imagery surrounds a wonderful story of aging. Uplifting... and sad.

Your vocal, your choice of "band" and the production ice the lyric cake.

Well done Robert!
