Tempo 90

[edit: apparently the song is in Ab, but I can't be sure so I'll leave that blank. ;-)]

Song is saved with Volume, Pan, Reverb, Chorus, Bank0,
Soloist is saved with the song : Fusion Swing 16ths (249)
Style is BHANGRA1.STY (Bhangra 1 - Pop Dance from India)
Style MIDI Instruments are : 34/1 Finger Slap Bass, GM2 Bank 1, Shamisen (107), 26/2 Mandolin, GM2 Bank 2, Pizzicato Strings (46),
MIDI Drums :1 Standard Drum Kit (1)

RealDrums will be substituted :RockSwing16^10-a,b:Snare, Ride

*******************

Another in a long line of cultural misappropriations. Taken from the Bhangra style. The style A/B parts, structuring in BIAB and editing in DAW produced most of the dynamics of the piece. I worked mostly to keep it subtle.

I added a couple of Acid Loops. The "soloist" mentioned in the song notes was simply one of two "scales" produced by BIAB under that function.

Standard EQ (HPF on all but bass and drums), no track compression, mastered with a mid-range boost and stereo widening. Some FX on the loops.

I hope you enjoy, and I'd like to hear what your ears think of these midi tracks. Sound good? Feel free to dance this time. Don't know why a Minor Key can still produce some bitter-sweet happiness...that's what called up the Blue in the title.

Hey Tangmo, this may just be my eyesight may be going bad, but I don't see any link :-(

Yep, linkless but lots of info.

Interesting track, lots going on. What did you use to render the midi?

Sounds good on our monitors. It's interesting throughout and quite nuanced.
A bit of a rhythmic mashup.

Like Dave said, "lot's going on."

Midi sounds good to me. I really liked that bass.

Really well done! It is definitely a dense tune, but that isn't necessary a bad thing. The percussion is really busy, but I find it pulls the chord progressions along nicely. And despite the density of this track, it does flow particularly well.

Nice work on this one Tangmo - thanks for sharing smile

Some very cool sounds in this song. Interesting chord progressions. Well done

Being a bit of a culture vulture myself ( spent a ton of time trying to create authentic Thai/western fusion sounds) I enjoy the idea that sent you in this direction... it works to create that bhangra beat!
Perhaps mixing real instruments with midi tracks would make for a better over all sound ( not sure if there are any that fit this style in BiaB).

Sorry about the link. It's there now, and thanks DAVE!!

Dave, I am pretty sure I used the stock GM2 sounds. I haven't figured out yet how to route midi through anything. It's always a learn as I go thing with me, and that wasn't in the lesson plan for this one. :-)

Robertkc, I'm immersed in Thai/Western fusion. Western out of one Loudspeaker, and Thai out of another. LOL. Some of it is outstanding and some of it is butt-awful. But there are tons of live musicians in Thailand. God bless 'em. I'd love to hear what you've done.

Hi Tangmo,

Great musical idea with a nice chord progression! That is the most important thing.

I think it could be even better if you replaced a few of the midi instruments with better sounding (sampled) virtual instruments.
I was struggling with this as well in the beginning, but it is not too difficult to do.

That's really cool to know you have a Thai/Western mash-up going on with this song. I think the name was a really interesting pick, too. Thanks for taking the time to share!

Took some suggestions and found a style in BIAB that worked well. So I rendered more tracks (more tracks, please) and remixed the piece, raising the track count to 13. It is no less subtle, I think, but less "western" and more "south asian". Perhaps the introduction of real-instrument loops will help the poor midi. One way or another I'll get it done, because I might just sing on this one day.

That's a "private" link, so let me know if you can't get there from here.

Tangmo,

An interesting listen. The new rendering is nice - a lot more "depth" to the sound...

Tangmo,
That`s sounding better! Bass & strings really move this into the gotta move zone.
I can hear vocals ( definitely not mine!) so will look forward to what you come up with.

That`s funny - those trad. Thai instruments sure live in another world tuning wise.
The only thing with Thai/western flavour I managed to complete is here

a kind of Paul Simon goes to Asia tune.

Thanks, guys. I still hear things that need to happen, but at this point it'll be taking a few things out. Happy with the tracks, but the "edit" could be tighter.

Robert, that was a great song. Never took the train north, but it's got to beat a car. Poking around on soundloud under #thailand and found this. Thai old skool, to be sure.

Sounds pretty cool mate, but I'd love to hear the cymbals panned a little wider. They seem wider in the updated mix, (I think you have levels better adjusted in that one as well), but I'm used to getting most of my stereo image clues from percussion.
Posted By: Tangmo Re: Mild Blue Curry. - 10/06/18 04:35 PM
You're right, Rayc. It in my notes, and shall be done. This I vow.

Great musical idea with a nice chord progression!

This sums it up for me, if you need any help routing Midi etc, just ask that's what I've been doing Mario is probably fed up with me l.o.l.

Enjoyed the variety of sounds thanks
