This is a leftover from the Xtra Styles contest. I never posted it for that, but Eastside Eddie asked me why I never put this on the forum so I'm doing it now.

https://soundcloud.com/david-snyder-gigs2/listen-to-the-rain

What I did was to take the basic chord progression from Bach Prelude I in C (Well-Tempered Clavier) and use it for a song. So there is a chorus I and chorus II, not a typical song structure. (This is close to the progression Gounod used for his version of Ave Maria.)

Hope you like it.

Listen to the Rain

By David Snyder

V1

Everything I see around us
Is a wide and wonderful world
There’s a universe of imagination
Inside of us girl
A little bit above the earth
And this kingdom on the ground
There’s a hidden door to happiness
That few have ever found
So stay in bed with me
And sail away
Hold my hand
‘Cause it’s time to pray
Turn off the lights
And close the blinds
It’s time to chase the rainbows
In the corners of our minds

CH

And just love one another
While we listen to the rain
Just love one another
While we listen to the rain
Since the dawning of the universe
The best things never change
So let’s just love one another
and listen to the rain

V2

Everything I see around us
Is what was meant to be
For love is all there really is
And it’s all we ever need
A little bit behind the sky
Above this kingdom on the ground
You can see that we are only made
Of the righteousness of sound
So close your eyes
And hold my hand
In just a moment
You will see
That from the beginning
We were always free

CH 2 (Ending)

So close your eyes my love
And listen to the rain
Let’s just love one another
and listen to the rain
Let’s just hold one another
Love one another
And listen to the rain

It reminded me a lot of Procol Harum, but I guess that is natural since you both are using Bach as inspiration.

I enjoyed listening to this!

Everything everyone else mentioned - great use of the progession, sweet lyric and a melody that carries it very well.
The ONLY nit is that the vocal is essing quite a bit as well as some initial sounds.
I reckon a de-esser and a fast attack compressor would see those sorted.
I get a strong, and welcome Randy Newman feel on this.
Good stuff, well done.

David,

This is a great chord progression and you've used it really well.

The lyrics are choc-a-bloc full of imagery! I'm not sure what it means, but I love the phrase "righteousness of sound"! As I've said before, you are definitely one of the most inventive and creative people on this forum.

All the best,
Noel

Man, very cool chord progression! And interesting how you came up with it in the first place.

Great write as always, like Noel I also really like the "righteousness of sound" phrase.

Something a little different, and that's a good thing!

Hi, David !:))

One of your absolute
best without no doubt !
I may even have to go
and love my Lady while
listening to the rain
(though, there+s no rain
over here for the moment
but it will, come, be sure
of that) !

Beautiful tune !!!!

Cheers

David,

For a song based on progressions hundreds of years old, this is supremely original.

The lyric is superb. Engaging.

The backing does a nice job of allowing the vocal to shine.

I just listened to this 4 times. THAT says it all.

Nice work David smile Floyd nailed it in his last comment - you managed to make this entirely your own, and I'd have never though it was based around a piece by Bach. Your vocals are top notch too, and the lyrics add a whole other dynamic.

You should be proud of this one - thanks for sharing!

You skipped the light fandango on this one David.

What a write, What a talent really enjoyed this one.

Wow, we love this David. For us the lyric evoked a spiritual feel -- of the type that transcends labels.

Well done all the way around and we enjoyed the backstory on the progression, etc.

Very nice!

Pretty song!! Nice vibe and some really nice lyrics! I found a few of the changes quite unusual but wouldn't say they don't work. Very cool! Very creative! You are a whirlwind of creativity my friend!! Take care. Greg

David,

Spiritual balm. Wonderful lyrics and a heartfelt vocal.
Very creative use of that progression and the Rainin style.
I think the Old Wig (Bach) would enjoy this too!

Thanks Noel.

What I meant about the "righteous of sound" is a reference to quantum mechanics.

From Quora:

"Don Lincoln, a senior experimental particle physicist at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory and an adjunct professor at the University of Notre Dame; and whose writings I have picked apart to understand this for myself, writes: “Everything—and I mean everything—is just a consequence of many infinitely-large fields vibrating. The entire universe is made of fields playing a vast, subatomic symphony. Physicists are trying to understand the melody.”

We are made out of sound dude.

Sing on.

Righteous.

Ahh... yes. The quantum world is an amazing place. As I understand it, atoms and molecules only stop vibrating (in theory at least) at absolute zero. And that, also in theory, is unattainable --- it's one of nature's limitations.

Thanks for clarifying the phrase. I still love it!

All the best,
Noel

David,

Really pretty lyrics here, and the production brings out every note of feeling. Some really nice subtle chord changes I’m hearing in this one—really nice touch. I’m with Eastside Eddie—not sure why you would have hesitated to post this tune. Great listen.

Best regards,

Deej

Whoah Janice and Bud!

You gave me goosebumps!

That may be one of the nicest things anybody has said about a song I wrote.

That is exactly what I was aiming for. Transcendence.

Thank you so much!

David,

Very beautiful song!
I agree with Noel.
This is a great chord progression and you've used it really well.
Regardless of fairly complicated chord progression, there is no place where the melody is failing.
It is wonderful.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Hi David,

Missed this one somewhere along the way - getting old is the pits! Glad i found it, though.

To me it has an early 70's vibe. I was waiting for the B3 to kick in! But it sounded terrific without it. Creativity must be your middle name! Cool song - really liked! Best to you,

Alan
