What We Lost
© 2019 Kenny Leverett
It’s not like her to get off track
Knows what she wants front to back
It’s not like her to explain
And you can’t tell if she’s hiding pain
Well I can drink and I can laugh
I can sit here with my friends
And tell stories from the past
In this bar I feel safe
Out in the world I’ve lost my place
My friend Dave, he’s a lot like me
Says he can’t imagine anyplace
That he’d rather be
Buys a round to lift us up
One more drink
Will it be enough
What we had and what we lost
Is it a part of growing up
To have to pay this cost
Found I’m no good at reading minds
The Rubicon crossed
And we ran out of time
Is it a part of growing up
To finally see what we had
And what we lost
Well I can stand and I can walk
I can act like none of this
Bothers me at all
When I’m numb
I feel safe
In this glass
Is my hiding place
What we had and what we lost
Is it a part of growing up
To have to pay this cost
Found I’m no good at reading minds
The Rubicon crossed
And we ran out of time
Is it a part of growing up
To finally see what we had
And what we lost

Man, do you ever have a way of taking a common theme and making it yours...and we are all the better for that.
This drips sadness but it is not overwrought or overly angst ridden - just that perfect melancholy sweet spot that so many writers fail to hit.
Your vocal delivers the above in spades and Janice was singing harmony as we listened. Always a good sign that she loves a song
The arrangement and production are up to your always high bar and the mandola was an excellent addition.
Kudos Mr Leverett

Another good sad song...
Very well written & produced...
I always like your vocals...
And they give this song a sincere heart-felt expression...
Thank you for writing & sharing your soul!
Great lyrics and vocals as per usual!
Always a pleasure to listen to your music.
Hey there 44kfl, I really enjoyed the overall tone of this. Excellent mixdown on all of this and I like the key signature. Thoroughly enjoyed the fiddle to blend everything nicely. Genuine lyrics too!
Enjoyed this a lot. Superb lyrics - Yo are right on the money with the Chorus. How true.
Cheers

Kenny,
I'll borrow a phrase from Greg Johnson - WOWWOWWOWWOWWOWWOW!!!
THIS is a GORGEOUS write! Every line, every word. If I quoted my favorites it would be the entire song.
The production is perfect. Just the right elements to support the lyric without ever getting in the way. Your vocal is icing on the cake.
I hesitate to compare this to "known" artists - because it is SO good - and Kenny Leverett deserves ALL the kudos. That being said... this has an Isbell vibe and is every bit as good as an Isbell classic and I would not bat an eye seeing it on an Isbell release...In fact, it would be a highlight. Of ANY record.
This is AS GOOD AS IT GETS. Period.

This is one of the best things I've heard on here in a long while.
I was immersed and lost in the lyrics from the first line and it's the sort of
message which stays with you long after the song has finished.
The backing is wonderfully understated and serves to highlight what must be one
of the most soulful vocal deliveries I've heard.
Beautifully done, Kenny. I need to listen again.
Hi, Kenny !:))
As I am not as eloquent
as many of those praising
you above I just wanted to
say that I think this is
superb and absolutely one
of your very best !:))
Cheers
Dani
Kenny, You have posted many great songs here but this is IMO your best. The writing and delivery are outstanding. A nice grassicana production and a fine mix. Excellent work. Now you're the man! Tom

Hard to follow some of those spectacular and deserved reviews.
A beautiful song, wonderfully presented, great overall sound, and some superb lyrics.
A classic.

All has been said and all that has been said, is spot on, this is a great write. Vocals/Lyrics and your choice of tracks, fit like the proverbial glove.

is it summer yet there? we're getting another wave of snow
Great lyrics and vocals as per usual!
Always a pleasure to listen to your music.
Thanks my friend Dave
(you're a lot like me)
Well done! You have such a good vocal for this style of music. It sounds very professional done - you are a good song writer and a good producer!
What's not to like? Amazing stuff!

I agree with Will - What's not to like? It's got that raw, open wound quality. Love it.

Not yet...
But it sounds like we must be closer than you guys are
Nice work. Quite a good job on this .... from the writing to the delivery, to the choice of instruments.
I could hear this playing at the end of one of the Walking Dead episodes. ( <<<< A very high compliment BTW )
Love the reflection on life looking back. I'm sure many can relate. A time of questions and self examination or avoiding the issue, matter of fact. What happened, could it have been different. Would I do it differently if I could go back. On a different note, I love David Bowie's reflection, growing old is this incredible experience of becoming the person you always should have been. Nice song.
Your vocal conveys the emotion of the lyrics without being overwrought. My fave lyric is "Well I can drink and I can laugh/I can sit here with my friends/And tell stories from the past." Nice!

That key signature would G, a good key for me.

Wow, what can I say
I'm so honored and humbled
I think that it may be too much like Mr. Isbell but there's no conscious effort to copy
his style. It's kinda what the muse gives me and how I hear the phrasing.
I am so appreciative of your support here, I'd probably have given up
posting if not for you.
Thank you for your kind words.
Beautiful song Kenny. Nice changeup from your previous songs. Very cool to see the different textures to your vocals. Lovely lyric and backtrack. Well done..
