Goodbye Song

This is a song to which Di and I wrote the lyric last summer, just before she became so sick. I just found the time to put it to music and record it yesterday. Let me know what you think. I dropped the vocal back a wee bit in the mix since posting the song.

I've been pretty scarce on the forum the past few month due to Di's illness and some health issues that popped up for me recently. I'm scheduled for eye surgery at the end of the month. I will visit the great artists on these boards as I can. And thanks to everyone who commented on my last post. I simply didn't have time to reply to everyone who left a comment. But, I'll persevere as i can. Thanks! Best to everyone ...

Goodbye Song
(c) 2019 Alan D. David, BMI / Diana Randall, BMI

(v1)
The journey was good, I'll never forget
The memories we etched in our hearts
We traveled near and we traveled far
Sometimes to unkown parts

Then we came to a fork in the road
And the truth stared us square in the face
You chose left and I chose right
Each seeking a different place

CHORUS
We tried our best but somewhere it went wrong
Your ping didn’t like my pong
Your ying and my yang just couldn’t get along
Now we're singing our goodbye song

INSTRUMENTAL VERSE

CHORUS
We tried our best but somewhere it went wrong
Your ping didn’t like my pong
Your ying and my yang just couldn’t get along
Now we're singing our goodbye song

(v2)
We came to fences that we couldn’t mend
So we jumped them and went our own ways
I'm still not sure where it all went wrong
I'm confused as I sort through the haze

You were a Pepsi and I was a Coke
Somehow we both lost our fizz
No hard feelings no axes to grind
As they say it is what it is

REPEAT CHORUS x2

Alan...

"You were a Pepsi and I was a Coke
Somehow we both lost our fizz
No hard feelings no axes to grind
As they say it is what it is"

A clever verse! Fun.

The swing treatment was a nice way to put this one across.
Always like a toe-tapping break-up song smile

The vocals do get a bit "hot" in the chorus. Shouldn't take much to tame that...

Best to both you and Di...

What a great song Al, super swinging toe tapper. Very enjoyable
Posted By: Al-David Re: Goodbye Song - 03/18/19 11:22 AM
Hi Floyd ...

Thanks for the nice comments. Much appreciated. Glad ya liked that verse as it was the very last thing we wrote. We contemplated a last verse to give the story some resolve and this is where we ended up. Glad it works.

I went back and remixed the vocal. I brought it down a touch - a touch and a half in the choruses - and trimmed a very small amount of high EQ. I also compressed it slightly differently. Thanks for the insight. Wishing you well ...

Hi Donna ...

Glad you enjoyed that. It just came to us out of the clear blue. We'd written the rest of the lyric several days prior but were never happy with the last verse. We needed more resolve and low and behold ....!

Thank you! Wishing you the best ...

Love it and the temperament is perfect for a country swing thing.
Also I could see this exact same backing but with brass and done as a Louis Prima type tune too. Great work.

Hello Mr. Jones ... nice "meeting" you! Thank you for the very nice words. I appreciate them very much.

And Louis Prima is an excellent reference. I always enjoyed him. Yes, I'm old enough to remember seeing him perform (I'll be 72 next Friday). And Keely Smith always seemed so undisturbed by his antics. She was pretty good herself, you know!

Many thanks for the visit and nice words. Best to you ...

Indeed, a great part of their show depended on her lack of movement and stern face in contrast to his clowning around... And what a singer she was too yes.

So, an amicable break-up is a real thing?

So good to hear from you, hope your eye surgery goes well.

I miss your presence here but I certainly understand.

This is a clever and entertaining song, solid delivery.

enjoyed,

Thank you so much, Jim! I love that country 4/4 swing - played it for about 50 years. I appreciate the kindness. Wishing you the very best ...

Hey Kenny ...

Well, it's a real thing in this song!!!

Thanks for the surgery well-wishes. They're gonna pop my eyeball out of the socket and cut into. Sounds delightful, eh??!! My background is visual health, so I know what's going on, both with my eye and how they hope to fix the problem.

Glad you liked the song. Thanks so much for letting me know. Best to you ...

"Your ying and my yang just couldn’t get along
Now we're singing our goodbye song"

That's worth the price of admission...cool!

And it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that swing...

Friendly breakups are rare...nice to hear a tune addressing that smile

Well performed, well written and, yeah, that swing thing!

Most enjoyable....

Nice upbeat breakup song and uses that nice gypsy fiddle, just like my latest showcase song smile You surely haven't lost your fizz when it comes to music, great groove and nice images in the lyrics.

Alan,
A very nice story telling tune!
This was extra cool line:
"Your ying and my yang just couldn’t get along" smile
I like Gypsy fiddle on this, brings that vintage saloon feel.

Thank you for sharing!

In addition to the Coke and fizz lyric already mentioned, I also like "Your ping didn’t like my pong." Fun song. That squawky fiddle adds to the flavor.

Hi!

Thank you so much for the kind words of support and encouragement. The lyric was finished in August or September of last year. Then Di's health plummeted and I never got back to it for the music. The last few days have been better for her, health-wise, and me time-wise. SO, I've been taking advantage of that and working on several songs, this being the first I "finished". It only took 20 or 30 minutes to come up with the music, and then about an hour to bring it ti fruition. Got a couple more I'm tinkering with.

Again, many thanks for the kindness. Glad you enjoyed that particular part of the lyric as it's my favorite.

Wishing both of you the very best. T^ake care ...

Hi Janne ...

Thank you so much for those very nice comments! I've always loved Gypsy Fiddle. When I was a child, we had a family friend who was 100% Appache (American Indian tribe). He played Gypsy swing - many years ahead of his time here in the States. I can still hear him playing in my mind. I was hooked early!

Your song is really nice! You always have great arrangements and production.

Wishing you the best ...

Hi Tom ...

Thank you so much! When I started putting the noise to this one, it all just fell into place ...less than an hour from the time I started contemplating the music until I was ready to record it. As far as the vocal, this one felt pretty. I'm usually not to excited about my vocals, but this one sounded pretty good, I thought.

Again, many thanks.

Hi Alan.

Well that took me by surprise.

I was expecting something slow and heart-rending in a minor key, but what a delightful
backing to put those lyrics to. A very clever piece of writing and an excellent song.

All the best to you and Di, my friend - you're in our thoughts. Make sure you keep us all
up to speed when you can and hope to see you back on here soon.

Cheers, ROG.

Hi ROG ..

Well, surprises can be good! Glad this was a good one for you. I didn't want a sappy, boo-hoo dirge. The idea was to suggest "we tried, it worked a while but it eventually didn't work anymore. So let's say goodbye in a friendly tone and go our own ways". I think it worked it this time.

Glad you enjoyed it. Many thanks for the nice words and the well wishes for Di. I'm having major eye surgery next Friday. They're gonna pop it from the eye socket, go in from the back, make a few repairs and out it all back together and pop it back into place. Soumnds like fun ... eh??!!

Best to you ...

This is catchy right off the start—and a head-bobber all the way through. Like the fiddle in the instrumental break and the whole gypsy jazz vibe you have going on here. Sounds great! Well done!

Hellp Dave ...

Hope all is well on your end. I'm having major eye surgery tomorrow morning. Sounds like way too much fun!

Thank you for the very nice comments. Just about everyone seems to like that verse in particular. I deliberated between the fiddle and country/honky tonk piano. The fiddle came across as a little more "spirited", so I settled on it.

Thanks again. Best to you ...

I agree with Janice & Bud's comment on it being really nice to hear songs that actually address amicable break-ups. I think a lot of people tend to remember the messy ones and often forget that lack of love isn't always the reason why people need to break up and part ways. This song addressed that really well, I feel. Really great song!

Also, as a side note, I really hope your surgery went well! Speedy recovery. I have issues with my eyes and am pretty fearful of eye surgeries in my future, so I sincerely hope the surgery went smoothly for you! All the best.

Thank you very much, Ember. I appreciate the kind words. And thanks for the well wishes for the eye surgery. We've had to postpone the surgery until mid April as I have to drive from Alabama to Branson, Missouri nest week for business. It was an unexpected trip.

We initially thought I had a partial retinal tear or detachment. But, we discovered it was an internal hemorrhage of the choroid layer. My background is visual health so I have a pretty good understanding of the procedure they will be performing. The procedure sounds pretty gruesome (although it's not as gruesome as it sounds) so I won't describe it to you. It shouldn't be that big of a deal. Thanks again for the kind words. Hope whatever visual problems you may encounter will be minimal and easily treated.

Alan
