Laugh in the Dark

I thought I would write a song around the lyric "laugh in the dark," which I took from the old amusement park spook house ride, Laff in the Dark. This is the result of my efforts.

In addition to the Real Tracks, I added some loops and a synth calliope in the bridge.

Real Tracks (in no particular order):
RT1010 Bass, Electric, BritInvasion
RT2433 Guitar, Electric, Rhythm NewOrleansMardiGras
RT410 Guitar, Electric, Rhythm Country Cowboy
RT381 Guitar, Electric, Rhythm Syncopated Sugar
RealDrums-RockHardLA
RT2327 Koto, Synth, Rhythm NewAge
RT 1031 12 String Guitar
RT2582 Synth, Rhythm MutedMelody
RT2305 Synth, Background DanceRockTensionPad
RT2023 Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm CountryRockJohn
RC395 Guitar, Electric, Soloist Metal

I thought I knew you
Met somewhere before
I saw right through you
A hackneyed metaphor
Set me free. I wanna be free.

Oh I knew it wasn’t right
Still I loved you on a lark
You always cry in the light
And you laugh in the dark

Shattered pieces
Hanging on the wall
Tattered creases
Betraying your downfall
Set me free. I wanna be free.

Oh I knew it wasn’t right
Still I loved you on a lark
You always cry in the light
And you laugh in the dark

Crimson beads
Deadend leads
Your hunger breeds
A pocketful of needs
Nothing left to feed

Oh I knew it wasn’t right
Still I loved you on a lark
You always cry in the light
And you laugh in the dark

Powerful rock with a good lyric (You always cry in the light And you laugh in the dark).
Great production and vocals. I also liked the synth you added. Rob

An interesting melange of elements. I don't think the solo at the intro worked all that well but the otehrs seemed to fit in fine.
The bridge is really cool.
I enjoyed the whole package - well recorded/performed vocals and all.

Yeah, I like this. Good writing, nice arrangement and production, good mix, excellent vocal!

Good from start to finish. Really liked the ending, unexpected but fun.

Well done!

Nice work on this one! It really packs a punch - love the groove, your vocals and the progression. I'm getting a 90's vibe on this one. Really catchy, and an interesting source of inspiration as well.

Thanks for sharing smile

Very well put together. The BAND sound like...well...a band! who have been playing together for a while. Nice "little bits" thrown in at all the right time. A very cohesive sound. Nice use of the Metal soloist...

Good vocals, harmonies and vocal effects throughout. Sitting in the mix "just right".

A good write. (I've always like the word "hackneyed" - and have also used it... HA!)

Good music. Well done.

Thanks for sharing this Ezekiel's Storm, I found this quite a treat to listen to and the instruments are layered very nicely. Nice work!

"Your hunger breeds
A pocketful of needs"

One of many cool lines!

This is a very polished sounding production with lots of nice little bits here
and there to grab and keep your attention.

We know nothing about the type of vocal effects used for a production
like this but whatever you did sounds great and much like the late 80's - 90's.

The mix is really strong...you took those dozen or more tracks and shaped
them into a great soundstage.

Kudos!

Well its about time...
I've been waiting since May smile...
But you've finally delivered...
And you've done an outstanding job on this one...
Others have mentioned your lyrics that I found pretty cool...
So I'll just add I like the little laugh you put on the ending of your recording...
Nice touch!

Great job all around, especially liked your rhyming patterns and word choices.

Sound great - this is a well constructed song.

It doesn't have "the feels" that tug at the heartstrings, but it makes up for it with some bold choices - especially the interesting words!

An enjoyable listen. smile

Hi Scott,

I loved the listen!

When I heard the phrase "hackneyed metaphor", I knew I was in for good ride. I've never ever come across that before. And this was just the start of some really, really fresh sounding rhymes and phrases. I salute you for such inventive lyric writing!

I enjoyed listening to you sing, and the arrangement and production sounded great coming out of my speakers.

It's thumbs up from me smile

Thanks for the comment, Ray. I am going to experiment a bit with the intro. I might add the solo from between the verses.

Thanks. I used Nectar three for the vocals. However, for the bridge, I doubled the vocal track adding a bit of spacey cell phone effect.

Thanks, Jim. The end of the school year kept me too busy, but I finally got a chance to get back to my little hobby.

Very nice melodic rocker, catchy and well arranged. I got early David Bowie vibes in the melody and in your voice.

Clever lyrics which are the star of the show! Vocals and production are top tier.
Enjoyed it.

Entertaining through the end. Lots of cool little production bits. Sort of the opposite of a "tears of a clown" song, to my ears/mind. Much enjoyed.

Loved this tune. Such an excellent vocal and lyric. Excellent supporting backtrack. Well done. Guitar was excellent

Thanks, Dave. For that one measure break, I used a piano chord, edited loop of a backwards piano, muted picking, and a drum fill loop.

Cool rocker!! The band sounds really good (drums maybe could come up 1-2db). I like the vocal processing...you may push the high end a touch. Nice harmonies! Really good job on everything!! Take care. Greg

Hi Scott,

I do like 'compact' and flowing somgs, and this one does the job extremely well.

My toes started tapping immediately, great melody and I definitely like your singing. Waht a rich usage of RealTracks. Enjoyed the listen A LOT.

Cheers,

Stefan
