Waiting

I had posted a song a few weeks back. (Psalm 105) such nice detailed comments!
So... we thought it would be a good idea to let the BIAB forum hear this music before we do the official release in a few weeks.

This is song one of 4 from my daughter Jubilee Reed

Thank to all the folks that post on the BIAB site. We are learning so much here!

New version uploaded to sound cloud Nov 6. The first file was too loud and had clipping issues

Enjoy!
Marty Ricciotti

A “longing for love” song.

Jubilee wrote this song about 5 years ago as part of an “introduction to song writing” course.
It’s the first song that we recorded with the BIAB band. It took a long time to get the right sound. We started with the “resolve Steady driving country” but replaced the original drums with “brushes”. Also added a fiddle track in the middle of the song.
We started recording in November 2018. First in RealBand.

Later I found out about Cakewalk by Bandlab and we moved to it and pretty much had things finished except for the ending. Then this got put on the back burner.
Then I found out about Reaper. Really enjoyed the tutorials “how to record your band” and went whole hog in Reaper.
We recorded 3 other songs and came back to Waiting and moved it to Reaper too.
But we had gotten soooo much better at recording and mixing over the year that we deleted all the vocal and guitar tracks and did everything over!
So the first track is actually the last track recorded!

Jubilee plays fingerstyle guitar, sings lead and Harmony.
Husband Mark mixes in some harmony also.

Waiting
Jubilee Reed

Down the street she walks alone
And no one knows how far she’ll go
No one knows

Nobody here knows her name
Or from which old town she came
No one knows
And no one cares to know

She cries hello
Is anybody home?
She says goodbye to what she’s left behind
She’s only waiting for her lover to arrive
He promised he will come and be by her side

Search this town for anything
That will give her strength within
Anything
She’s been waiting all her life
She keeps her hopes up high despite the pain inside

She cries hello, is anybody home?
She says goodbye to what she’s left behind
She’s only waiting for her lover to arrive
He promised he will come and be by her side

The hours pass by
She’s never felt so alone in all her life
But she knows it won’t always be this way
When he comes to stay

She cries hello, is anybody home?
She says goodbye to what she’s left behind
She’s only waiting for her lover to arrive
She cries hello, is anybody home?
She says goodbye to what she’s left behind
She’s only waiting for her lover to arrive
He promised he will come and be by her side

Jubilee's vocals are quite beautiful, and delivered with impressive phrasing.

I really liked the build, this worked just so well.

The overdub of the vocal harmonies are really well done also.

Great mix, quality throughout. Most enjoyable.

Jubilee has a most wonderful voice. That really makes the whole song. All the instrumentation backs her real nicely. Good job and glad you are getting better on your DAW work. Looking forward to your continuous improvement!

Lovely voice and harmonies, nice lively melody and chording, elegant arrangement with good build-up and selection of instruments (fiddle missing from the list?).

Hi Jubilee and Marty ...

Jubilee penned a wonderful song and her vocal delivery is equally fantastic.

As simple as it is, I like the line "She says goodbye to what she left behind". As I said, so simplistic but yet captures an entire aura of feelings. I think most of us can reflect about leaving the known behind and setting out on an uncharted course. I realize this is reference to love ... but yet it crosses into so many arenas of our lives. And love is the one that cam disappoint, or excite, the most.

Jubilee's voice is as pretty as her song ... and as pretty as she is. That was a real treat! Thank you for posting this wonderful listen.

Wishing you and yours the best ...

Alan

You really did a nice job with this one - I love the vocals here, and it sounds tender and sincere. Very well mixed - it sounds top notch and really professional.

Thanks for sharing smile

Thanks to all for taking the time to listen and for all of the thoughtful commentaries.

And oh yes I did forget to list the Real Track Fiddle that was used. I will add it in.

We really struggled with the drum track as we went along.
I really liked the track that came with the style with all of the fills etc. but the singer song writer said "no! no! no! that's not how it should sound."

After much hunting I found the Brushes track and it fit the bill perfectly.
and if you listen carefully...the drums fade in during the last 5 seconds or so for the big finish.

Magnificent production. Jubilee has a very appealing tone in her voice and it is very expressive. Nicely done.

Really fantastic use of RealTracks, and I think it's great that you and your daughter worked together on this song. Awesome job!

Jubilee has a beautiful voice. Pretty song and arrangement. I loved it. Nobody else has mentioned this so maybe it's only a SC glitch on my end - but just in case it's not I thought you should know that there is some noticeably loud crackling that shouldn't be there on the word "home" around approx 3:58 - you might want to double check that to be sure it's not in the track. Otherwise terrific sounding track.

wow! good hear! yes there certainly is a crackle there.
Maybe my track was too hot when I sent it to sound cloud.
Looks like I have some fixing to do tonight.

And this is what I likes so much about this forum.
so much Help.
Thank you Sundance

Nice song but the voice is a little hot in spots and seems to rattle my headphones - level automation or careful compression may help with that.

Nice song. Great production and a great voice too.

Not much to nit pick on with this. Totally enjoyed it.

I found the problem with the track that some were hearing.
The volume level of the track was too loud and it became worse when uploaded and processed by sound cloud.

So I uploaded and new version which is toned down and the clipping crackle is gone (to my ears).

How did this happen????
Super Rookie mistake.

I had saved off all 4 tracks we are working on now in .wav format and the output meter was at about -6dB to -4dB.

so they are a bit quieter.

Then I made an audio CD from the .wav files. There was a button that said "Normalize all tracks"
So I said OK.

Later I ripped those songs off of the CD in .wav format and uploaded them to soundcloud.
and they are too hot!

Glad you figured it out!

You're welcome Marty, happy you sorted it out.

Most streaming sites compress heavily aiming for peaks at between -12 & -8 dBs. It it worthwhile finding out what a site runs at and mastering for them specifically to avoid such issues - something I've only recently learned.
Normalizing is rarely a good option - it's suppose to raise the loudest parts to the allowable maximum and bring everything up in proportion to that but it rarely works that simply and the way items in the mix sound can change dramatically based on the playback device, the amp and speakers.
Posting only one song at a time also helps forum members share the listening and feedback load too.

Hi Mary and Jubilee,

This sounds wonderful through my headphones right now.

Jubilee, you have a sensational voice and the way you sing is so very easy to listen to. Marty, your production and all that that includes are excellent.

The overall sound of this presentation is professional.

I thoroughly enjoyed the journey.
