Sweet Devilish Style

While perusing some new styles in Band in a Box I came across _DEVLSH.STY and thought it was sweet, so I wrote this song. I was thrilled when Blue Attitude (Dave Bell & Christiane Spruit) decided to include it in their (our) repertoire. My 1st thought was to rewrite the lyrics to accommodate Chris's beautiful voice. She insisted I sing it, and I reluctantly agreed to comply. Chris did add a wonderfully devilish piano, and you all know Dave would lay down some outstanding guitar, and he did.

Then it came time for the video. Again they figured I should do it. Well, after looking all over the Internet for some free video clips to use, I give up. Chris brilliantly suggested I use metaphor instead of sexy, devilish women. Perfect! The song is not really about women; it's about avoiding temptation.

SWEET DEVILISH STYLE
I'm sittin' still on my window sill and I'm watching you walking by.
There you go with your smooth and slow catching every passing eye.
I can see it in your eyes you're the devil in disguise as you're strollin' with that sinister smile.
I can feel it in your feet as you're burnin' down the street with such a sweet devilish style.

I'm out at night just to watch the light that you shine around this lonesome old town.
You walk in and you flash that grin that says your smile will be the loudest sound.
I can see it on each face in the whole entire place that they dream to be with you awhile.
All I know is what I know, and I know you're here to show such a sweet devilish style.

You must remember how your child inside once warned of putting good looks first.
If you don't see how that story ends, you're bound to bare your very worst. SOLO

Still peakin' (thrilled) from my window (chilled), when I spy you slowly sauntering by.
There you go with your... I don't know... What's that fire there between your eyes?
I can see it in your walk. You're a stoned, cold bitter rock, and a vile vixen. Versatile.
So I'll stay right here inside. It's the safest place to hide from such a sweet devilish style.
I said I'll stay right here inside. It's the perfect place to hide from such a sweet devilish style. Sweet. Devilish. Style.

Your comments and suggestions are SO VERY HELPFUL, and I'm so very grateful for your time
Marty (and crew!),

The first thing that struck me (after the cool opening) was how amazing the mix is. The vocals are perfectly settled into the mix (in a good "Rock way") and crystal clear.

And what a terrific vocal it is!

Then that bass goes right to the heart. Sweeeet. And, oh, that amazing guitar - great tone and playing (of course). There were times I thought the piano could have been slightly louder. I was expecting some Chris BGVs towards the end...

A good write. Much enjoyed.

(Video? ...don't see one...)

Wow, great collaboration! I'm glad you sang yourself, very strong and vivid singing. Cool blues band, great bass and piano playing, and Dave's guitar is sweet and devilish, perfectly expressing that sinister smile.

Janne
Love the inspiration found in just a style-name. smile

"There you go with your... I don't know..." Just why this outstanding line stands out in a stand of stand-out lines, I don't know. But I like it.

Sweet devilish vocals and melody. Band is strong and the mix sounds good to me. Guitar and bass are working well together. That little bass run at the end is cool.

Now if y'all can just get Dave to sing one...

Hugely enjoyed here.
Love this song, Marty. Your vocal is great - just the right amount of devil grin
The production, as expected, is first class and Dave's guitar just sings.
After a bit of a break from the forum, the first artists I listened to today were Janice and Bud, Steve Young, Tommy Adams and you.
I also submitted a song this week but I have to admit the production standards from you guys are a little intimidating.
Great work everyone.
Cheers,
Mike
Marty (& band)

Great intro.

Excellent vocal, bass (nice ending) & piano and I agree with floyd an amazing mix and sound.

Love Dave's melodic playing on this - some really nice note choices.

Wonderful work and a great collaboration.

Excellent on all levels though I've trouble with the panned bass...just my old stereo preconceptions.
great group effort.

Thanks so much, Floyd. Video... well, I haven't gotten to it yet. The vids that Chris does for Blue Attitude are so much better (and relevant to the song) than mine with just my pix and lyrics. Here's one I did my way, but BA's is not ready yet. http://martystraub.com/BabuMusic/videos/sweetdave.mp4

Thanks, Janne! Yeah, these guys are a ton of fun.

Thanks, Tangmo!! I love this line "outstanding line stands out in a stand of stand-out lines". You're outta line, man. Outstanding!
Hi Marty,

I liked your singing a lot in this very cool song! I think you sang with great pleasure, didn't you?
The leadguitar is brilliant. I agree it is better you did the singing on this one. Chris can't sing about herself ;-)
But she compensates a bit on the piano.

I liked it on soundCloud but saw I was the only one there. Didn't expect that given the quality of the song!

Hans
Hi Marty
Devilishly good. Nice idea, outstanding production, really good vocal (I was also hoping for Chris to chime in at some point) and reliably wonderful guitar work by Dave.
Regards,
Leon
Marty, way to "go with" the style and make something really fine. I liked the entire thing--esp your vocal "tricks" to give it personality. Nice lyric, great mix, all-around top-notch!
Top notch production. Great lyrics and vocals. Outstanding electric guitar. Piano is right on the money. Good use of BIAB. Good one to all.
HI Marty (those other super folks) ..

what a really fabulous song. As Floyd said ... the vocal is so dang good. The mix shines ... pro all the way. Great lyric and Dave's guitar is always smooth as warm butter. Everything fits so nicely in its place. This is a great song and delivery of it.

I also agree with the comment that the piano could have been more up front. But, as I said ... really sweet as is. Glad you found that style and went with it.

best to ... all three of you. Be safe ...

Hi Marty + team,

Well, I know by now that you're a great bass player, but now I realise
you're a great vocalist as well. What a super, powerful, confident delivery.
Very impressive!

And a great band too. Dave's excellent guitar work in all the right places and
some beautiful piano from Chris.

All wrapped-up in a great mix.

Loved it.

ROG.
Marty and band, that is the way it’s done. Great bass, guitar and piano. Good mix and production and a super vocal performance. Enjoyed throughout, Tom

Thanks so much, Mike! I'd say I'm glad you're back, but I wasn't here when last you were, so... I'm happy you're here! I thoroughly enjoyed Are We There Yet, and can't wait for more.

Thanks, Peter. That intro reminded me of Here Comes Peter Cotton Tail, and it seemed to fit the idea of the song.

Thanks, Hans. I always enjoy reading your comments here and in others' posts. Yes, it was a pleasure to sing --especially since I had no bass in hand. AND, because I wrote it, no one can say I sang it all wrong! Keep up the good word.

Thanks, Leon. I was willing to rewrite the whole tune for Chris to sing when her and Dave wanted to do it as a Blue Attitude song. I felt like Ringo wrote a song and didn't ask John or Paul to sing it --not even George.

Thanks, Tano Music. Much appreciated, Tom.
I like how the magic happens when you stumble into a new style that just speaks to you.

It's obvious that this one did the trick. I like how you used the name of the style in the song. cool.

Nice work on the bass, piano and guitar.
Trios are fun...played in a couple. A lot easier to come to agreement smile

You guys just keep on delivering some of the finest music on this forum...heck, some of the finest
compared to the blues rock playlist we listen to ALL the time on Apple Music.

Cool to see you with the lead vocal and write on this. Excellent.

Great melodic guitar...tone and chops and very nice piano also!

Did somebody mention the bass? smile Oh yeah! Nailed. And we love that even tone you
get...every note right in the pocket and cutting through the mix in the best of ways.

Fun!

J&B
I'm glad that you decided to sing this as this is right up your vocal alley. You sang the hell out of this one! Of course we all knew there would be a killer lead from Dave and Christiane's piano was icing on the cake. The mix was fantastic.

You all should be very proud of this one.

Thanks, jptjptjpt. Right? Not only is Dave a top-notch guitarist, but, man, he is good with a mixing board.

Thanks so much, ROG. Dave & Chris are really quite amazing in how they work together, and at the same time can make me feel like I was always a part of it. Never been in a band this pleasant. Who knew that long-distance bands would be the best thing ever.
Marty, Dave and Chris, your sound on this is fantastic! The mix is wonderful and your vocal is perfect for this! Chris made the right call in deferring to you for the lead vocal and that's saying something considering her great talent! Everyone involved offered up a pro performance here! Thanks, T

Thanks, Herb. You're right about it getting to me. I wrote some chords then auditioned some styles, and when it came to this one said, "Sweet, Devilish Style." Next thing I knew, the lyrics sheet was done.

WOW! Thank you so much, Bud. I share those feelings about the music you guys are doing.
Best vocal from you yet, delivery was perfect. Guitar was great. It all came together on this one. Congrats!
OK. You ain't gonna believe this !!! I wrote and recorded a song a couple of years ago to this exact track !!

Thanks, Mario. You're right. Chris's voice is way too angelic to be devilish.

C'mon, Dave. Do it, man. Chris could be the rose, and we could be the thorns surrounding her. What a contrast.

Thanks so much, Torrey!
Wowser What a cool tune. Just loved your vocal Marty. Dave’s guitar was just excellent as well. Boy do you guys and Chris crank out some awesome music. I am a fan
Fantastic!!! Very well written, and man Marty, you can deliver a vocal!!! Great guitar from Dave, and production/mix are excellent!! Take care. Greg
Thank you all!! I read and appreciate every comment. But rather than bumping it to the top when the post is lost on page 2, I'd really prefer to listen to YOUR new stuff. So this will be my last reply here, although I'll still read any further advice or comments. I composed a little ditty with this sentiment in mind --"Bump Me To The Top", on my SoundCLoud page.
Marty & all at Blue Attitude,
SweEEt vocal on a very cool lyric- some of the styles do have well chosen names.
I like the way you really got into the spirit for the vocal and all the usual wonderful Blue Attitude quality backs you up. I`m glad you were persuaded to lead out on this!
