The last waltz, stage version.
Very busy moving house I decided to enter a challenge ( another forum) to write a 3/4 song.
The opening lines are cobbled from a W.H. Auden poem.
Not sure about the ending- threw everything at it to try for the full cast chorus.I might rethink it if listeners have good suggestions.
Thanks for listening!

Waltzing At The Rainbow`s End

the play begins as an ocean
is folded and hung to dry
seven stars go squawking
like geese about the sky

ropes and rollers rumble storms
where the world falls away
with bricks of many colours
you build an arch
day after day

should the rainmaker relent
in your company I`d be honoured to pretend
waltzing at the rainbows end

climbing through a trapdoor
down the tree of your life
ransacked by ravens
dreams open to the sky

the prompter reads backwards
the hero loses his way
between maidens and villains
he wanders
all over the stage

on paper wings to ascend
start the music we`ll pretend
waltzing at the rainbows end

waltzing at the rainbows end
waltzing at the rainbows end
hold on with your eyes
the curtain descends
waltzing at the rainbows end

Cool, Robert. "Stage version." I like that. Lyrics were quite a story. Wonderful metaphors. Well sung, as always, and good use of chorus tracks.

Robert,

A nice piece. Has a light-theatrical-rock kind of feel. With lyrics that remind me of hearing one of my college roommate's record playing - King Crimson, early Genesis...

"on paper wings to ascend
start the music we`ll pretend
waltzing at the rainbows end"

Nice.

Good mix. Good vocals. The "gathering" in the end works.

Very nice album cover!

This is so, so beautiful. Your lyrics are, as most times with you, shrouded in mystery of meaning, so clear - in plain sight - and yet so elusive ... always nevertheless beautiful. The music is soothing to listen to, and it's sung sensitively, as always. The waltz has a tinge of sadness to it, which is perhaps as it should be, given the lyrics.

Don't ever stop writing and creating songs ... you write raw, real, original songs - never the "usual, rehashed stuff". They could stamp ORIGINAL on your forehead ;-) - so, howsoever that may be, please keep creating. Wonderful stuff. Thank you.

Enjoyed my listen, Robert..
Creative imagery, lovely vocals, solid use of the old 3/4--made it seem fresh, new.
Great work!

This is excellent Robert. A beautiful folk waltz.

"should the rainmaker relent

waltzing at the rainbow`s end"

Love this...

A poet borrows from a poet who borrowed from a poet. You're keeping me on my liberal arts toes, RKC! 3/4 time suits you well. I liked it from the very beginning (ocean is folded and hung up to dry). Always a pleasure to see where you're going with things and how you're 'cobbling' them together. Thanks again for another worthy piece of work! You've made me want to dig out my old DVD of the BBC's version of The Tempest, and I'll probably do just that later on tonight.

Really well done, Robert!

You are so good at painting pictures with words, quite remarkable.

Mix sounds great, and I like what you did at the end too.

Enjoyed!

Nice arrangement and wonderfully impressionist lyrics.
The melody is the slightly convoluted sort you excellent in.
Lovely stuff.

A very sensitive song, Robert!

But all your songs are beautiful and sensitive and your lyrics very well written. Sometimes a bit hard to understand for 'foreigners'.
I was only thinking what the challenge was of singing this waltz. It is beautiful for sure, but not really complicated. At the beginning of this year I made a waltz with some tempo changes in it. that have caused some problems. Don't get me wrong on this and maybe I misunderstood your lines about that challenge, because you also wrote that was another forum?

And about your ending of the song; To me the violin continues a bit too long on its own. Maybe you can let the guitar and the Jaw harp play along some last strokes to keep a somewhat filled sound.

But never mind these remarks, you just made another good song.

Hi Robert
Much enjoyed - I do love a waltz. Poetic lyrics, as per usual, that conjure strong visuals.
(Coincidentally, I also pinched a line from an Auden poem for some lyrics I wrote the other day.)

Leon

Hi Robert.
Sorry for the late comment as I thought I had already (senior moment).
Absolutely love this. It is refreshing to hear a 3/4 song.

Robert,

Pretty tune, pretty vocal. Poetic write with some killer lines, and I love that title/hook. That piano does a great job of establishing and maintaining a rhythm that really keeps the listener engaged. Very well done!

All my best,

"climbing through a trapdoor

ransacked by ravens

"hold on with your eyes"

Our favs amongst many good lines.

Firstly, I have to say that Janice was literally waltzing around the room as we listened smile
She loves a waltz.

Nice lead and harmony vocals. The band is nice. On our second listen the ending sounded fine being perhaps a bit abrupt on the first BUT that is what makes outros distinctive. I'd leave it.

You have quite the ability to draw the sweet line between abstraction and connect your own dots. Great example of that.

Enjoyed it!

Robert,
Beauty. It is always fun to get lost in your verbal labyrinth. I believe you conquered the 3/4 challenge! Vocals and phrasing is a big A+. Musically very solid. Good one!
Thank you for sharing.
