After Hours in the Big City

An alto saxophonist, guitarist, and keyboard player walk into a bar at closing time. The bartender locks the door, pulls the shades, turns off all outside lights, brings up a couple of cases of beer and the guys jam with members of the house band. This is a jam they put down just prior to getting totally drunk.

BiaB style = City Night SW16 Smooth Jazz
Tempo = 75

I deleted the guitar track
Bass = Ample Bass - YingYang
Drums = SSD5 DeLuxe 2 - Deluxe Rock 5
Piano = Presonus-XT Presence - Rhodes Ballad - I slightly modified this track
Strings = Kontakt - Cupid's Arrow
I am playing the guitar - Jay Turser Jazz Box
And via my wind controller - Swan Alto Sax and Kontakt Trumpet Master

Can I have the address of that bar.
Funny thing I'm in the middle of writing a drinking song as well.
Nicely done Mario. Plenty of light and shade.
Great composition. Rob4580

Will you slow down, man ... some of us need to catch up with you!!! :-)

SUPERB. So laid back ... just relaxed and enjoyed. All I need now is a drink by my side and I'm ready to listen to it again ... :-)

It's a privilege to hear your stuff, but do give the rest of us a fighting chance every now and then, eh? ;-) Actually, don't, of course ... I want to continue to hear you at your best.

I wish I knew the address myself! Thanx for those very nice comments.

Thanx for this superb review. I had a little time as all of us have been under quarantine for the last 2 weeks. Quarantine is over but it is so easy to compose songs with BiaB so who knows when the next one will come along.

This is an excellent track from a bar that I would very much like to know the location of. smile

Well produced and inspiring to listen too. You never disappoint, Mario!

Will, back in the days I knew a few of them but they are long gone, as my ability to stay up that late!

Thanx for the kind review.

I get the feeling you post these to show that MIDI can still be competitive with RealTracks. wink

And... you're right.

Smooth and easy listening. Everything sounds good to me!

Top notch write and performance. Everything sits right in place - Your arrangements and productions are always spot on. Enjoyed my listen.

Very nice, Mario!

Love the sax and trumpet via the wind controller. And the guitar too of course wink

Good arrangement and mix.

Enjoyed!

Smooth and easy listening underneath, and a little tipsy. But those two-horn duet lines are pretty dang boozy. Smile-inducing stuff and had me "there".

Well done, Mario.

Mix is excellent. That ample bass sounds great. Nice job on the wind controller.

A good listen.

Thanx David.

I have been working with MIDI since the early 1980's. I have more fun working in MIDI and playing my instruments then cutting and pasting audio. I'm not knocking anyone who does that its just not my thing.

I am glad that people think MIDI can be competitive to RTs. They both have there places.

Thanx for the kind review. I am still trying to learn that wind controller.

Thanx so much Floyd. A couple of years ago I won all of Ample's basses. They all sound great. I'm glad that I won them as I surely couldn't afford all of them!

You captured the mood you described perfectly. Nice arrangement. Nice mix. Nice backing band too.

Oh, man, I want a job with that house band. Great sounds. So well done, Mario. Wonderful feel and timing. Ok, let's hear the song they played AFTER they got drunk. Ya know, Motown turned out some good music with after hours jazzmen, too.

ha! Mario, I enjoyed your text setup to the song! Very clever way to sage the audience's expectations. David Cuny recently commented on one of Floyd's songs about how expectations affect how we hear a song. I agree. You can use expectations to guide the audience or to throw them a curve ball... but either way they have an impact on the listening experience.

LOVE the horns in this! Makes me want to write a song specifically so I can put horns in it.

I'm guessing the backing is BIAB and then you played all the solos? Great job! The intro story about the musicians in a bar jamming makes it easy to visualize each of the players you are acting out in this story.

Very clever. Well done my friend! I am impressed by your many and varied talents

Hi MarioD,

You are a specialist in creating a cozy atmosphere. In the description that you give us, you invite us to join the group of people that you describe and to share the pleasure of feeling surrounded by good people. Well done.

Mario,
Your introduction sketches an enticing scene... amply coloured by the band.
Bass tone is great... and then there`s the horns. You guys play better with a little fuel!

Mario,

Your narrative intro to this song really set the mood, and the music totally delivered. It captures the scene you set so well. I’m just trying to figure out who’s playing that great bass . . . the bartender?

Cool instrumental—well done!

All my best,

Deej

You got it. Anytime you want to join just let me know.

No you don't want to hear the band after they got drunk. That is the biggest problem with BiaB in that when one guy gets drunk they all get drunk!

Thanx for the very nice comments.

Pat, thanx so much for this very nice review.

Yes BiaB did all of the backing tracks and I played the rest, as indicated in my initial posting.

Thanx Robert. Those Ample basses are great, have many different playing options, but are expensive. I won all of them in a drawing, I couldn't afford to buy them.

The bass player's name is Bob Igantius Adam Bbrockall. He is the leader of the house band.

I'm glad you liked this.

We always enjoy your wind controller and guitar.

Enjoy yes ... understand what all you do no smile

My extent of midi is the occasional use of a MST so
I remain amazed at what you can do with it and
the controller.

Those horns are simply amazing. Love that guitar tone also.

Lovely song Mario. Would be cool to sitting around jamming in that bar. Well done

Mario,

The ensemble of Swan Alto Sax and Kontakt Trumpet Master played via your wind controller is very attractive.
MIDI sound is probably the best fit for this performance.
And it's been very successful.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Hello Mario,

All the instruments sound so bright. Well done!
It felt I was sitting next to the band.
I have no thoughts of pubs, bars or whatsoever, because the lockdown ruined those images.
Your song brings me to the 50's (at least to movies of that time).

I enjoyed it,
Hans

Thanx Hans. Around here the DWI laws killed most bars that employed bands. The lock down is killing the rest.

Hi, Mario, my good friend !

How nice to become drunk of the
superb music your bar combo put up !
That bar owner hadn´t needed to shut up,
with that combo, he could have had
the bar going all night and made a lot
of money !!!

Wonderfully cosy !

Cheers
