Letter To The Wind

In my early songwriting days I was in a New Country phase and tried a few writes along those pretty "woe-is-me" lines. This is the only song I kept from that batch.
Retrospecting and house cleaning seems quite popular here lately -I welcome your comments on my oldy.

Letter To The Wind

I don`t need someone to save me from lonesomeness
tonight I`m holding hands with the wind
that took her from these rooms without pause to shut the door
now this house feels unforgiven

rumours whisper through the walls
faces in the pictures look so lost
clouds chase my words and the moon across the night
all the while a voice sighs for the cost

this is my letter to the wind
you`ve lost everything
you ever touched just like me
blow the roof from this house
out past the stars or thereabouts
with all we hold and cannot heal
where angels take the pain
from things a heart cannot contain

you rustle robes of the holy
take every lost bird where it should go
if this old world ain`t flat some day please bring her back
I ask the one who knows about sorrow

this is my letter to the wind
you`ve lost everything
you ever touched just like me
blow the roof from this house
out past the stars or thereabouts
with all we hold and cannot heal
to where angels take the pain
from things a heart cannot contain
angels take the pain
from things a heart cannot contain

The lyrics for this song are really poetic. Something about them feels a bit haunting, and I think that adds to it. Thanks for sharing!

This is really, really nice, Robert. ...to the wind
you`ve lost everything you ever touched just like me
. What a great image of stuff being carried by the wind but not forever. Wonderfully hopeful, but not a bit saccharin. Carried well by your vocals and lifted well by that lovely, simple backing band.

'This is my letter to the wind' - I like that. A gentle song with some nice changes and good use of background vocals. A very pleasant listen, Robert.

Robert,

A good write. Terrific blown-by-the-wind imagery. Nice melody, too.

Very nice arrangement. Very good vocal. And BGVs. Good mix.

Does not sound "dated" in any way. Definitely a keeper...

Enjoyed the listen.

"tonight I`m holding hands with the wind" is just one great line of many.

Man, I have so much respect for your abilities as a lyricist! Just fantastic imagery.

Track sounds great, Robert, not dated to these ears.

Robert,
Poetic meditation. Hypnotizing. I let run, realized that I am on fifth song on your list :0)
Nice tune, definitely deserved to be revived. Thank you for sharing!

Very poetic - tough to do well in a song.

The intro sets up the song well. My favorite line:

if this old world ain't flat some day please bring her back

Good job on the vocals - nice emoting.

Robert,

The melody has the scent of Peter, Paul and Mary.
I miss it very much. Very nostalgic.
This work helps me to understand well that you started writing songs from these works.
The vocals fit this song as usual.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Tangmo,
I`m so glad you found the lyrics interesting... and not too sugary.
Thanks for commenting.

Leon,
Now that the Spirit Level songs take me further away from "pleasant" its a nice reminder to go back there sometimes.

Dave,
I still listen to some of the greats (Emmylou Harris, Garth etc)from that era of music
when lyrics were so well crafted; hopefully something sticks when I write.
Thank you for hearing some good things in this!

Really nice folk song. Very cool vocal and lyric. I got the Peter, Paul and Mary vibe as well. Cool when the drums came. Harmonies were perfect. Well done.

Hi Robert ...

You have such a unique and pleasant way about your music. This is so well done. everything is perfectly constructed - lyric, melody, backing tracks, vocal, mix - so tightly "assembled". Nope, not all that dated. A truly wonderful listen. Take care ...

Robert...great listen...I enjoyed it allot...loved the track and very interesting rhyme scheme...your voice had a Tom Petty vibe...real cool...thanks for posting...Dan

You have the most wonderful way of phrasing things. "take every lost bird where it should go" - I love these types of lines. It doesn't sound dated at all. You didn't list who the backup vocals are on the chorus. Whoever it is, lovely work too. Bravo! I like it.

"blow the roof from this house
out past the stars or thereabouts
with all we hold and cannot heal
where angels take the pain
from things a heart cannot contain"

Very nice!

Great lyric and we agree that it does not sound dated.

Or at least not dated for those who enjoy country music's more poetic moments...and there are more of those than many folks realize. And they occur throughout the history of the genre.

Your emotive vocal and band worked well to deliver
the lyric. The mix sounds good on the monitors.

Glad you brought it out of the shadows!

J&B

PS Have you used "ain't" in a write subsequent to this? smile smile

Hi Robertkc,

Wonderful song where the wind caresses all your lyrics. It's sweet, and well done. The doubled voice reinforces the highlights of your song. Well done.

Kindly regards

Hi Robert,

What struck me most about this fine presentation was the really ethereal quality that you've somehow managed to capture. It was such a good sound for matching the title, "Letter To The Wind". This backing was also equally awesome for the lyrics.

Really nice work!

All the best,
Noel

Misha - Thanks for forgetting to change the channel and for those nice comments!

David - I`m glad you enjoyed and liked the lyrics.

Shigeki - Thank you for those positive comments.

Scott - Thank you! I was never a Peter Paul & Mary fan, but I`m sure the influence comes through via other singers I did listen to.

Alan- Those are very kind comments - thank you!

Dan - I`m not sure I get a Tom Petty feel from this, but appreciate your listen and likes on the song.

jptjptjpt - Thank you for that -its very supportive! The harmonies are 2 of mine/ one Helicon blended.

J&B - I take your understanding of what "works" for a country ballad as gospel, so thank you for the endorsement.
Funnily enough I just recorded another "ain`t" on a song... 25 years after the first.

Your vocal is excellent as are your backing tracks and mix. But those lyrics WOW! I wish I could write like that.

This is a winner in my book!

Thank you Derochette, Noel & Mario for your very kind reviews!

Hey Robert,

I really like this. A lot. Beautiful.

This kinda reminds me a little of another song with a similar title.

Linda Ronstadt, doing Warren Zevon's Hasten Down the Wind.

Remember that?

Great job man!!

Robert,

A beautiful song with beautiful lyrics (like a poem, as Ember wrote).
I'm impressed, not to mention that tiny little tear somewhere in the corner of my left eye.
Only a few of my own songs managed to do that with me...

David-Yes, That`s a fine heartache song- thanks for your listen and comments.

Hans-A kleenex for your small tear...and many thanks for the nice review.

Fine set of lyrics that is loaded with some golden lines, such as "tonight I`m holding hands with the wind" and "rumours whisper through the walls." Melodic chorus.

Right from the start your vocal captivates, then the lyrics add imagery magic. Perfectly placed harmony. This is a beautifully good song. Very well written and produced. Kinda makes me want to go through your trash, Robert.

Ezekiel`s Storm-Thank you for listening.

Marty- I appreciate those comments... no can do on the trash search though, I got me a shredder!

Robert,

This is really beautiful... Love the haunting vocal.

"you rustle robes of the holy
take every lost bird where it should go
if this old world ain`t flat some day please bring her back
I ask the one who knows about sorrow"

Some really outstanding lyrics here.
