Back in March, Floyd put out a song (Lovers' Secrets) with a cute guitar riff, and I told him I was going to steal it. Well, I mixed it up a bit when I started it, but it was fun. I played it on my old Yamaha.

It's about a guy stealing his buddy's riff and his girl, because that's what you do in Nashville. To survive. But for some reason I just can't write love songs like Floyd. I think there may be something terribly, terribly wrong with me.

Sometimes You Have to Steal

By David Snyder

V1

My buddy had a secret chord
He played to make his girlfriend cry
Her name was Dawn
One night after a Bluebird show
I kissed her down on music row
And she said he’s your best friend, so tell me why
And I said

CH

It’s hard to make it right
Working every day, just to make it pay, trying to keep it real
And when you’re hungry living here in Nashville
Just to cut a song or even get a girl
Sometimes you have to steal
Sometimes you have to steal

V2

So I snuck into the Grammy show
Saw Taylor Swift and I said oh no
She won again
So I ran right up onto the stage
Took that award in a fit of rage
Saw the tears in her eyes and she said why
And I said, Taylor

CH

It’s hard to make it right
Working every day, just to make it pay, trying to keep it real
And when you’re hungry living here in Nashville
Just to cut a song or even get a Grammy girl
Sometimes you have to steal
Sometimes you have to steal

Bridge

And if anyone here knows what I’m saying
Just raise your hands and sing along

CH

HAHAHAHAHA!!

It's actually a steal of a steal. smile

Nice guitar stuff! And a nice build. Love the outro (has an early Springsteen vibe to it)

A good write. Clever.

Nice. Loved it!!

I'm not sure I heard a song before that was sad AND made me laugh like this did!

One thing that I couldn't pin-point until now was something about your voice. You know I love your tone; but it was more than that. I knew it was with your delivery; but still wasn't sure what. I've got it! You have a unique ability to both sing and have it almost like you're talking. It's very conversational AND melodically pleasing. I like that!

Great job (as ALWAYS) David!

David,

This is AWESOME!

Now you need to do it as a duet with Tater Totts... smile

Loved it!

Very well done David. Loved the acoustic on this. Super vocal and very creative lyric. Well done....

Great hook line (well sung) and a really nice feel to the song, David, even if you did steal Taylor's Grammy!

Leon

Hi David
I like your anguished , compelling vocals on this . Your "band" is perfect and the build in the song demonstrates your considerable production talents . I am trying to make the connection between Dawn , the riff and Taylor Swift ?
Regardless , it's a very good song David. Your songs always have refreshing variety and never disappoint.
cheers

Hello David,

Here in the Netherlands we are not used to stealing. And you have Dutch roots. So, how can you justify stealing?
Especially that award from Taylor. Did you gave it back after your song?
And is Nashville really that bad?

No, I will stop this nonsense now. You made a very nice, sensitive song. In his post Hear to Learn gave a good observation on your vocals. I can agree with him. And the style of the song is so typical you; whatever angle you choose in your songs they keep the same vibe. Wake me up with a song and I know when it is yours.

You often put humour in your lyrics, even when they are sad. Or maybe it looks that way for me, but I like that.
So, all together this is another good song you made, David.
I think you can keep that award. You earned it (at least, to my opinion...)!

Have a nice day,
Hans

Hi David,

Funny and sad at the same time, like Caaron said.

Brilliant writing in my book, and I really like your vocal.

I've said it before recently but I'll say it again, it's great having you back here posting music again smile

Hi David,

We can visualize the scenes written in your lyrics. The musical arrangement is very good as well as your very pleasant voice. It's a good composition. I appreciated.

Kindly regard

Funny and sad as it relates to the N'ville scene ... but how does that Grammy look on the mantle?

One helluva funny emotive write and vocal and, man, that guitar sparkles. Excellent mix.

Great listen!

Hello David ...

I think this is one of your very best in recent years. Strong vocal to some pretty darn good tracks. A humorous storyline yet squeezes out some truths worth considering. I got somewhat of a Dylan feel as I listened - except you don't slur your words!

Some really good stuff here!

David,

Well, I’m not sure just what was “stolen” . . . but that opening and the guitar throughout is magnetic—really resonates. I like the write a ton—very creative and fresh—and your vocal is delivered with emotion, sitting perfectly in the mix. Excellent work, David—enjoyed it!

All my best to you,

Deej

Gary,

Thanks for the good words! I am still trying to find the connection with Dawn myself, but I am sure she was in there for a reason.
