Back in the last century I wrote this song to do in Christian coffee houses when they were all the rage (70's and 80's)...BiaB has really helped me present it the way I first felt it should be in a light Folk/Gospel feel...hope you like it

https://soundclick.com/r/s7v4d1

BiaB parts:
JULY.STY july Summer Country Pop
3467 Bass
1947 Mandolin
2911 Rhythm Electric guitar
1761 Acoustic rhythm
364 Fingerpicked acoustic guitar

I added the vocals, acoustic guitar part, tambourine and claps

I like the song very much. Easy-flowing melody, strong yet poetic lyrics, and excellent backing. I particularly like your voice which, in my opinion, is well suited to this style. However, the harmonies (to my ancient ears) sounded somewhat overproduced - to the point where they lacked a certain clarity. Perhaps a bit too much reverb?
Otherwise, an excellent job. smile

Great God Almighty that's really good, Dan. The modulation elevates the spiritual emotion nicely like you're taking us ever higher on the path. Excellent vocals and a good mix (there's a buzz at the end). Well written and produced.

yea as said before , don't over do the backing as it sounds over whelming , you can use a wee bit of reverb rather than !! just saying !!

As usual you are very gracious in your comments...thanks so much...the modulations are of course for effect to lift and elevate as you say the "spiritual emotion" of the song which is what I'm trying to do with all the music I write and that is to somehow in someway produce an emotional and hopefully spiritual response and reaction...thanks again for the encouragement...Dan

Wow,
I knew that Coffee Culture had become obsessive in the western world but I didn't know it'd reached religious levels, literally.
Very nice arrangement and performances.
There's some sibilant stuff that could be addressed in the vocals - reverb tends to make sibilant stuff a little more aggressive. If you have a versatile reverb you can sort out a pass filter so the those freqs don't get touched by it.
Lyrically it's a bit Sunday School - being based in experiences that most listeners won't have had but, I suppose, they are tropes popularised way back. They are familiar, reinforced by repetition over the centuries and there's comfort for many in that.
Yes, the bvox are a little processed but i get that...reverb is supposed to help them recede but often it bolsters.

rayc...thanks for your thoughts...the vocals for this recording are about 20 years old, I pulled them off of a recording with SpctraLayers so a great deal of the reverb can't be gotten rid of (it's residual to the recording) but I went back and killed the new reverb I used and added a DeEsser to the vocals...it does help (though not sure I gave the vocals enough gain to compensate?...o well)...I really appreciate the technical advise I get here ...thanks again...Dan

Thanks beatmaster....I appreciate the thoughts and advise...I worked a bit on the vocal tracks...unfortunately i don't possess the individual vocal tracks so the vox mix is kinda locked for this song but your thoughts were constructive and helpful for me....thanks...Dan

I know that pain. When I 1st started recording I'd make the singer feel comfy by putting reverb on their voice as they tracked...little did I know that I could do that without tracking it as well. MANY, many mixes were compromised by having to deal with that tracked reverb. I know a little better now.
It may be an old vocal but it's a strong one.
There are some other ways to deal with the problem of essing. Here are some options if you've the time to filter through them...

Uplifting and enjoyable.

You did a good job of taking 20 year old well performed vocal tracks and adding them to a new mix. Not as easy as it sounds (from having attempted it several times).

Well done!

Janice and Bud...thanks for your thoughts...yeah it's a bit of work to get a good match but a lot of fun...I have tons of older material that needs a facelift anf BiaB is the perfect tool for that along with SpecraLayers 8...it's a marriage made in heaven or silicon valley at least! So glad you enjoyed the song...Dan

Hi Dan,

After I listened to your attractive song I read all the posts here.
Because I had a couple of questions too about the reverd and (missing) brightness in the vocals.
I read you retrieved the vocals from old recordings and the help Ray offered.
I could use some of that help to, since I recently discovered a recording of my vocals back in 1974!
Maybe I could fit them in some song once.

But about your song; I enjoyed the melody and how you were able to bring that song alive.
That must have been some hard labour!

All the best,
Hans

I enjoyed the listen!

Hi firesong, I think you did a good job with this. It is not an easy task to restore and re-use old recordings...especially when it comes to vocal tracks.

I enjoyed listening!

Will...thanks for listening and commenting...I use Steinberg's SpectraLayers 8 to separate the vocals from the music but artifacts from the music track that share the same frequencies as the vocals sometimes remain on the raw vocal track...I haven't mastered the software yet so I have to try to hide those artifacts with the new instrumental mix...it can be a task sometimes but it's fun to do and I love hearing the songs with a fresh take on the backing tracks with BiaB...thanks again...Dan
