So, it was raining hard the other day and I sat in the house and read me a piece of the Good Book.

When I got to Genesis 4, I saw there was guy name Jubal who invented string instruments.

Descended from Cain. Kicked out of Eden and left with the shame.

Oh yeah. Here we go.

Jubal

V1

My name is Jubal
Of an uncertain fame
I was raised in the dirt
Descended from Cain
Kicked out of Eden, and left with the blame
Covered in mud, and cursed by the rain

CH

My name is Jubal
Descended from Cain
and I can play anything
if it has a few strings
My name is Jubal
Yeah Jubal’s my name
I can play anything
if it has a few strings

V2

My name is Jubal
A child of the land
They say I’m a sinner
Just because I’m a man
God lives in a cloud, and I’m covered in shame
Though I still take the side of the sick and the lame

CH

My name is Jubal
Descended from Cain
And I came up with music
Just to deal with the pain
My name is Jubal
Yeah, Jubal’s my name
And I can play anything if it has a few strings
Yeah I can play anything if it has a few strings

Bridge

And how long will this hurt
Go on
Will I ever find my redemption
In the notes inside some song

V3

My name is Jubal
Of an uncertain fame
I was raised in the dirt
Descended from Cain
Kicked out of Eden, and left with the blame
Covered in mud, and cursed by the rain

CH

My name is Jubal
Descended from Cain
and I can play anything
if it has a few strings
My name is Jubal
and I deal with the pain
cause I can play anything
if it has a few strings
yeah I can play anything
if it has a few strings

I heard that he had a cat that disappeared about the same time he was working on his first stringed instruments.

Cool song David.
Posted By: rayc Re: Jubal - 08/12/21 05:33 AM
This reminds me of Laugh'n Lenny in a rye mood.
Not the key, tempo or delivery but the use of Hebrew and Proto Christian stories in songs to tease out ideas about the personal.

Jubal's renown as a flautist, (probably pan piper), wouldn't translate so well...
"yeah I can play anything
if it has a few holes"
Definitely doesn't have the same ring to it.

i really like it when the whole band kicks in.
very clever. also interesting lyrics.
i liked the come down dynamics in the ending.
best to you.

Yeah, like OM said, it definitely rises to new heights when the whole band kicks in, and the perfect band it was. Really cool song idea and an excellent write. Jubilation and Jubilee come to mind. Great band choice and well sung, David.

Jubal!
such a clever song. nice mix and a great sound to boot!
Posted By: Sundance Re: Jubal - 08/12/21 10:02 PM
My bro's nickname was Jubie 'cause he couldn't play nothing with or without strings but he loved to play the jukebox at a juke joint they used to frequent. I was a baby but I heard stories growing up. grin

I like the way the song builds. Cool vocal. What you're saying may sail right over my head but I nonetheless enjoy it very much.

What a great prompt for a song! I can see why you felt inspired. I feel like the myth about the satyr Marsyas challenging Apollo to a musical contest would also be a really great source of inspiration for a song. Glad you found a Muse on such a rainy day (see what I did there? The Muses? Hee hee). You did a really great job on this song, as always. Keep up the great work!

Interesting inspiration has lead to a catchy song with simple sing-a-long lyrics. I enjoyed the vocals. Great lush arrangement, really like those string instruments and the transition s from the folk start to them and then back to folk.

David,
Fun tune!
Excellent performance, arrangement and mix.

This is a cool and sticky line:
"and I can play anything
if it has a few strings"

Thank you for sharing.
Misha.

Hi David,

You keep surprising me with your original songs and their angle of view!
It is something special to get inspiration from The Book and then talk about the strings.
And I -kind of- liked that Jubal guy when you said, I quote: God lives in a cloud, and I’m covered in shame
Though I still take the side of the sick and the lame.

He's a good guy!
And I think you are mr Dylan II!

Very amusing song, David,
Hans

"I can play anything
if it has a few strings"

I believe that.

"Kicked out of Eden, and left with the blame
Covered in mud, and cursed by the rain"

Nice.

Good production - carries your vocal as needed - nothing getting in the way...

Sung with passion.

Well done.

Excellent!

As Janice said, "that might be the most unique gospel tune we've ever heard!" Bud said, "well I reckon a song based in the old testament can be a gospel song." Janice said, "Of course it can."

Most creative ... but then that certainly isn't new!

Enjoyed it.

Very cool song & production, but shouldn't you be singing "strangs" ???
btw, I change my strangs once a year, whether they need it or not...

Hi David,
I have to say you've picked an interesting and yet obscure person to write about. In my view, this is a good thing because some folks who have never heard of him may look up who he is. A great opportunity to witness. There's a good sound from the band you picked as well as your vocals. The song has a nice build to it. Poor Jubal, we all came from dirt, we've all fallen short and sinned. Thanks for posting, I enjoyed the listen.
