Lyrics:

Pop, he was hard on me, it didn't do no good
But he got me fixing cars, make em run like they should
I took all my frustration down to the local strip,
I'd wait to see that Christmas tree and then I'd let her rip

There's a feeling at the finish line when you know you won,
You won't get nowhere else, and when the day is done
You can bet the beer is good, and that trophy's sweet,
At Route 3 Drag-o-way, stock amateur meet

The smell of burning rubber strong in the air
Girls screaming for their guys, wind through their hair
When that DJ calls your name, everything feels right
Nothing like a winner in the roar of the night

Ain't no money in it, I'm racing for the kicks,
Work a couple jobs, I'm never home at six
Late nights you can find me, underneath that hood
Better Rs, a bit more torque and then I'll be real good

I ain't perfect no ways, temper there for sure,
But when I'm at the starting line, that's the perfect cure,
People in three counties, they follow me each week
That boy in the two tone Chevy, sure runs a blue streak

There's a feeling at the finish line when you know you won,
You won't get nowhere else, and when the day is done
You can bet the beer is good, and that trophy's sweet,
At Route 3 Drag-o-way, stock amateur meet

Always such excellent lyrics. So well said, TuneMonger!! You have a wonderful ability to bring out the story in such a visual way, and add the perfect instrumentation and melody to make it memorable.

Beautiful song TuneMonger! The sparse accompaniment is just what this calls for and sounds great! This is a tune a lot of folks will relate to! Thanks, Torrey

'TuneMonger'...

The title of your song suggested that I was about to listen to some kind of blistering, wailing rock number celebrating the smell of engine oil and the sound of screeching tires and the roar of the crowd with some high-octane lyrics heating up the mix.

And then, my ears got treated to a gentle ballad that recounted with impressionistic sensitivity the nostalgic, remembered pleasures of drag racing in what appears to have been a small, rural community setting. Your singing had that suspended-in-time feel that magnified a powerful sense of recollection of past events.

It's a finely-crafted and felt song in all ways.

It READS like a hot rod/car/surf song.
Plays like a reminiscence with regrets.
It does sound as is you're on the edge of an uncomfortable key but you carry it off with slightly melancholy whisper singing.
Nice.

Hi TuneMonger,

A bit unexpected that you made this ballad. Like Bluage I expected to hear 'some heavy stuff', but then there was this very sensitive, lovely song. With very nice lyrics. I still hear your voice in my head, very sensitive and just beautiful.
There is one thing though. I had the feeling the key you sing in is a bit high on some parts. And then I saw Ray wrote something similar.
On the other hand, singing in this key, however, gives the song a nice fragile character.

TM,

A well-written lyric.

Good, simple singer-songwriter backing.

Nice to hear you singing this...

Nice. Either you lived the story (which is cool) or you are very creative (which is cool too). Either way this is a winner. The band got in the mood, that's for sure.

Janice said it reminds her of Jim Croce and his vivid story telling.

Great write and your emotive vocal well delivers the lyric.

We're always impressed with AABB rhymes structures that
don't sound forced. Not easy to do.

Nice backing tracks and mix.

I (Bud) frequented drag ways in the early 60's -- thanks for the memories.

Well done!

Hi TuneMonger,
Wow, when I looked at the lyrics, I thought it was going to be like a Beach Boys/Jan and Dean song. Or maybe possibly a Jim Groce's Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy). But Noooo... You went and turned it into a longing for nostalgia and bittersweet little tune. Nice job picking the music and singing the vocals...

Thanks to everyone for your kind comments! I didn't do any drag racing when I was younger but my friends did, so I learned a little about it. Learned enough to write a song, I guess. Thanks also for going easy on me with the singing. I know I don't have much of a voice.

Missed this one somehow.

I really like this, stripped down approach works.

Excellent lyrics! And your vocal really suits the song.

Well done, enjoyed.

Dang, does this ever work so good. No over-reaching, no preaching...just a finely chiseled lyric that had me (the listener) sitting across from a diner table nursing a beer. Even that slightly cluttered last line works for me. Extra fine acoustic band and the harmonica was just right. Hugely enjoyed.

Beautiful song with a lot of heart and authenticity!!! Vocal is imperfect but perfect....captures the sensitivity and humanity in the lyric!! Band is the perfect compliment.....have to check that one out! GREAT stuff!! Take care. Greg
