This is a song about trying to find the right words, but running into misinterpretation. It's told from a lyricist point of view.

I played bass and sang.

You Can Always Say Baby

I went down to the studio and asked for Lear-Rick Jack.
They told me that he had to go, and don't expect him back.
I said, "I only need one line and Jack once said to me,
'When looking for that rhyme, I can always say baby.'" What'd he say?

CH: You can always say "baby" if you run out of rhymes,
If it's driving you crazy and you're wasting your mind.
Don't bother looking for that tag on the line. N Baby

I hurried home to write it down; I knew I might forget.
But stopped to see ol' Lucy Brown and Musk-o'-Tell her pet.
And this is what she said to me when I dropped by to call,
"If ya never gonna ring, baby, then do nothing else at all." She said...

CH: "You can always say, 'Baby, I just run out of dimes,'
cuz your lying won't phase me. I've heard all your lines.
Don't bother knockin' on my door cuz you'll find
you can sometimes say, 'Baby's just fine'."

BR: Soon I bumped into ol' Lear-Rick Jack, at McDougal's singing rounds.
I said, "I'm glad to see your back, but won't you kindly turn around?"
I asked him what the heck he meant when he said to say baby.
And his eyes went wide and his head was bent when Jack gazed back at me. SOLO

He spoke. "No. No. No. No. No. Oh, no. That's not quite what I said
Now listen to me slow, and sink this in your head:
when looking for your rhyme, you search from A to Z.
If you want to stress the time, you can always add 'baby'." Baby,

CH: You can always say baby at the end of the line
if your drummer's just lazy and he's messin' the time
Don't bother bookin' on that ragman to rhyme.
You can always say baby one time."

CH: Oh, I can always say baby when I run out of limes
cuz you're driving me crazy. I'm wastin' my mind.
Don't bother askin' cuz I'll tell ya I'm fine. N, baby. N, baby. N Baby.

You appear to be scoring at will these days, Marty.
(Did I hear you just squeeze four syllables out of "rhyme?"

Nice one Marty,
I watched the video and it sits pretty well with the song too.
It's nice to get a laugh out of the things you slave over.
Your voice n bass are in fine form...as usual.

Great job Marty! Man can you play that bass!! Nice work on the vocals! If someone is creative they can take a word and bend it into something that works for a song like you described! You're a talented fellow! Take care, Torrey

Hi Marty,

This is superb!

The sound of your "band" is excellent. It's full of warmth and character, and so easy to listen to. The arrangement, your vocals and the whole production sat really comfortable in my headphones.

The story grabbed me and held me throughout. Because of it's immense visual impact, my favourite line was...

"And his eyes went wide and his head was bent when Jack gazed back at me."

Toe-tapping fun from start to finish.

All the best,
Noel

Marty, you had me at the git go! A great toe tapper.

I got a Jimmy Buffet vibe from this one.

Everything is outstanding in this song.

Loved it!

Thanks so much for your encouraging comment, Noel. I think that's why some folks started calling him LEER, but of course he changed it to Lear.

I don't say this lightly: you are a bona fide creative genius, sir. Made me smile, made me laugh, made me listen ... there's a moral in there, too, if only I could find it ;-) Bravo!!! You light up this forum with your unique, sometimes unconventional, always brilliant - no matter what - creations.

FUN pretty much sums it up.

Well, perhaps Creative Fun would be a bit better.

It was even more enjoyable for some one like me (Bud)
who waits very long times for the song truck to appear
and dump a few on me. (metaphor from Tommyad.)

The bridge got Janice doo-wopping away smile

Great bass and vocal performances and an excellent band.

Cool vid to show it all off especially the lyric.

Fabulous!

First it had me smiling, then it had me dancing.

What can I say - it was faultless.

Loved the whole thing, but especially the vocals.

Hi Marty,

I also enjoyed listening to your song. A real story telling tune for sure, albeit an amusing one. The vocals sounded great also and the band choice was definitely right on. I enjoyed the video until the guy in the skull face popped up...Yikes!
Thanks for posting, I enjoyed the watch/listen!

Hi Marty,

A very funny story or lyrics in a entertaining song. I haven't seen it on YouTube (I will, after this post) but it has a joyfull sphere as most of your songs. I'm sure in your video that will all be underlined! Except for a skull that will appear according to Bawb in the post above mine.

I enjoyed it very much,
Hans

Hello Marty,

In adition to my previous post, I watched your video. Great! And no 'yikes' skull, but some Mexican I presume, celebrating 'el dia del muerto'.

Funny lyrics, I like how the story is built around the songwriting theme.
Catchy chorus.
Excellent vocals, so much energy and dynamic, also doowops are nice smile
Nice live feeling, although I was more concentrating on lyrics and vocals that I forgot to pay attention to the band. The bassline is cool,of course.
I would have liked to hear spoken "baby one more time" before the last chorus, maybe together with a short drum solo wink
