Evening Leave

This song has been progressing slowly, I composed most of the melody and chords in 2016, then got the lyrical inspiration in 2019 and now this year when going through unfinished projects I decided to put some effort for this and managed to complete it. Inspiration came from the name of a local bar (translated to Evening Leave here), never visited the place, because I was just a child when it existed, so this is a fully romanticized version smile

One of the slowest tempo songs I've ever made. I think also one with the least number of instruments. Special mentions go to the mallet RealDrums - nothing else sounded good for the mood I was after, and the solo guitarist which has inspiring Gary Moore vibe.

RealDrums: Mallets128Slow
RealTracks:
Electric Bass TexasBluesRock slow #1922
Acoustic Piano Solo-Acc #896
Electric guitar rhythm Popsoul held #3722
Electric guitar soloist blues slow 12-8 #2686
Strings JazzBalladPads #2963

MIDI: Kinetic Metal VSTi (using MIDI chart of acoustic piano #896)

Vocals by me

Mixed in Cakewalk by BandLab

Lyrics:

Sun sets down
and balance sheets are left behind
uncertainty of jobs
still bothers their minds
some walk alone to
find a meaning for their days
one common goal for the
tired and worn
connects their ways.

Evening Leave
an asylum free from grief
a moment worth a toast
a welcome that sanctifies
the everyday lives.

The gate is closed and
all the hustle is at rest
way too often saying
yes to all requests.
Once in a while it's fair
to make time for yourself
though after night
you could flake out
against the wardrobe shelf.

Evening Leave...

Twilight, it rains
looks back at misery
then the neon sign flickering
the crowd, their cheerful grins
takes a deep breath
right before stepping in.

Well done Janne. Those mallets are a very cool drum track. Excellent vocal and lyric. Loved the processing you did on the vocal. Backtrack was excellent

Janne,

Cool BAND! Really interesting combination of instruments. The Mallets are a "fresh" approach - haven't heard anyone use those before.

Interesting lyric and interesting melody.
The vocals on the chorus are cool. And that chorus has a nice Gilbert O'Sullivan vibe to it.

Different. Enjoyed.

You've created a nice laid back vibe and painted a lovely sound canvas with all the instruments placed/spaced perfectly in the stereo mix. Good story and one that I can relate to as we would go to the pub after work for a few quiet ones smile . Pleasantly slow and atmospheric with a good band and great production. A delightful listen.
cheers
Gary.

Janne, there is a LOT to like here.

- the melody is great and well performed by you

- great choice of BiaB tracks. The midi converted piano sounded excellent and the guitar solo was very well chosen. Cool idea with the mallets.

- The lyric reminded us of a club here that we used to gig at -- a place where the regulars were always there after work.

- and last, but not least, the mix is excellent.

Well done!

Yeah, I love this!

I'm a sucker for slow tempo bluesy type grooves.

Guitar is perfect, and those mallets sound great!

Nice one, Janne, my new favorite from you.

Thanks Scott for your positive feedback smile I agree about mallets, I'm sure there are many other nice drums in BIAB yet to be found.

Very well done.

Man, those mallets are interesting. What a cool dirge-like feel. Now that I know it's about a bar, the lyrics give a visual of patrons slowly walking to the place where the fun will begin. Excellent melody and band choice. Really like it, Janne.

As Floyd mentioned the chorus is VERY Gilbert O'Sullivan.
That's a good thing by the way...he was a master of the wistful and melancholic pop song.

Thanks fj for your encouraging comment smile Yes, mallets are fresh, I hope to hear more mallet songs... Gilbert O'Sullivan was an unknown artist to me, but now I have added him to my Spotify playlist, very nice melodic music, thanks for mentioning him, I can hear that vibe as well.

Thanks Gary, I'm very delighted to hear your generous comment smile It is always pleasure to hear that someone can relate to my story, at least in this case a pub is not an unfamiliar place for many of us laugh

Wow Janne,

I just gave a comment on Summer nevermore and now I'm listening to Evening leave.
Your singing is very different from what I know from you, but very good.
I liked that percussion (mallets) in it. Gives the song some tension while on the other hand it is slowly flowing.
A nice effect!
And as always; very nice lyrics.

Well done Janne!!

Janne,

Cool song!
It's a mysterious song that you make me think this is just a minor tune first, but unexpected chords appear one after another.
I thought it was a song that made me feel your personality.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

Thanks Peter for your kind feedback smile Glad to hear you loved the mallets, for some reason the normal realdrums sounded too dominating, but the mallets came for help.

Thanks Marty for your positive comment smile Very nice to read what kind of image the lyrics gave you, basically it's about a bar, but it can be interpreted other ways too.

Dear 'jannesan'...

Chord-by-chord, your song took me on a dark-colored musical journey that was atmospherically charged by the ethereal strings writing, and the restless, moody, siren's blues-speak of the electric guitar Real Track.

Your impressionistic lyrics were like a special effect, creating dream-like images that formed, solidified, and then dissipated like a mist in the night.

The Real Drums mallets performed at such a slow tempo provided a suspended-in-time feel that enhanced the sense of memories of the past floating to the surface of one's consciousness.

It was an intriguing listening experience.

I like where the melody takes me in the chorus.

Oh, and the instrumentation---loved it.

Very enigmatic sounding.

This line sticks out for me: "an asylum free from grief."

Thanks om for your nice comment smile I know you like vocal doubling, I usually do that for the chorus part, to make my voice sound decent - the better sounding parts hide the bad sounding parts.

Thanks Hans for your kind comment smile I haven't changed my singing much, so maybe your observation is caused by the slow tempo and longer vowels. Glad you liked the mallets.

Slow 6/8 is a bit unusual, as it the percussion.

Loved the harmony on the chorus.

Thanks Shigeki Adachi for your pleasant comment smile You are right about unexpected, I'm still not sure whether the song is a major or a minor tune, maybe that reflects also the two aspects of my personality. But I tried to smile while singing "stepping in", I hope that can be heard. Anyway, I'm glad you enjoyed your listen.

Thanks bluage for your beautifully poetic comment smile "dissipated like a mist in the night", very nice image, maybe I was after that image in the ending instrumental section. Couldn't agree more with the mallet comment, although I wouldn't have expressed it in such a nice decorative way laugh
