Hi all!
My first write for months. It seems the more I do the harder it gets.
Maybe the new BIAB version will give me inspiration for the next one.

Falling Leaves © Vic Arnold 2021

I think about you now
There are times in every day
I wonder why & how
we threw it all away?
We were the perfect pair.
Like one and thick as thieves.
High up in the air
Sailing on the breeze
Once we were the tallest trees
Now we're just ... like falling leaves
Ch.
Like falling leaves, falling leaves
Golden brown. Golden brown
Memories, old memories
Breaking down. Breaking down.

Do you think back to the day
when everything was new?
We had so much to say
and most of it was true.
Then it all went to waste.
Tore up all the rules.
Living life in haste.
Like two crazy fools.
Lost our grip and lost our way
Seemed our hearts just fell away
Ch.
Like falling leaves, falling leaves
Breaking down. Breaking down.
Memories, old memories
Golden brown. Golden brown

Oh, yeah, Vic, BiaB 2022 is quite inspiring. So much more flexibility, but I'm afraid it may even take longer to whittle down the possibilities for each new song. Now THIS new song of yours is really really good. I like the way you developed it with such good dynamics. Your vocal is always perfect. You tell the story like no other could. Excellent choice of instruments, too. Love the cello! How it falls just before the chorus as if it knew just what the song needed. The hand claps in the chorus are exactly what was needed. Nicely done.

Hi Vic. I love your passion with this wonderful tune.
I think the highwaymen could have performed this.
It has a real timeless quality, really loved it.
Great lyrics and well produced.
Funny thing is I wrote a song a while back with the same title.
Thanks for posting. Rob4580

Thanks Marty.
You're more a fan of my aging vocal than I but I appreciate the encouragement
The cello part was originally a string synth but I liked the dark sound better.

Hi Rob4580.
Thanks for that.
You surprised me with the remark about the highwaymen
but I suppose they could do most anything they set their mind to.

Very good song and vocal. There was a sense of strength in the recounting of loss. That's a good takeaway for any song. Excellent work!

Hey Vic,

This sounds really great!

I have a thought about your "workflow" issue. smile

This may just be me, but I find I have to write with the absolute bare minimum of backing or I get very distracted. "The more technology I have the harder it is to write a song."

smile

Anyway, I really liked this.

Good to see you back!

I saw the comment about the highwaymen. Yep... You have a Johnny Cash quality to your voice. Listening to it, I could see the man in black in the spotlight.

Sound quality is good. My only suggestion is to lower the vocal track a few dB but not by much.

Hi Vic ...

Always nice to see a new one from you. And yes, you have somewhat of a Johnny Cash voice ... not quite as raspy as his, but the similarity is there. Nice lyric and sung very nicely. I enjoyed this a lot!

Take care ...

Vic,
Beauty. Nice ballad. Unexpected instrumentals and stops work very well. Solid lyrics A+ performance.
Drum hats are a bit esssy to my ears, but that might be my headphones. Thank you for sharing.

I really like the way this builds slowly, and then kicks in strong at the chorus.

Good write. It may have taken a long time to get there, but the results are what matters!

I enjoyed the listen. smile

Good song, loved the world weary vocal and the arrangement.

Excellent.

Thank you David.
It works similar for me. Sometimes I think I have it done and embellish the hell out of it.
Then pare it all down to the bones.

Thanks for the encouraging comment Guitarhacker.
Thanks too for the nudge about the vocal volume. I have now taken it down a notch and a half.

Vic,

Like this one—a really strong write, and your vocal shines on this—sits perfectly in the mix. Like that clapping in the chorus—really works well. Nice mix on this overall. Excellent!

Hope all is well with you,

Nice arrangement that supports the vocal, melody & narrative...nothing superfluous.
there's a little sense of Rod McKuen about it.

Thanks David.
I do try to get some sort of build up.

As TM eloquently stated:
"There was a sense of strength in the recounting of loss. "

Great write, nice emotive vocal and the cello is standout.

Well done Vic.

Cool song!! Very cool build, with early sparse music and story telling, building to a traditional chorus....very well done!! Always like your vocal delivery and the band give just the right amount of support for it!! NIIIICE!! Merry Xmas!! Take care. Greg

Nice folk sound. I like the build in the chorus.

Good lyrics. Vocal performance fits will the lyrics.
