Mixed Signals on Soundcloud
Mixed Signals on YouTube

You know how you start writing a song by strumming some chords until a melody sneaks in, which is soon populated by words? “Something in your whisper” came through and I liked it. But what to add to it? Just keep talking about those things in her whisper, or not? Then the end of the first line came, so the question was answered.

I added bass and vocals, and Dave Bell of Blue Attitude added his exceptional guitar work for the perfect fills and solo.

Mixed Signals

Something in your whisper feels so different than other things you say.
When you raise the volume I can't hear you anyway.
No, there's gotta be a merger, somewhere in between
where the truth in what you're saying is what you really mean.

CH: Mixed signals --that's what you're sending out to me.
Mixed signals --how perplexing/confusing they/that can be.

When you say things softly, it brings me closer to hear it all once more.
You stir some kind of feelings I have never had before.
Then you come right back and say things that I don't want true
I'm receiving your mixed signals, so what am I to do. CH SOLO

END REF: Your mixed signals are driving me crazy.
Your mixed signals are driving me crazy.
I'm receiving your mixed signals, so what am I to do?

Comments for and against are welcomed.

Hi Marty and Dave
Very good song
Vocals fit great
Guitar is excellent
At about 3:04 I would have changed the drums
to increase the song.
But all in all a cool song
Good work Marty
Many greetings
Andi ;-)

Hi Marty ...

You never disappoint, my friend. A great song and so well delivered. Super lyric and a terrific vocal. Ans did Dave turn up the "sweet control" on his guitar, or what??!! Such a fabulous sound.

The video works perfectly for the message in the lyric. This is the whole package in full dress - wonderful!

Good stuff Marty. Lyrics came out well, though a little difficult to hear at times. Some good guitar throughout and good overall sound and feeling.

Marty,

Loved it!

A good write. A strong vocal!

Your Bass sounds great (of course).

Dave does some of his best session-guitarist work ever - beautifully supportive, cool licks. And a beautiful solo.

Excellent mix.

Catchy. One of your best.

Loved it! (bookended)

Marty, I'm jealous I didn't think of this hook first! Great take and production. Well structured as well.

Wow guys, what a power sound!

Very good vocals and backing vocals. The arrangement really "floats" (love that organ).

Dave... what can I say. Could this solo possibly be any better?
No, it's just perfect!

Very cool intro. Another super vocal and lyric Marty. The B3 was very cool. Loved how Dave danced around the vocal with some very tasteful licks. Excellent guitar solo. Well done..

Hi Marty,

Well I can tell you, no mixed signals from me (this time). It's a very good song you made, with a strong harmony towards the end and a fabulous solo from Dave. The lyrics are very nice and you sing it with all your heart. Who can compete with that?
These mixed signals clearly didn't confuse you!

Those are some powerfully good vocals, Marty, to go along with your always great bass, BiaB tracks and Dave’s smoky guitar goodness.

You certainly came up with a good lyric and melody in a hurry.
What’s your secret, please? smile

Really well done and the vid emphasizes the "difference" indeed.

Very good quality work. Nice vox and harmony. Guitars are smooth.

What's not to like?

Hi, Marty.

My first thought was "That's can't be a Band in a Box lead guitar!"[/i]. David did a great job on this.

Love the vocals, and the backing is perfect. Sounds awesome through my speakers.

Marty - this song, amongst other things, demonstrates how adding more "human" elements bring the BIAB stuff lo life.
Terrific vocal, terrific narrative.
Bass is DEEEEEP and grooves.
Dave's playing - yes, a lead player who is there to hear and respond to the song make a lot of difference.
Solid mix and not nits at all.
The lyric does point out a significant difference between Murcan & Strine: your say different than & we say different to, (a short cutting of "when compared to").
Excellent.

Clever lyrics, clever write. Great use of the guitar and the organ fills which slot in really nicely.

Great job.

Oh, you're so right, Andi. Going into that ending should have been more dramatic and dynamic.

Thanks, Brad. It's probably my old-man mouth that causes that. On the other hand, for many Rock 'n' Roll songs it's hard to figure the words, like "In a garden of Eden." hehe

Thanks, Floyd. BiaB is great, but when Dave adds his magic it finally becomes a song. It took me a few to understand "(bookended)." You're a clever dude, brother.

Thanks, Dewey. No need for jealousy, man. It's not "What [You] Need." <--a song of yours I love.

Rob

Thanks for all that, Rob. Right? Dave. What can we say? He most definitley could have made a great career as a session player because he can play pretty much any style with feeling.

Thanks, Scott. Dave really makes the song. He came in with just the right sound and feel. Yes, him and the B3 are so much fun to mix

One of your very best! Love it, and congratulations to Dave, too, for some superb guitar playing. Love the dark, lush minor key, and the lyrics ... it's hard (for me, at least) to pinpoint what the "secret sauce" is that makes this song so good, but it really is excellent. Well done, both!!!

Thanks, J&B. Hmmm nobody ever asked me the secret before, so I figured I didn't have one. So I'll pretend like I do and spill the beans right here. To get the most out of creativity, just stay out of the way and believe. Of course it doesn't hurt to get more inspiration from folks like you on this forum.

Great performance Marty. Your vocal is so assured - love the harmonies too.
Add in a very catchy hook and Dave Bell on guitar and you've got a winner.
Cheers,
Mike

Thanks, David. My thought: that SHOULD be a BiaB lead guitar.

Thanks, Ray. Your knowledge of various things always astounds me, man. I had to look up "Murcan & Strine", and guess what. Your comment here was 2nd on the list of answers. Dude, even Google knows the best sources for knowledge. You're absolutely right about bringing in the human element to make the song more alive.

Thanks, AT! Yeah, I really like how so often the Biab players seem to know when to bring it out. That makes it so easy to mix.

Thank you, James. It's the chemistry in loving what you do and doing it with someone who loves doing it as much. I can tell you love what you're doing too.

Thanks, Mike. Fortunately the harmony was in range, and more gratefully Dave Bell turned the song into something pleasing.

Great blues song. Dave's guitar, your bassline and the organ work really well together. The chording has nice minor feel painting the perplexity of the mixed signals.

The doubled vocals with increasing emotion at the end work really well.

Marty,

I would say this "fell" together quite nicely! It's kind of got a "Black Majic Woman" feel to it! I guess you can thank Dave's super guitar work for that assessment! Your vocals are so good here (harmony also)! I catch myself taking your excellent bass playing for granted sometimes forgetting it's you playing those parts because they are so solid every time! Great work!

Thanks, Torrey
