Here's one for Dad in honor of Fathers Day this weekend.

Walk Your Own Road

I remember way back when, back when I was just a kid,
me and some of my friends getting caught doing things we shouldn’t have been.
And when the police took me home, there was daddy with his bathrobe on.
He taught a lesson that I didn’t forget when he looked at me and said,

You’ve got to walk your own road. Stand straight and tall.
Carry your own load because after all,
when everything’s been said and done, you’re going to be the one
to reap exactly what you sowed. Son, walk your own road.

Now Daddy was a hero to me, and he was everything that I wanted to be,
so it left a painful memory when he went away.
But his words are with me still, and I know they always will be.
I’ve always done the best I can. And now, I’ve become my own man.

Cause I walk my own road. Stand straight and tall.
I carry my own load because after all,
When everything’s been said and done, I’m going to be the one
to reap exactly what I sow. So, I walk my own road.

Now late at night when it’s time for bed and we say our prayers,
I tell my children what my daddy said because after all these years.

I still think about him and the words he said back then.
I wonder what he’d think of me and the man I turned out to be.
But, I guess it’s all right now. ‘Cause in my heart I know somehow
that the streets are paved with gold where Daddy’s walking his own road.

You’ve got to walk your own road. Stand straight and tall.
Carry your own load because after all,
when everything’s been said and done, you’re going to be the one
to reap exactly what you sow. So, walk your own road.
Remember son, to walk your own road.

Everything here is Biab except the vocals. The band is:

DRUMS: Brian Fullen, =FPKE120.STY
BASS: Dow Tomlin, =FPKE120.STY
RHYTHM GUITAR: Jason Roller, =FPKE120.STY
FINGER PICKING GUITAR Jason Roller, =FPKE120.STY

Please let me know how it can be improved,

Brad

A song for all fathers indeed.
Great lyrics.
It is about my dad too, who wasn't my biological father.
But I couldn't have had a better dad.
Nice tribute.

What a beautiful song, Brad, and it really can't be improved. You chose the perfect band and gave them a good, clean mix, then added your vocal with some extraordinary lyrics. Inspired and inspirational. You dad is a beautiful man and you are beautiful evidence. Happy Father's Day. I shared this song with my siblings.

Brad,

You've come a long way in a short amount of time (in your BIAB usage).
Nicely done.

A really good write.
Nice vocal.
Good mix.

Here's a production suggestion (take it or leave it)...
Instead of using only the stick in your drums track,
change to the snare in your 2nd Chorus. Let it run through the Bridge.
The drum drop on Verse 3 is nice. I'd only do that for the first 2 lines.
Bring the stick back for lines 3 and 4
Then back to the snare for the last Chorus and out...

A really nice "Dad Song".

Brad,

You consistently deliver some really compelling lyrics, and this one is no exception. A sweet message song and a nice tribute to all the Dad’s who helped us walk that road the right way. Nicely put together and arranged. Very nice job on this!

Stay well!

Now that's a nice Country Song. I can kinda hear a little Rodney Adkins in your voice, and a very touching story, which is what songwriting is supposed to be, telling a story. Well Done!!

Thanks for taking the time to give it a listen and for the comments everyone. I wanted to go with a solid country sound because they don't get much more solid country than my dad. I sent it to him on Father's Day and he liked it. As for being beautiful Marty, it just proves you've never met either of us in person. I think my dad and I were both born ugly and then spent the rest of our lives perfecting the process! Again Floyd, thanks for the technical advice. Honestly, it sounds as that goes a bit further than my ability level will take me, but it gives me something to shoot for and try to learn. Hope all you dads had a good day,

Brad

Very cool lyric Brad. Super tribute to your dad. I too got chauffeured home by the local police dept and had to do the long walk to my room past my mom and dad. There was more silence and serious looks though. Excellent vocal and backtrack was perfect for the song Brad. Well done

Your heartfelt vocal and an excellent country band deliver this fine tribute for Father’s Day.

I think a lot of us got similar advice from our parents about standing straight and tall and also reaping what we sow. Good advice for any age!

Happy belated Father’s Day!

I read the lyrics before listening. Good work. The lyrics stand on their own without the music. The music style is the right fit for the words.

That's a really pretty country song Brad. I especially liked the way you weaved the story in your lyrics.

My daddy died of TB when I was ten. I used to sing that song Don't They Know It's The End Of The World when I was by myself. smile

I enjoyed your song very much.
