BREAKING CHAINS

I haven't had time to hardly be involved around here much these days (I've been out of the country for a bit, but now I'm back in the states) but still want to contribute something occasionally! It's much different than my usual fare. The title is borrowed from an earlier offering I put up a couple of years ago and the music/melody is from an even later offering. This is a co-write once again with Ron Helm. It's what I would class as mountain folk as attested to by some of the realtracks used! The band carried almost all the load on this one and I'm not complaining! I will be trying to catch up and comment on what everyone else is posting over the next few days! Thanks to all of you who give it a moment to listen! I appreciate it! T

Born to fail you've always heard it
And you heard them say you were no good
You wished someday they'd see how you really felt
Somehow you knew they never would
Oh, the things in life that lead to ruin
That keep you buried in your past
How it takes your peace of mind and never lets you find
A love that will forever last
Ooh you need something to hold onto
Ooh take a look it's right in front of you

There's someone who can feel your heartache
And He'll take away your pain
He's the one you know who'll never leave you
Don't you know He's breaking chains

It's time to face a new day dawning
And turn your eyes toward the Son
Forget where you have been, it's time to live again
Through Him your battle has been won
Ooh there's a promise you can hold onto
Ooh given by the one who'll stand by you

Tell Him, Lord come and take my burden
I know your love is never gonna change
And that you're here to heal the broken hearted
Before I was born you knew my name
You're the one who knows my heartache
You're the one who feels my pain
You're the one I know who'll never leave me
You're the one who's breaking chains

Why do you spend your time contemplating
The perpetual state you're in
Why don't you turn around, it's time to lay it down
You know it's not the way to live
Ooh there's a gift that He has given you
Ooh Oh the time has come for your breakthrough

Say, Lord help me with my burden
I know your love is never gonna change
And that you're here to heal the broken hearted
Before I was born you knew my name
You're the one who knows my heartache
You're the one who feels my pain
You're the one I know who'll never leave me
You're the one who's breaking chains

Torrey,

This is so good! It's you, but "unplugged" and it sounds tremendous!

I absolutely love this one... Will be going back for many more listens.

Great job Torrey, I agree with Bob's assessment. Great production and write. Loved the way you built the song from the ground up and brought it back down slightly at the end. It really kept me waiting for whatever was coming next. Like this stuff a lot!

Torrey...this is a bit outside your box stylistically...but as Bob said when you 'unplug' you step into another lane that fits your voice so well...first off what a great songwriting team you and Ron are together...this is such an uplifting positive expression...I love the message but seriously you had me with the Oohs!...harmony, harmony, harmony! it's what successful living is all about and (IMHO) music too...love the way the song opens up instrumentally and vocally...a voice and an acoustic guitar is the perfect way to open a song IMO...but the right additions are the way to end a song perfectly and some harmony Ooh's (only wish you had thrown in an 'Aah' or two smile loved it! Interesting to hear you in a more acoustic setting, but the musical quality is still nonpareil. Some nice lyrical phrase turns. I almost thought you had written a secular song but then the lyrics found their familiar theme. Great work as always.

Torrey,

A very nice song!
It's amazing to hear such an acoustic sound from you.
It has a different taste than your usual tune, and I listened to it with great interest.
Your vocals are great as always.
Enjoyed my listen a lot.

Best regards.

I like the style and feel of the song, and the contrast between the unplugged opening and the fully produced part works very well.

Extra kudos for using your beautiful "ooh" harmonies in the right way without overdoing it.

Good song, Torrey. Chorus is memorable, and I particularly like the prechorus (the ooo lines). Vocal is full and rounded.

Hey Torrey,

Another uplifting spiritual classic!

You sure are on a roll this year man!

Hi, Torrey and Ron. What a terrific collab. Really cool how this good song keeps getting better as it grows. As it develops, the mix develops, and at each turn I find something else in there that adds so much to the song. The melody moves quite fluidly and it's very catchy. There are no loose ends; every piece points toward perfection. Really well done.

Great vocals. Really like how it builds, and the ending is very nice too. Good one!

Thanks Dan! The harmony work on this one was a real challenge! This type of song requires the harmonies to be as good as possible because they are more noticeable and vital to the overall sound of the song! They certainly could have been done better by others, but I gave it my best! T

Torrey & Ron,

A nice write.
Good arrangement. Good build.
Cool selection or RTs - several that I do not recall being used (in the Showcase) before.
Good vocals. Well mixed.

My third attempt at commenting - seems something gets in the way these days.
Torrey,
your voice sits well in the less electric setting...nice band choices. That acoustic guitar is the perfect percussion instrument for the song.
No one ooohs like you plus the TB cadence & cascade is a clear stamp of quality.

Hi Torrey ...

A new side to your music! It suits you quite well. This style requires great vocals and man, you have the chops for it!

There are two things I like, in particular, about songs: 1. Layering builds 2. Key modulations.

You are one of the most talented creators on this forum ... and many other places, I would guess. If I had ghalf your talent, I'd have twice as much as almost everyone else.

Take care ...

We agree with Bob - “Torrey Unplugged” and it sounds great.

We love the vocal harmonies and love the build too.

We played in bluegrass bands for years and called that harmony blend "car horn tight" and, yes, for this song you nailed it. Lotta folks don't get the difference between this and BGV's. Well done.

It has a sort of an acoustic Traveling Wilburys feel to it, which is very good.
Excellent mix.

Another winner from you and Ron!

Surely different band than usually, but a good pop song can wear many clothes without losing its catchy melody and clearly expressed message. Really enjoyed the vocals, in this more acoustic approach your voice really shines. Talented work with the excellent sounding harmonies. The band is really warm and mellow. Reminds me of The Wallflowers.
