Clicked on your post, pghboemike, because I happened to be working on pentatonic scales this week, triggered by watching this video:

It discusses shifting scale to match the chord, that is,
when the chord changes from C to F, then shift the scale from realtive minor Amin Pentatonic to relative minor Dmin pentatonic. Over Gmajor comps, play Emin Pent.
I don't expect to be playing chops, but thought it would be good training .
My approach has been to learn the three scales (A-D-E) on one string at a time, starting with #1, the bass E string, and working my way down. Ever tried that?
