I usually use REALTRACKS but I have some 20 year old (!) bb file that I found and I kinda like the midi on it.

What midi synths do people use when loading BB files into external DAW (I use cakewalk) to get GM sounds that sound good from BB files. I know there are a zillion but I want to do some quick conversions of these files

You have Cakewalk so you also have TTS-1. That is a very good GM softsynth so that is what I would use.
