I'm trying to add an audio track of a vocal to an existing BIAB created backing track in RealBand.

What would be the best way to align the timing of the tracks, please?

Thank you.

Hey Frank,

When I'm recording, I always make sure to include a count in, as this really helps aligning tracks later. If I line up the beats of the count in and everything else is at the same tempo, it all just falls into place.

If there's no count-in, but everything is still at the same tempo, I would look for a unique moment in the track, perhaps one with a clear spike in the audio waveform, some silence on either side, or a unique sound that only happens once. It has to be a moment that is clearly defined in both the vocal and backing track. Then once that moment is perfectly lined up everything else will be too as long as they're the same tempo.

Was the vocal recorded while singing along with the BiaB song? (!important)

For my workflow (assuming the tracks are the same tempo) I would import the audio track into RB on a blank track and see where it ends up.
After doing so, maybe Save As and save it with a different name (so you always have the original).
Then I would open the Audio Edit window (the waveform icon) with the desired vocal track being the selected track.

Using the 2 sets of +/- keys in this window (one for height and one for width), zoom in as much as needed to align the vocal peak to a bar line.

Hold CTRL and tap the A key (CTRL+A) to select the whole track.
Then again hold the CTRL key down and use the mouse to 'grab' the waveform (click and hold left mouse button) and then drag the waveform to line up with the bars. Let go of left button when aligned.

Go back and listen.
Adjust as needed.

If it still fades in/out of sync, things get more complicated .. but still possible.

i use a uphoria usb interface with mic and midi inputs. using the asio driver you can hear the backing through headphones and as there's no latency you can record the vocal automatically in sync with the backing track as you hear it.

i'm assuming you want to record a new vocal track over the exisitnig BIAB backing and that you have a usb interface as i'm sure they all work the same way.

an audio interface is virtually essential if you are doing a lot of recording and theya re not prohibitively expensive.

Thanks everyone for their input. I'm trying to create some music for our church from home. The vocal was sent to me as an MP3 from one of our vocalist who used my backing track as a guide when she recorded it. I'm now trying to integrate it along with the original backing track into a decent recording in RealBand.

I was able to sync it up pretty closely using cut and paste.

I now have new problem. When I try to input any audio material into RealBand I get no sound and the message:

"Input and output devices in Windows are set to different sample rates. Input will be disabled."

This just started to happen?

Thanks again.

The message explains it.
Match your Windows sound settings to the ones for RB.

The message also makes me think you may have changed your audio device in Windows or RB. Did you by chance remove the Focusrite?
Or maybe Windows is looking to the built in card and RB is looking to Focusrite?
Something isn't matching in your audio input chain.

Looking a little closer at your image; under the Name of each audio track it now says the output is the Realtek Hi Def output ..
So you need to either match RB to that or go back into windows and make that match RB.
