It seems, from the David Gould notes to the Django recording, that Django himself was very aware of 'nuances' and a bit of a perfectionist. What a great, great man of jazz!

I remember back in the 1950's Diz Disley trying so hard to get Django's sound right. I cannot find a YouTube of Diz playing Nuages but I did find this one of a beaming Stephane Grappelli (in Australia!) so obviously enjoying playing with him:
