I'm running BIAB 2018 on a Windows 10 machine. Up until recently, I was able to audition RealTracks in the StylePicker. Now I get an error stating that Windows Media Player can't play the underlying .wma files.

I tried shutting down BIAB and playing the files directly from the "\RealTracks\Data\Style Demos Audio" folder. The built-in Windows 10 Groove Music app plays the .wma files just fine. When playing them with Windows Media Player I get a message stating:

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

This was working up until at least a month ago. I can't think of anything I would have installed or any settings changes that I made that would have affected Windows Media Player (outside of normal Microsoft updates).

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Hi Brydo,

I'm not sure what would cause this problem, but installing the Media Feature Pack might take care of it. It reinstalls Media Player, and can be run even if Media Player's already installed.

Thanks, and good luck!

Windows 10 just released a spring creator's update that's been installing for the last week or so now on user's machines. Maybe that update impacted something.
I've seen comments on several forums that the Windows 10 Spring 2018 update disables ASIO driver audio in settings so people are having trouble hearing or recording various audio interface inputs. The fix, so far, has been to roll back the update.

I understand the issue I've read about is not the issue described. The anecdotal reports do suggest though that audio is affected by the update.

Strange that a Microsoft app will not run a Microsoft specific file suffix.
Hey Jim, that's right. My Dell received some kind of Waves Audio Mixer after the update. Never had it or wanted it. Wiped it out.
Good to know Kent. However, when I look at this it says: "The Media Feature Pack for N and KN versions of Windows 10 ". What are the N and KN versions of Win 10 this is referring to?

Sorry, just found the answer. The N and KN versions are versions for Europe and Korea. See this link for info: http://www.itprotoday.com/windows-10/what-are-windows-10-n-and-kn-editions

Thanks

Jeff
The update installed the Twitter app on my computer, I deleted it immediately.

It also wanted to play mp3 file on that Groove Music thing, so I right clicked the mp3, opened with other program, chose Media Player and checked the always open box.

I have a love/hate affair with computers in general.

Hi Jeff,

It's funny, I hadn't even realized they were Korean or European editions, I just knew that they don't include the Media Player components. Even if you don't have one of those editions, this installer still allows you to reinstall those components to fix certain issues. It's come in handy a few times.

Cheers

Hi Brydo,

I have exactly the same problem but I can't play the wma-files on Groove or Media player and BIAB 2020 doesn't open the loops. Did you find solution and if you did, could you please inform me also. I have BIAB installed on two computers, the one which uses WAS works but the other using Asio (for Cakewalk) does not.

Best Regards

Spede,

1) Find a file
2) Right click to open a sub menu
3) Select "Properties" to open another sub menu
4) Select the "General" tab
5) At "Opens With" press the "Change" button
6) Select the program (App in Windows 10 lingo)you want to use to open the file or
6a) Scroll down to the bottom to select "More Apps"
7) Select the program you want to use to open the file
8) Select "Apply"
Thank you very much Jim, I will try that.

Hi again Jim,

I tried that but no go, BIAB wants to open the files in Windows Media Player, it wasn't default and I changed that but no success. I also restarted the computer after the change. The default player on the other computer is Groove and it works there but not on the other computer. Maybe it has something to do with ASIO (doesn't open files)/WAS (opens files).

Hi,

I finally managed to resolve the problem. I had ASIO in use because WAS didn't work and with ASIO BIAB didn't open loops. I tried everything and when I changed the settings to 32-bit, 44,1 kHz I got WAS working and now it opens the loops. My interface is M-audio 192/14. If somebody happens to have the same problem, one can try this.
