But I have another question. Can a newer monitor just die? It's an ASUS, and wasn't cheap or refurbished. I tried another power cord, but nothing. It should still power up just with the power supplied, right? Does it also need input from the computer?
Yes, the monitor should show power with just the power cord. (they typically have an "on light" of some kind)
It is not unusual for monitors to quit working (go bad).
I have a bad monitor (from my father-in-law's computer) sitting in the garage at the moment.
Had a spare sitting around that I gave him.

One of my neighbors had one go bad recently, too (came and asked me to check it)
Ask someone to borrow one just to check (a quick check).
You might be able to find a used one on craigslist for cheap (look in the "free" section, too)
