How far off the tempo suggested for a style is advisable to deviate?

Depends on what makes up your audio. You'll normally see straight MIDI styles have a wide tempo range because the audio is rendered when needed. RealStyles have a narrow tempo range because they use RealTracks which are audio tracks. Busier audio can not stretch or shrink as much as simple audio. Some people say they can tell if ANY time or pitch shifting is performed on audio. Generally once you hear artifacts, you need to adjust. Typical is +10% or -15%.

Thanks Jim. What are artifacts?

I'm looking for a style for Scarborough Fair. I want the tempo to be about 80 or 85. It is 3/4 time. A large majority of 3/4 time RealStyles are swing and don't seem appropriate at all. I have the UltraPack and "Xtra Styles PAK 4: Folk & Beyond 1".

I guess I'll go with Bouzouki Slow Waltz. But it doesn't sound right at 85. Maybe 95.

Audio artifacts are some form of noticeable distortion of the sound quality, in this case usually because of stretching or changing too far from the original recorded tempo.

Hey Lesley,

There are actually recommended tempo ranges for each Style and RT in their respective picker dialogues (see screenshots).

You do not have to stick to the waltz/swing styles.

Experiment with using regular 4/4 styles with a 3/4 time signature.
Sometimes it works, sometimes not so much.

MIDI should be fine, sound quality wise, at any tempo.

RealTracks have their recommended tempo ranges, but then there are options for halftime or double time when choosing them. Same for RealDrums. This gives you a tremendous potential tempo range overall.

Thanks for all these replies. Very helpful!

It may seem all wrong but also look at 12/8 sometimes you get a nice feel there.

On second thoughts I am wrong. However I found several 3/4 ev 8 waltzes that seemed a fine fit albeit slow at 85bpm.
